Bus_Boy Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Wanting to get further into the HT side of things i'm starting to look into "lcr" speakers. At the same time however i'm trying to go about it as more of a tweak, rather than a complete speaker revamp. Currently i have an usher s525 centre, and s520 for L/R and surround. I haven't finalised placement yet on the rears, or any further surrounds as i intend on doing as much testing and listening as possible. What i'm wondering is if the s525 designed to be used as a centre, can also be used horizontally for the left and right front channels? It makes a great centre channel considering it's price, but at the same time the s520's are equally good on their own. I can't pick any tonal in balance between the L/R and centre, as they do share the same drivers, though not the same amount or cabinet dimensions, but then again i have not heard a setup before where all front stage speakers were identical, so their could be some gains to be made. If i went ahead and purchased 2 extra s525's, i would most likely move the existing s520's to fill an additional 2 surround channels. For anyone unfamiliar with the 525, here is a link -http://www.usheraudiousa.com/products/loudspeakers/usher-series/s-525-center-channel As you can see the baffle is angled, which is handy as my centre location is a little lower than ideal, and saves me having to stuff around and try and tilt the enclosure. Another benefit i can see for the angled baffle would mean i could probably get away with having the front 3 speakers all at the same height, currently the L/R sit a bit higher to be as close as possible to ear level. What do you think would the usher centre speaker make an good candidate for a reasonably priced "lcr" setup, or are centre channel speakers designed only for a particular purpose ? Without knowing the specific details behind the Usher S525 design, it's effectively a MTM/D'Apollito design if you were to stand the speakers vertically. I'm not quite sure how they'd perform as front right and left speakers if sitting horizontally - I get the feeling that they wouldn't image as well on the horizontal plane compared to speakers which have the drivers vertically aligned. Happy to be corrected by those in the know though!
Bus_Boy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Go the dedicated center not sure what you mean? i have the dedicated centre now, i was wondering about using the same centre for the left and right, but i've been reading that MTM placed horizontally is bad, and that even for the centre channel a vertical arrangement is better. Unfortunately i can't have a vertical centre as i don't have the space
Bus_Boy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 I've emailed usher twice in the past and they didn't reply...
Jventer Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I had Krix Acoustics and the matching centre speaker was an Acoustic - horizontal with a different name, but then all the boxes, speakers ports etc were the same. I checked out the website and the speakers look different. I see no reason why you can use a centre speaker for left or right, but I think the sound may not be that good. Why not try it and if it does not work you can use the centre speakers as rears? or sell them. Sorry that I cant be of more help.
