wechnivag Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has build a small bookshelf speaker using solid wood or bamboo chopping boards? They are usually very solid, dense, thick and well prepped to be warp resistant. Where can I buy an electric sander for use in sanding down my speaker enclosure (plywood not mdf ) before applying varnish or woodstains? Not the belt sander type, more the linear type, the sanding surface shaped like a clothes iron. Not to keen to sand by hand, not enough elbow grease ;D Thanks!
fishball79 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 What you are looking for is an orbital sander, can get one from any hardware store. Here's how it looks like. http://www.google.com.sg/search?q=orbital+sander&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Uqh4UbekLcTXrQfUkIGQBA&biw=1366&bih=675&sei=Vqh4Ue_THY_KrAeH2YGgAg
wechnivag Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Ah, i see, thanks!. I saw the random orbital polisher at Home Fix yesterday, no sander. Can the polisher be used as a sander?
DIYer Straits Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Not a good idea as you may have an uneven surface. You may get unsightly gouges if you're not careful. Best get an orbital sander.
wizardofoz Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Those shops behind jalan besar on the sim lim tower side but away from town ...kelantan rd i think can get ok mic brand if you dont need industrial strength
synthesis1624705793 Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 I thought about making front baffle of bookshelf speaker using bamboo chopping board but thinking that cutting it would be very tough.
wechnivag Posted May 2, 2013 Author Posted May 2, 2013 Thanks for all the replies, was tied up the last few days. Will be going Sim Lim and BHL this Friday to pick up a few items, will check out the sander then. Yes, bamboo chopping board is super hard! Think the jigsaw will have indigestion.. One other question - i saw Ikea selling a beeswax polish that can be painted on. Anyone tried this before to finish wood products? I'm thinking of using this vs varnish. Thinking of sanding the plywood and then finish with the beeswax. Hopefully can look a bit like those baltic birch enclosures, only with regular plywood.. http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/80188705/
