andyr Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I had the pleasure of spending Sunday afternoon at Duc's place (an Aladdin's cave of tube components and turntables ). Everything (basically) was different to what I have in my system: horn mid with small ribbon tweeter and 2 x 15" woofers in a vented box for bass (vs. my Maggies) idler drive TT (Garrard 301) on a beautiful plinth (made by Duc), with his latest wood-tube arm (vs. my belt drive LP12 / G2.2 with ceramic arm-tube) a Duc-special tube power amp (vs. my AKSA 'Soraya' and 'Lifeforce' ss amps), and Duc's latest tube phono stage (vs. my battery-powered, JFET phono stage). All I can say is ... wow! What a beautiful sound it delivered. Perhaps the best I've ever heard from a hifi system ... so it will be interesting to see (hear!) how much better it is when he has his new Goto horns up and running. Thank you, Duc. Andy

metal beat Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Yes Duc's system is awesome. The speakers are a bit different to when I visited, so I bet it sounds even better. So Andy,do you believe in tubes yet?

andyr Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) Haha ... do I believe in tubes, yet, guys? Yes, they can deliver a wonderful musical experience ... but I think you need suitable speakers. If you have them ... then you get a great result - as I heard last Sunday! My system - ss though it is - is made more enjoyable by the unity-gain tube output stage that Hugh Dean built into his GK-1 preamp ... that I know (having compared it with the sound I get when I bypass the tube output stage and just take the ss output). However, I couldn't run all tube (as i need 6 monoblocs). - my long-suffering wife would divorce me. Regards, Andy Edited August 27, 2012 by andyr
Telecine Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Duc, Love the turntable. Mmm....reminds me of another one that you used to own. ; )
cheekyboy Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) Well done Duc and I'm pleased Andy really enjoyed your system..........a huge compliment too from a man with a sensational system of his own. I'm lucky to get to see Duc and listen to his system on a fairly regular basis and he genuinely does a superb job on his tonearms, turntables, tube amps and he's not bad at putting a pair of loudspeakers together either. I've recently bought and installed one of Duc's Univector tonearms and it is just a stunning bit of kit in Black African Ebony and especially matched to a Black African Ebony cartridge..................here it is. Sounds better than it looks too! Cheers, Keith Edited August 27, 2012 by cheekyboy
caddisgeek Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 here it is. Sounds better than it looks too! That it does Keith, no mean feat either as it looks absolutely gorgeous

jaspert Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) the Goto system will be up and running in about month time. Duc Always a good time at Duc. Sorry I couldn't make it. Looking forward to hear the Gotos in the big room later. Yes Duc's system is awesome. The speakers are a bit different to when I visited, so I bet it sounds even better. The bass cabinets ( double woofers now) and the mid range drivers are different now. And yes, it is better than before. Edited August 27, 2012 by jaspert
