THOMO Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 (edited) I have owned Edgarhorn midranges for about fifteen years. Over those years they have just about driven me nuts trying to get a woofer to integrate with them.I have tried all sorts of things including many different bass drivers and enclosures, crossovers both passive and digital/equalisation and never quite got there.Yet there was something really special about them! I got very close and lots of people have listened to them in their various arrangements and loved them but I always heard an imperfect integration at the 500 Hz crossover region. This was not obvious on all recordings but it was there. In the end I gave up when I discovered how good the vintage Tannoys sounded in the right box.I can't understand why DIY speakers builders do not just use these. They come with crossovers and there is plenty of information available on how to get really good sound out of them. But it seems most DIYers seem to like to cobble together all sorts of exotic components and boxes and hope that ,by some miracle, they all gel together and sound great.Well I guess it is possible but not very likely. Anyway back on track. I cobbled together my Edgarhorns/Sammi bulllet tweeters and my Tannoy HPD 385s. I am using a 5mH choke on the Tannoys ,a 100 uF cap on the Dynaudio D54 dome midrange on the Edgar and a 2.2 uF cap on the tweeter.Crossovers do not come much simpler than that.An L pad is also used to attenuate the mids and tweeter and the speaker is biamped. At last I am getting really good integration between bass and mid and the huge and extended bass of the Tannoys seems to gel really well with the huge and warm sound you get from the Edgars [no compression driver I have heard sounds a patch on the Dynaudio D54 Std in my experience]. I guess the difference is the Tannoys were built to do midrange well [they crossover to the dual concentric compression driver at 1000 Hz].Most 15 and even 12 inch woofers are not. I wish I had discovered this years ago. The Franketannoys are sounding superb. The best sound I have had in my house.A huge and dynamic sound but also relaxed and warm. So it seems a waste to use a really good full range speaker just for bass and lower mid duties but I guess if it works why not? Edited July 2, 2012 by THOMO 1
