westendboy Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 The ST humtum 2 stars on it in one of the shortest reviews ever for a relatively big movie. I type out the adjectives and you can connect them easily.... ;D Anthony Wong... stoic... gravitas... unnecessary... episodic film... odd mix of realist historical drama and chopsocky gongfu action... overkill What to do... Half a star also will watch 8)

I type out the adjectives and you can connect them easily.... ;D Anthony Wong... stoic... gravitas... unnecessary... episodic film... odd mix of realist historical drama and chopsocky gongfu action... overkill What to do... Half a star also will watch 8) Just back from the cinema and I really quite enjoyed it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Let me see whether I can write something using ST's words. For the record, the ST reviewer got it quite right but I wouldn't give it 2 stars. Maybe 3. Anthony Wong as Ip Man is a superb move. He is best at being a man of few words and stoic in nature. Not many actors can act as a hero and villain, Anthony Wong is equally effective in both types of roles. He has carved out a niche with his craft and his screen presence lends the role of Ip Man a certain gravitas. IMHO Donnie Yen couldn't light a candle next to Wong in this area. Just don't ask me to bet on Wong if the two of them spar. The one undeniable beauty of this latest Ip Man offering is the set design. A lot of effort was used to create a Hong Kong in the 1950s. Many times I was ogling at the authentic stuff in the background. What didn't sit down well with me was the very vignette feel and episodic nature of the narrative. Lots of unnecessary characters are parachuted in and left after spending a short time on screen. I do understand what the director and writer were trying to do - each side character is used to highlight a facade of Ip Man - the gongfu exponent, the husband, the friend, the lover, the father and Bruce Lee's sifu. After awhile it really becomes an odd mix of realist historical drama and chopsocky gongfu action, with not much of a central narrative thread. Is this film an overkill and totally unnecessary in the Ip Man canon? Not to me. I love watching Anthony Wong and some of his 武德 comes off more authentic than Donnie Yen (No need to mention Tony Leung's version becoz I am still not completely convinced that it is a film about Ip Man). In Wong, I can really see his portrayal morphing into the man himself. The fight scenes are nothing to cheer about but it's still quite exhilarating to watch, especially the last climatic showdown with a triad boss. The one single misstep for me is the casting of Eric Tsang. WTF... the moment he appeared on screen, everyone laughed and it's not even supposed to be funny.
desray Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I believed Eric Tsang is one of the producers in the film? Guess he just want to be part of the final installment of Ip Man. :) Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2
Avonez Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 This film should be called Eat Man instead. Eat Man spends more time eating than fighting and with a physique to substantiate it. Just look at the real emaciated McCoy at the final scene in the pole sparring. Weakest Man of all. Rental or streaming only.
