Bluroo Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 (edited) Well our trusty Silvia died on Friday and we were left without coffee. Tremors set in, sweat appeared on the brow, total confusion. Our machine is 7yo and has been a faithful server of the dark brew. (Black coffee in this household). In a dizzy haze I rang my coffee supplier, whom I know does repairs. The first comment was that they no longer stock the boiler for this unit. More sweat on the brow!!! But my man Basil tells me I can try the reset switch. I had the lid off so following directions with a shaking hand I find the minute little switch on the front top edge of the boiler and give it a little push! CLICK!!!!!! goes the button. Heart starts racing. After lots of thanks to my excellent technical support (Basil) I plug in the machine and yes warmth appeared like a glow on the horizon, promising a new day. Coffee!! YES! No addiction in this household. Sedated BR PS this is to give hope to other users if this happens to them. Edited June 30, 2012 by Bluroo
emesbee Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Good thing I don't have a coffee addiction. If my kettle died though..... (Who is Silvia, by the way?)

Silvia is my 2nd love after SWMBO. Rancilio Silvia coffee machine. Keep the fingers cross for the kettle BR PS I hear that a power cord upgrade makes the whistle more musical! A J Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I share your pain as our machine died - so dependant on it I forgot how life is without one - bloody expensive if nothing else
proftournesol Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I wonder what you would have been charged if you'd taken it to a coffee machine repair person?
emesbee Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Schubert wrote an opera about a coffee machine? Wow! He must have been a real caffeine addict.
Benje Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I remember what her mother said (Silvia's mother). I think he plays for melbourne (Colin S).
betty boop Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 ooh I bought a silvia after my breville died. I remember how I felt standing in front of a dead coffee machine. so great to hear found a way to resuscitate it back to life. the reset switch ..... one for me to store away....just in case hehe
Guest JohnA Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 the good ol reset switch. a boiler shouldnt have to be changed...but seeing as yours in now 7 y.0 maybe time to give it a once over and change a few parts. I recall when my giotto premium also through the red switch, it was the start of a couple other little issues later on. Now if the boiler does go, you can still get them, and maybe good to stock up now here are parts for pre 08 silvia's http://www.coffeeparts.com.au/domestic-parts/machines/rancilio-silvia-08
dialectically Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Had mine completely rebuilt by Grinders Coffee at their factory - great service (took about 48 hours) and cost about $300 for almost an entire rebuild.
Bluroo Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 Thanks for the link JohnA I think that a purchase of a new boiler might be the go. I have noticed some small specks of "Rust" starting to appear in the small jug I use for the steam wand outlet. It has never thrown this switch before so it could be a case of things a brewing. Better to be safe than sorry. Don't want a repeat of those cold sweats again BR
Phill451 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 The red button resets the thermostat. We have hade call to use it several times. The thermostat actually needed replacing once too. We get our 8 year old machine serviced at Cafe Bianci Leichhardt, for what seems a reasonable price. Another site I can recommend is coffee parts.com.au. I love the Silvia, no nonsense and makes a great cup of coffee.

I have purchased many spare parts from them and they are good to deal with. yea, grab the parts and have them on hand. here is another link to help you do all the work yourself. http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/repair.html Its not that hard. I did a complete strip down of my giotto premium at around the 6 year mark

Guest JohnA Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 if you are not comfortable doing it yourself Al, i can recommend Chris from Talk coffee. Not sure if he does these machines, but a phone call will let you know. Great guy to deal with and always happy to help
captainclive Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I have my Italian love affair with Gina Giotto, I couldn't imagine my life without my mistress. Glad to hear Silvia is OK.
