I am after a black Technics turntable. This is my first turntable so I am only looking to spend around $100 or less. Something vintage would be perfect.

Welcome venerator

I don't think Technics made many vintage turntables in black. Their signature colour is "silver". The SL-BD20 is black, but it is also very pedestrian. While it offers better sound quality than a lot of the other plastic-fantastic of it's time, it still is very.....plastic. And it doesn't have an interchangeable headshell so you are stuck with the Technics cart/stylus that is hard-fitted to the arm. You're definitely limiting your upgrade options.

The only decent "black" technics I know is the SL-1210, but that's their TOTL and you're looking at a budget of over $700 for that, even 2nd hand.

Why does it HAVE to be black?

I have been noticing that finding something black is making things alot harder. The reason I want black is because I have set up a large section of my living room for music, and I think a black turntable would look alot better than anything else. Plus I already have a black Technics amp set up there. I was looking at getting a Technics SL-Q210 on Ebay as I heard it would be a good first turntable but I missed it.

If I had to I would probably go to another brand instead of going for a different colour.

Yep, I think "has to be black" and Technics is going to seriously limit your options.

I have a Technics SL-D2 (I think that is the model) or SL-B202 (maybe) in very good nick which you could have for $100 + postage to Qld.

I also have a Fully auto Toshiba SR-Q630 in VGC except the dustcover which has some deep scratches. It's black on top too! It's probably worth more than $100 but you can have for that + postage.

Respectfully disagree.

The SP 10 MKIII is Technics top table, followed by the SP-10MKII. SP10 MKII's turn up on ebay occasionally, though are often scratched and worn looking, though brilliant tables in their own right if properly plinthed. They go from around $600 up.

If you want a black one, you'll need to find someone to spray it for you.

My apologies soundfan. You are correct of course. The SP10 is the TOTL. I was thinking more in terms of tables that come "ready to play" out of the box, complete with tone-arm, for the average consumer. I've always considered a TT that comes just as a drive and needs to be paired with an individually chosen plinth and tone-arm as "not for the average punter".

Thanks for the correction.

Hey Prana69, no need to apologise. And you are right, the SL-1210 is an excellent table out of the box.
