ysl Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 My son took two full days to complete the homework for this school holiday, averaging about 6 hours each day. Friend's daughter have to go back to school for four hours, every day Mon to Wed, with homework to complete from that three days, above an on top of what was given to them the last day of school last week. Neighbour just to told me that her three kids completed their homework on Wednesday, pretty much spent last week end, Mon to Wed completing their homework . School holiday ? I think not ...
Chowbotak Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 The other day, the Minister OE appeared on tv to answer questions, nobody asked him to do something abt this? Whoever are responsible for making our kids live this kind of school life deserved to be fcuking whipped in public! CCB!
qrm Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 But surely its the parents fault as well? Cant you just say forget it there is more to life than work! lets go fishing, Ride a bike, climb a tree...instead. Lead by example? I do that all the time ;D in fact got a bit of a telling off from the school because of the lack of homework, we spend about 3 minutes a day on it. Daughter is having trouble telling time etc. LOL she is only 6! I would start to be a bit worried if she cant tell the time when shes 18...
Spunky Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 how old are the kids? My pr schooler only had to attend one chinese camp. Didn't seem to have much homework AFAIK.

ysl Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 My kid and the friend's daughter are P6 . I suppose p6 is an important year , but crap ! It is still a lot of homework for a school holiday. I went back and hought about it, it was about 8 hours of homework for two days solid . Neighbour's kids are sec 2, sec 4 and JC2
Spunky Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 My kid and the friend's daughter are P6 . I suppose p6 is an important year , but crap ! It is still lots of work cops,as, thought about it it was about 8 hours of homework for two days solid . Neighbour's kids are sec 2, sec 4 and JC2 These days sec school is very different with many of the top schools running their own programmes and trying to outdo each other. For pr school, I've seen worse....kids having to return to school on sat n sun to revising for their psle...but usually only those from top heartland schools.

A healthy level of competition is good, adds a little excitement. But I see this schools competing against schools going way too far. What disgust me most, is that the kids are used, for this competition. I mean, this is a bottomless pit isn't it ?

Whoever are responsible for making our kids live this kind of school life deserved to be fcuking whipped in public! CCB! This national conversation initiative, I hope will not be another talk and more talk, only . I also hope we do not have to re-visit this same issue again, in a year or two . The next stage, as it appeared on the papers. will be on the stress caused by the education system . The platform in which the conversation is being carried out is very important. I must not be one where the ultimate beneficiaries become afriaid to speak up . And the execution must not be short of the decision made.
qrm Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Bro, I think their kids are local school. Different lah. Why is there a law against parents saying "Forget home work lets go for a holiday together?" I know this was a bit extreme but my cousin was fed up with the education system, (he said it was just a way of brainwashing kids) bought a boat and sailed around the world world for about 4 years with his 10 and 12 year old kids and wife. Its all down to the parents if they want to go along with the rat race or hop off the conveyor belt?
Spunky Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Well, i guess if he can afford a boat that is capable of sailing around the world, and have the skill to sail it, he probably have a lot more options in life than a average joe. ;D ;D
qrm Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Well, i guess if he can afford a boat that is capable of sailing around the world, and have the skill to sail it, he probably have a lot more options in life than a average joe. ;D ;D LOL the boat was second hand and only 40ft, paid less then the average cost of a COE here! An Ang Mo Buddhist Monk for many years, then lived in the back of his pick up truck, fixing the fences of those huge OZ ranches. Can take a week just to drive around the perimeter of a single ranch. So certainly not an average Joe... which goes back to my point, why do parents want their kids to be the average Joe and follow the production line here, they grow up with the mindset that they want to be better than anyone else rather than wanting to help others and work with them so everyone can all have a better life together?
MC_Hammer Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 the ideal situation I think for primary school is Skip the schools...attend a few tution...sit PSLE as a private student attending primary schools these days is a COMPLETE waste of time I have a lot of customers sending their kids to Marlborough College in Nusajaya
qrm Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I have a lot of customers sending their kids to Marlborough College in Nusajaya I thought Sgers are not allowed to unplug from the Matrix and are banned from sending kids to international schools? (Apart from the big cheese grandson)
tsammyc Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I hate to tell you this, but the top schools in the US and UK are just like that in terms of homework. The schools that the delinquents go to are less intense.
YH Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I thought Sgers are not allowed to unplug from the Matrix and are banned from sending kids to international schools? (Apart from the big cheese grandson) Only if you try to enrol your child in a international school situated in Singapore. International schools in Malaysia are not subjected to local regulations...

