RickEC Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 My Philips player, on the 13th month of purchase, decided to go boom. I opened up, one of the IC chip blew up. I called Philips, they need $60 to look at the problem. I figured I might as well buy a new one with another 12 months warranty. Geez, I turned down Harvey Norman's offer for another year's warranty when I bought that now broken Philips player. A bit regret. I heard from some that Philips players are known to be non-reliable. Not sure about that. So, can bros here share with me, what is the good player to buy now? Simple Requirement: - Play 3D - Play from Harddisk/USB - Must play many formats that I have on Hardisk and DVD/RW - No need wifi (got ethernet port can liao) - No need 2x HDMI I am looking at Sony S490 (since i don't need wifi of Sony S790). Any bros here can help?
francis wu Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Maybe u can contact Sevenz who has the S490 and may want to sell off since he got the S790.
RickEC Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Ok, thanks Francis. Not sure if can find him. Besides that, got say which one better now? Pioneer, Sony, LG ....
Guest pitch bender Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 In my opinion Sony is a good choice. Good value for money. Pioneer is a bit more pricey and it has the same quality. LG is a bit mass market... Oppo is good but not cheap...

Just went recce, let me share some info with bros who also might be interested. All the 3D Blu-ray player there: Pioneer BDP140: $299 Sony S590: $229 Sony S490: $179 - Highest in my list. Philips BDP3380K: $199 - I scared of Philips liao Panasonic DMPBDT320GA: $369 Samsung 5500 $139 LG BP325: $149
francis wu Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Rick, I would recommend the S790 which although over your budget, the extra money spent is really well worth it. In terms of PQ and SQ, it's ahead of all the BDPs you listed! The S790 is also 4K ready when u need it in the coming months/years! ;D
Doggie Howser Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Saw the Sony 490 came with MIB3 3D BR plus a USB drive for 170 ish
RickEC Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Thanks Francis, will consider S490 and S790. If got option to extend warranty period, I think I might buy it. I heard that 4K display is not cheap. I doubt I will go into it in near term. I am thinking S490 and S790 are the same, except for the 4k readiness, 2xHDMI and Wifi. Not too sure though. Sony doesn't support Divx, I hope I don't need that for my movies. Doggie Howser, mind telling me or pm me where did you see?

I heard PHILIPS even sells kitchen products there.

Plus a thumb drive. For 169. Thank you all kind bros here. I bought the deal that Howser mentioned. Plus extended extended warranty. Salesman tries to sell me 100 dollar plus HDMI Monster cable, of 15 gbps speed. I didn't buy, as I got a 10.2 Gbps speed one from china, Chosel brand. I read the box, 10.2 is the minimum requirement for Sony S490, so should be ok. Yeah, free 2 x 3D movies! Seems like a great deal! Got SACD some more? I'm surprise. Maybe try play my SACD, and connect to my DAC and to my 2ch system, dunno got effect or not.
Doggie Howser Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 SACD is best played using HDMI AVR for players in this price point. Most DACs can only accept SPDIF Toslink or AES and you can't send DSD information through them. Only cd quality from the SACD.

Too bad i don't have a HDMI AVR.
