venerator Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I missed out on the Technics SL-Q210 I was after in the last topic I made, so I thought I better just make a general topic and keep all my questions about different turntables in the one spot. I am looking to buy my first turntable just for occasional listening to records at home (I only own a few records at the moment). I want to spend under $100 for the turntables as it's my first setup and I don't want to get carried away before I even have a decent amount of records to listen to. I am pretty picky about how it will look (I definitely want something black) and am after something vintage just for the look and feel that comes with that. I am pretty keen on Technics as a brand as well. After just missing out on a few I was after, here is all I can currently find which I might be interested in: http://www.ebay.com/...#ht_1051wt_1163 There was going to be a list there but finding some black technics that can ship to Australia is proving annoyingly difficult. From what I can gather on google this is a decent turntable but the $100 is a bit steep for it? Any thoughts on this one would be well appreciated. If I don't end up buying it I will throw in any other options I come across in here because I don't really have much idea.
Krispy Audio Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Shipping on that one is $89.60! If $100 is your budget, you're shopping Ebay Australia, your local Op Shop, or trying your luck on this forum I reckon. If you have a month or so to hunt, you'll find one.
venerator Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 I somehow missed that shipping cost when I was flicking through. I guess I will have to wait and see what pops up on Ebay Australia in the next few weeks because there isn't much on there at the moment. I have missed the last few I saw on ebay because of last minute bidders so I will have to wait and hope my luck with ebay changes.
Guest Muon Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 (edited) Well that would be near $200 with postage from the USA, and shipping tables is risky and from one country to another, more so. I think you would be better off getting something local, have you tried posting a wanted to buy here in the classifieds? Someone here may have something better, local to you. Edit: Oops, beaten by minutes I think I noticed a similar Technics in cash converters at Moorooka today for $39 or $49. You in Brisbane? Edited August 29, 2012 by datafone
venerator Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 Yeah I am in Brisbane. I hit up the Brisbane record exchange in the city today but they didn't have much, I am yet to check out any of the cash converters though. I am worried about buying one in store as I don't really know what I am doing, where as online I can look into it a bit more.
Krispy Audio Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Yeah cash converters could be a goer. I'd definitely put up a wanted ad in the classifieds here. I think you'll get something soon enough. And you can still get great performance from inexpensive players. Good luck!
Guest Muon Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 (edited) I could check out the one I mentioned tomorrow for you, It's just up the road from me as I'm in Annerley. I can, make sure it works and see what cart it has, and let you know. The classifieds is a good idea, might get something better... Edited August 29, 2012 by datafone
venerator Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 That would be a big help (as long as it's not putting you out too much). And thanks CP, I will chuck a wanted ad up in the forum.
Guest Muon Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 (edited) No worries, I'll check it out and we can see what the rest of the guys think, and see what turns up in the classifieds too I think a mate of mine has a couple of plastic body Technics under his house doing nothing, I'll look into that on Saturday for you also, could be freebies, but these are silver body and were used for DJ work a long time ago, so may not be the best. Telecine Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 (edited) Contact member Pegasus, I think he can help you out with something. I believe that he still has a turntable to give away: Edited August 29, 2012 by Telecine
Pegasus Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Contact member Pegasus, I think he can help you out with something. I believe that he still has a turntable to give away: http://www.stereo.ne...ge__hl__ipswich It's still here in Ipswich if anyone wants it. Just needs a new TKS headshell mount. I presume they are still available. Should only cost a few dollars. The little "L" shaped clip broke off. You could probably make one from devcon or the like. Would recommend a new belt as well. Has Gold plated RCA plugs and decent cabling. 1
Guest Muon Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) I think I noticed a similar Technics in cash converters at Moorooka today for $39 or $49. You in Brisbane? OK, I looked at this one, and It's $49, and is a DB20 auto, is a "P" mount cart that has no stylus, and there is no strobe so impossible to know if It's speed stable.Give it a miss. venerator Posted August 30, 2012 Author Posted August 30, 2012 Thanks heaps for that datafone, I really appreciate it. And thanks for the offer Pegasus but I probably wouldn't be able to get out to Ipswich easily and I am not too sure I am up to finding parts and fixing up the TT (I am still wrapping my head around buying one). A friend of mine gave me a Pioneer PL-X11Z today which I don't mind the look of, but it apparently came with a Pioneer amp which powered it so I would need to buy a power adapter to run it. Plus it needs a needle. I am going to just scrap it and keep looking I think. A Toshiba SR-Q630 turned up in the classifieds which looks nice enough, but I couldn't find much info on it online. Does anyone know anything about this TT? I'm a bit bummed it isn't Technics to go with my amp, but as the guy pointed out it might be asking a bit much only looking for something in a specific brand and color.
Guest Muon Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 The Toshiba looks nice! branded under the Aurex name, Aurex was a premium line from Toshiba. Specs & manual here http://www.vinylengine.com/library/aurex-toshiba/sr-q630.shtml If It's in good working order, grab it if you can.
venerator Posted August 30, 2012 Author Posted August 30, 2012 How much do you think it's worth? While trying to google the turntable I actually found the old ebay listing where the guy got it from. He is asking $100 but he bought it for just under $50 for it in November last year.
