Extra Info:

I am offering my Sony SS-G5 'speakers for FREE!

These are a bit of a sleeper in my opinion; they generally go cheaply, but they they have a lot of audiophile credentials. 12" Carbocon AlNiCo cast frame woofers, large dome midrange, diffracted front baffle, heavily built enclosures, etc etc.

I was going to spend a bit of time to get these up to scratch, but I'm having a purge and big and bulky are first to go. The cabinets are a little cosmetically challenged and could probably do with a sand and re-varnish. Both tweeters are blown; I don't think they were anything special anyway and a Peerless/Vifa swap would probably be an upgrade. Both mids had been pushed in but they are now O.K. and function well. One of the midrange L-pads (level adjusters) should be replaced; I think the wiper is damaged though it still allows sound. Both dustcaps on the woofer have been poked in; not an issue for one woofer, but the other has an annoying buzz on replay. I don't think is poled or voice coil, as there are no rattles or rubbing when pushed by hand.

So, replace an L-pad, two tweeters and address the buzzing woofer, and you will have a nice pair of speakers for peanuts. Or, rat them for parts....

I am not interested in packing or shipping these, so they are pickup only. Inspection/testing is welcome by mutual arrangement. Pickup is from 2229 Lilli Pilli in Sydney's south (not the Bateman's Bay Lilli Pilli!).

Apparently the best replacement tweeters for the old Sony G5/G7's are metal dome SEAS models. I'm told they match pretty well sonically and they have the same screw spacing, so they should just screw right in. For example:

SEAS K30D (H588) (older model from the 90's)

SEAS 25TAC/D (H535) (discontinued model)

SEAS 27TBC/G (H1147) (current model)

Or you can recoil the originals, that would be best.

Hope someone picks them up and restores them, they're nice.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for that information! I also hope that someone takes them up....I'd hate to put 'em out on the cleanup. I have owned G7s previously and found them worthy 'speakers and easy to live with.

Phil

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update; I have a council cleanup next weekend (22/23 Sep), and these will be going out there if no-one picks these up before then....don't make me do it!

Another alternative for these would be to convert them to subwoofer enclosures; they are heavy and strongly constructed.

Phil

Hi Daryl,

Nice! I had a pair off beautiful Japanese market SS-G7a's and sold them around 2006. They were the reason I snapped up these G5s on ebay a few years ago, but I haven't progressed with them in all this time. They are a bit of a step-down from G7s, but still a worthy project!

Regards,

Phil

Hi Phil,

If only these were in Adelaide. I'd pick them up as a partner for my G7a's.

Hi Phil,

I've just been made aware of your post and, though it is now quite old, am told that you still have the Sonys. I too have a pair of SS-G5s but they have one midrange and one tweeter blown so I could use one of the midrange units from your pair (pity that both your tweeters are stuffed too) but I don't really need the rest and don't really want to travel all the way up to Sydney and back from where we are near Yass if I can avoid it. I'm wondering, therefore, if you would be willing to pull the better of the midranges out of your pair of SS-G5s and post it to me. Obviously I'd pay for the postage, and even add a little for your trouble in pulling the mid out and sending it to me.

Cheers,

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

When I offered these up, I thought it'd be a nice little project for an enthusiast or for parts, and it cleared out a pair of big boxes that I was no longer going to refurbish. By offering local pickup, it was hassle free for me also.

The problem with parting them out, packing the parts, and posting them off is that it becomes a hassle for me, plus I'm left with two ugly boxes that are even less use than they were before. If I could be bothered going down that path, I could put 'em up on ebay and at least make some coin.

You're probably frustrated with me for having something that you can use but not making the effort of posting them, however it's my perogative as a seller (not even that, a give-away-er) to stipulate no shipping.

Have you tried eBay Germany? Last time I looked, which was admittedly years ago, they seem to have a good stock of nice vintage Sony equipment and parts.

So no offence, but sorry..........

That's quite some time ago now!

The worst thing is that 18 months later, they're still sitting in my living area, and I've since bought even more 'speakers! I have been moving things on, though still nowhere near enough.

I may as well shut this thread down as 'No Longer Available'. I have a pair of 'ATC' dome tweeters to pop in these, so I guess I'll make a project of them myself!

Good luck with your search Dennis,

Phil
