SansuiGuy Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Hi, I've moved house recently, so thought it would be a good opportunity to show some of my HiFi in my new Audio room setup, which is primarily Vintage components namely Sansui & Pioneer. I mainly collect 1970's gear, with a few pieces from the early 80's with the exception of the CD players. Speakers are from JBL, AR, Infinity, Pioneer & Bose. Hope you vintage fans out there like my setup! 8 1
pete_mac Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 As always... droooool! Lovely, lovely gear. A pair of BA5000's is just plain nuts! Love the black Sansui turntables. Which model is your Technics turntable? I have a similar-looking, near mint SL1600 in the garage awaiting a new tonearm rest.
danter Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Is that Pioneer Spec gear at the bottom of the silver rack? Very impressive collection. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Guest Muon Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I can imagine that the pics have little impact compared to seeing this lot in the flesh
Dr Good Vibe Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Wow simply great a museum in it's own right, how much of the gear do you turn on ? Like the tall timber racks made buy how ?
Dr Good Vibe Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Can you tell us a bit of history on how it all came together.
uHenry Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Wow simply great a museum in it's own right, how much of the gear do you turn on ? Like the tall timber racks made buy how ? +1, what a field of dreams. Can you tell us a bit of history on how it all came together. Yes please! Tell us more
Ahh- Schnoo Schnoo Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Wow Wow Wow Can't say more ATM, still drooling........... Thank you for sharing Edited September 2, 2012 by Ahh- Schnoo Schnoo
Saxon Hall Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Is it more a museum type collection or a working collection? Whatever option it is, it's great in the photos but in the flesh would be mind blowing!
cableconnoisseur Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Nice............there are several components in your collection that I recall lusting over in the '80's. Thanks for the memories.............

The turntable is a Technics SL-1300, which is like a full auto 1200 in many ways. I really enjoy the build quality of these old technics and they sound great, for the buck
SansuiGuy Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Is that Pioneer Spec gear at the bottom of the silver rack? Very impressive collection. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2 Hi Danter, sure is Pioneer Spec 2 amp, Spec 1 preamp at the bottom. There's a couple of CTF-1250 cassettes amongst the rest and a RT-909 R2R at the top. Speakers are HPM-1500's. I love the contrast of the Pioneer silver over the Sansui black
SansuiGuy Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 I can imagine that the pics have little impact compared to seeing this lot in the flesh Sounds pretty good in the flesh, yes, anyone who lives locally (Melbourne metro area) is welcome to come out some time and have a listen, if,I can find some time.
SansuiGuy Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Wow simply great a museum in it's own right, how much of the gear do you turn on ? Like the tall timber racks made buy how ? Hi Dr Good Vibe, I use most of it, in fact I like to run power through it all at some stage or the other. When I'm sitting quietly I normally listen to the G-8000 Sansui although this receiver is no slouch by any means. The Pioneer and Sansui systems I fire up at last one day a week, mainly on weekends, even be it for a short time. Although the Sansui setup is seriously ear destroying, believe it or not, I don't play it that loud these days, but rather prefer to listen how well the BA-5k's bring the best out of speakers. They are truly wonderful Amps. I have listened to quite a few various big Mac amps and although im a fan, IMO these big Sansui's just plain sound better, without any form of harshness. This is their greatest attribute I believe.
handy steel Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 What a stunning collection SansuiGuy, you must be one very happy man.
Upfront Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hi Danter, sure is Pioneer Spec 2 amp, Spec 1 preamp at the bottom. I love the contrast of the Pioneer silver over the Sansui black I have that same pioneer Set up. Very nice mate. Can't be too many here in oz. Very very nice mate
SansuiGuy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 I have that same pioneer Set up. Very nice mate. Can't be too many here in oz. Very very nice mate Yeah, Spec series amps are rare indeed in Oz. The Spec 4's come up every few years if your lucky, but I can't remember the last time I saw a Spec 2 on eBay. There was one in NZ a while back on Trade Me, not sure if it sold though.
LogicprObe Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 You sir..........are a lunatic. (I mean that in the nicest possible way.....) i wouldn't be making a habit of moving too often!
SansuiGuy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Can you tell us a bit of history on how it all came together. Hi Dr Good Vibe, glad you like my collection. It's taken me years to get it to this stage, most of it has come from all over the world at great expense i hate to say. Yikes!! Many years ago, I was looking at buying a high end audio system, and what I auditioned just didn't do it for me. Not only from the sound point of view, but the look and build quality. I always liked the 70's japanese stuff so I purchased vintage gear instead as IMO it looks, sounds better and appreciates unlike the modern empty box stuff. Anyway, The JBL 220's from Las Vegas, the 150A's from N.Z, the AR TSW 910's from Sydney, the SR-929 from N.Z, the Spec gear and the SR-838 from the U.S and one of the CA-3000's from Canada just for starters. The list goes on and on over the globe. Very little has come from Oz, but heres the real surprise, the BA-5k's, one of the CA-3000's and the SC-5110 all came from the same Sansui collector in Oz. It was a deceased estate, they were purchased new by the original owner. I have their boxes too they are serial numbered one number apart, so these amps literally came down the production line together. I'm fairly lucky I know cause they are super rare in Oz and hugely expensive to import cause they weigh over 50kgs each and highly sought OS. Ive often been asked if i would part with them and my reply is, if I decided too, I would only sell them as a lot, as that's the way they have always been. Besides, 2 x BA-5k's sound better than 1!! 2
skippy124 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 2 x BA-5k's sound better than 1!! Now ain't that the truth!!! Fantastic collection...... and it is great to see this sort of equipment in Oz, and being appreciated and well looked after as well. Cheers John

SansuiGuy Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 I was told that there was only 6 sets bought in during the 70s. That could be right. I personally haven't seen another. A good mate of mine purchased a Spec system in the early 80's including the optional rack. He couldn't purchase a Spec 2 so got a Spec 4 instead. He still has it to this day.
Vortexjah Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Can't believe I have only just viewed this thread. Wow! Wow! And Wow! That is a mighty collection, and the way your room is arranged looks stunning. I had to look twice at the first pic to make sure it had not been edited to be a mirror image. Very fine indeed! Many of great times to be had:)