Those who implemented and executing the system are mostly not, this is my best guess. I suspect there are some agenda, known only to some . My theory...objective is to achieve top grades at a national level, at the international platform, with that given annual budget. The pay scale, distribution of this budget, you be the judge . I have my reasons for trying to go along with this. Believe me you, I ignored a fair amount of homework when my son was at lower primary, only to get calls, after calls from the school . My son is good with one, two subjects, and is generally ok. Only problem is Chinese. I am totally comfortable getting calls, as much as I ignore calls :) I draw the line when my son began to get some special treatment, it was also then that I asked myself if my long term intention is to be in Singapore? We realised home is no longer. I have come to realise that there is a lot of grouping and categorisation . And there are consequences and benefits when one gets grouped in certain group. My family and I lived and worked in another country for several years, when we got a chance to return to homeland, we jumped at it because we truly missed home, ...and the chicken rice . When we returned to Singapore, my son was in primary one. Reality soon sets in, the loads and loads of homework, the huge gap between what is being taught in school, and what is expected of the kids - tuition , which leads to even more homework . I f...ing hate it because it took away our family lives . Any sapre time is spent doing school homework. White is the new black, and tuition is the new dirty word . I toyed with the idea if I should just packed up and go live my life in another country ? What will my son think ? When things are difficult we should just pack up and go ? What about other family members that can't go with us ? We've achieved some impressive numbers over the years, but we are also made to run fast cos if one slows down, one will get kick out of the factory . And the road back is either impossible or very , very difficult . All these national conversation , hopefully it gets to the right set of ears. We are already not being heard, soon, many of us will be replaced by another set of numbers.
jimi1624705950 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Ysl bro, sad story. Family life v important. My heart bleeds for kids who tell me they are up at night and cut sleep just to finish homework. On a lighter note, the chicken rice is better in HK. Nothing beats Wong Yow Gai for flavour (yellow fat chicken) :)

Create employment, perhaps. the only benefit is the social interaction, which in itself is very important. there are some remarkable school teachers, which my kid is fortunate enough to have had, but largely the good ones are disillusioned by the system, and are now either in another kind of work, or private tutors.

We want to enjoy the fruit of our work with our family and friends right ? I've never seened anyone enjoying a glass of wine alone, never mind how good it is. And yes, again, food is HK is superb. Many, many undiscovered gems among the " tai pei tong " Just this one week holiday itself, a few of my son's classmates have turned him down because their parents have line up additional tuitions for them in that one week .

Man that's a heart breaking story. When you get older and look back on life, its the fun times spent with the family that you always cherish and its actually during those bonding sessions your kid AND your own personality is developed. .. Something is really not right with the system..We can only hope the next generation does not have to suffer. My daughter has often asked some of her Singaporean friends her age to come over for play dates and the reply is always the same too busy at some tuition class.. Its sad when you go to Great world city to take the kids to run around the Amazonia playground you have to pass the Kumon Class, you see all the maids sitting outside with all the poor kids hunched over text books inside, when we pass the tuition centre I always remind my kid how lucky she is..... needless to say the Kumon Class is Packed the Amazionia Playscape is empty, maybe in 20 years time it will be the other way round!

No one tell me this type of things as I fly back alternate week to cope with Singapore Food graving.... Anyway, give me Boon Tong Kee or 5 stars chicken with that spicy red chilli sauce anytime!!! The Yellow Fat Chicken is OK , nothing great. Right now, the best chicken rice place in HK for me is that Sergeant Chicken Rice stall @ Food Republic Food court situation in Tung Chung. My son is now out of school....and now he faces working life pressure. I am glad he is coping well. I am glad I put that 14" TV with the SCV decoder on his study desk during his secondary school days. :) He told me I am fully responsible if he failed his exam because of my crazy idea ......... :) (Audio)

YFC is so chickeny it's amazing! :D Ok, agree to disagree- but bring me back a couple by Audio express! (I joke, but I really did bring one back after buying from e airport LOL!). Not sure if you know but BTK has an Imperial chicken range (last time I went anyway) which was tastier than the standard one. Agree that the chilli sauce is miles better in Sg. My parents always restricted TV for us kids. Unfortunately that meant I spent the first 3 years of Uni watching TV 24/7. Spent the next 2 years drinking and the last 2 yrs studying to catch up :D.

Spent the next 2 years drinking and the last 2 yrs studying to catch up :D. Precisely what I wish for; besides giving my son the break, he need...he can do homework with the TV on..... :) I learned this while eating at the SATS staff canteen when I was working at the airport. I suppose the food there is the worst.....we need to had lunch nearby so we have no choice. There I found many of the SATS staff, mostly from the inflght kitchen, eating there. I was curious so I asked them..."Hello, you worked in the inflight kitchen, there you can eat anything you want, why bother to come here for lunch, the food so terrible....." He laughed and said "When you are given the opportunity to eat good food every day, every meal, you want to come out and take the terrible food at the staff canteen...believe me, it is very refreshing....." Jimi, your parents should have ate at the SATS Inflight Kitchen staff canteen..... :) (Audio)
