6 Moons Jplay Review

Recommended Posts

OK I gave it go, thanks for letting us know.

It sounded identical to Jriver MC to me.

I switched back and forth at least 10 times but there was nothing to be heard to my ears/system.

I used JRiver MC with it's volume control disabled.

Cheers.

Unfortunately a (somewhat typically) over enthusiastic 6Moons review that reads like an advertorial and mentions none of the significant problems of living with jplay.

It does sound wonderful, but I'm surprised by what the review leaves out. See here for some feedback from SNAers with a bit more perspective

I agree Al, it was the best for SQ (IMO) out of all of them when I tried it a while back, but it isn't all that user friendly in some situations/systems.

Edit: I tried the free version, at the time.

Oh! i found cPlay very close, and maybe equal, or just different.... again, at that time.

Not just 6moons. Go to the Jplay site and click reviews - there's half-a-dozen from reputable magazines/sites at least... Yep, like everything worthwhile in audio there are some 'teething' problems with Jplay... But once implemented it really is something to hear...

Yes - the sound is almost worth putting up with the frustration for. I've just had my second issue of iTunes becoming non-responsive under jplay and needing a cntr-alt-delete to reset it for the morning.

It's a testament to how good it sounds that I bother... but, as I've said before, if they can iron our the usability bugs I think they'll take the market by storm. Until they do that, it's unlikely to get mass market traction in my view.

It integrates well with JRiver, takes the usability quirks out of it.

Great way to compare sound quality between the two products as well, cause you can switch quite fast between them in JRiver.

Like I said before, when I did, I didn't hear one iota of difference.

The minimal GUI of JPlaymini has the best sound quality...I really wouldn't bother with the Itunes, JRiver or Foobar plugins...

I liken Jplay to good vinyl replay - it takes a little time to clean/dust off records; adjust tonearm, put a record on the platter etc.

But the end result is worth it.

Just wondering which settings you used for jplay? Try turning on throttle, hibernating in fullscale mode, and reducing buffer to 'directlink' or as low as it goes without pops and clicks.

Hopefully will yield an improvement...

Running jplay at work at the moment. The sound quality really is spectacular.

Alistair I recall you mentioning in a thread some time back that in your view computer weren't yet in the same league as the best CD transports... How far off do you think Jplay (on a well set up PC with a good usb transport) is?

Curious because I haven't had a quality CD transport in my system..

Very good question. I need to stream through jplay at home to be sure and will try and do that in the near future. You have me intrigued too!

Easiest would be my existing dedicated audio computer, which is the current generation Mac Mini server into a DCS world clock (which is my USB off ramp) into the Puccini. Comparison will be the Piccini spinner clocked to the same world clock.

Nah, I've uninstalled it now and can't be bothered with it. By all accounts I should of heard an improvement with the default installation if I was going to.

Hibernation worked out OK for Han Solo, but I don't think I'll be so lucky :)

Fair enough :)

...except I don't agree the default settings would yield much of an improvement ;)

I persevered despite not hearing much improvement with default setttings, and am now so impressed that I wouldn't consider returning to JRMC (so impressed I put up with all the bugs).

The directlink setting did more for SQ than the hibernate setting in my setup.

Yes I didn't think so and this is a big negative for me.

JRiver comes with a good as any ever coded, digital volume control.

Cheers.

Yes. And a much better UI. But SQ is significantly inferior to jplay in most applications. What we need is jplay SQ with jriver/itunes/etc UI. If jplay gets this right it'll kill the market. In fairness to jplay - 10 hours straight with no issues today... but it's a crap shoot.

does JPLAY come with any usable digital volume control, with and without hibernation mode activated?

Hi,

yes jPlay has a digital volume, although it can't be accessed during playback..

My understanding about the "Volume" in jPlay is that it's only meant to "set the loudness level" to best suit your DAC's 'padding'.. In actual fact, I'm sure early versions of jPlay never had this function??

Generally, you don't control the volume directly from the source anyhow, but rather further up the line, post DAC, in the "pre-amp" stage..
