louco73 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I was walking around MacRitchie on Saturday afternoon and got caught in a massive downpour just as I came out onto the golf course area with no cover. While I quite enjoyed the rain, my Samsung Galaxy Note II did not. Samsung says it will cost $609 to repair it, so I'm wondering if it's worth it or I should just get a new phone? Quest said I should get the new Sony since it's waterproof :p. What do you guys think?
domho8 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Inew Sony since it's waterproof :p. What do you guys think? I 2nd this. ;D
jimi1624705950 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 $609 to repair?! Def not worth it. Maybe get a quote from a repair shop?
louco73 Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Maybe get a quote from a repair shop? Ah, but Samsung will honour the warranty once the repair is complete and there is still 8 months left.
louco73 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Anyone bought from www.sgbest.com? Seems like they have good prices. I can sell off the old phone for parts if I can get a list of what is broken/functioning. Then I get a spare battery and stylus.
francis wu Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Bro, see my thread on PRC phones. Buy smart! :)
louco73 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 I just visited Francis (thanks!) and looked at his latest phone. The Oppo is indeed a very nice phone and value for money, but I'm in love with the Samsung Galaxy Note II's screen size. I'm just going to have to get another Samsung Galaxy Note II. Hopefully I can sell the broken one for parts on eBay :p.
wizardofoz Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 What exactly happened to it... waterlogged should be able to dry out... put in a bag of rice and leave it for a few days
louco73 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 The problem was it was still on with the water. I couldn't get the battery out when it was too wet. I guess something shorted and thus killed a few components. I wrote about it here: http://www.louco73.com/2013/03/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-water-damage/
jimi1624705950 Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 They say the most crucial thing is to get the battery out, its the thing that will short the phone. So with the iphone we are screwed
DIYer Straits Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 My Samsung SIII bit the dust suddenly and I sent it for repair. I suspected that it was the power supply unit but they gave me a new motherboard instead. For free as it was still under warranty. FYI.
louco73 Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Yeah, if it wasn't water damage, then the warranty would cover it. Even though I merely got caught in the rain, rather than drop it in the loo or go for a swim, it's still water damage to them. I've decided to go ahead with the repair after they confirmed the warranty would be covered for the remaining 8 months and they are replacing the motherboard and LCD.
cstanxpl Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Mobile Sq sells the Note II at $785 now and you get 12 months warranty. http://www.mobilesquare.com.sg/products/products_detail.asp?pid=1584&cid=17
louco73 Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 I wasn't convinced that was the LTE version, as they didn't list the bands in the specs. Anyway, I've given Samsung the go ahead.
n3wk1d Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 The title of the ads at mobile square stated lte version.
m0j0_vin Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I remember jumping in a pool with my Nokia 3200 in my pocket. Managed to get it out of the water after 30sec. It still worked after I let dry for a day. ;D
cstanxpl Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Singapore only bring in the lte version. If you do enjoy the rain, may want to consider something like the Sony Xperia Z next time as mentioned... :)
