the_king Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Hi Guys, my usage is for 80% movies (using computer to connect to TV either from websites like netflix or from dvd or blueray rent from shop, or steam, etc etc etc....) the rest should be mix of gaming, music, prawn, etc...... i have chosen this: DIA 10.1 DIA 10 CM DIA 10.DFS and or a/v i choosen this: Denon AVR-1713 because of this Audyssey MultEQ XT (not sure how useful for newbie like me) if it not useful my choice will be yamaha RX-V373 or 2nd choice is Denon AVR-1312 for sub is SVS SB12-NSD or PB12-NSD (not sure close or open port is better for my usage) Please advise. thank you guys
m0j0_vin Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I thought the Diamond 10s were good for the price. I used to own the 10.4 and 10.CS. Why not consider the newer 121 and 101c/102c? I would go for the 1713. MultiEq XT is a good feature for anyone (not just newbs). I had good results with my PC12-NSD which has about the same performance as the PB12-NSD. Haven't tried it at reference level but it already shakes my unit at -10db. The SB12 is good as well and I actually prefer it's sound signature over the ported one. It just couldn't keep up wih the PC12 on the low end. I'm using the SB12 corner loaded in my bedroom to maximize room gain. PC12 was in the living room that's roughly 2000 ft^3. I would suggest you contact SVS customer support and give them your room dimensions and sound preferences. They normally reply within a day and are quite helpful.

Bass wise, think u can go KEC to check out both sealed and ported woofers with a movie/track u are familiar with to see what u like. If u not into music, perhaps u may like ported more... but really depends. (this is the time which i 80% will be used it for) will the speaker or sub travel to other flat and they complain? sorry never own a hi fi before, so i have no idea.

And how loud is loud? if reallly loud, u can always close windows and on aircon when u watch. IMO, i would go for speaker option than headphones....

I believe you'll get tired easily using headphones, and it's friggin warm wearing them for hours. And unless you are really blasting, I don't think you'll be that loud to disturb your neighbours. Otherwise like what Sevenz says...close your windows while enjoying your HT.

I get the impression you really crank the volume up...be careful if NID. In any case, good music doesn't need to be heard loudly...but I'm not so sure about movies.
kzone Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 years back when I 1st setup my HT system, I got carried away on the 1st night n played till 2 policemen knocked on my door at 2+am. after that I passed my hp number to the neighbors around me in case I disturb them... I didnt receice any.. ever. Of course, I was more conscious n turn down the volume when playing past 11pm.

If u so sure u will blast past 1-2am, and cannot control and cannot sacrifice to be considerate, then you have answered your own question. if not, just control your timing when u want to watch loud. U have to make the trade-off yourself. i ask this as i have no idea how the bass will affect those people that stay around me. For me, I don't watch movies using my setup after 10:30pm to avoid unnecessary complains 8). However, I do occasionally play music as late as 1am. Of course at this hour I play mostly Jazz and Instrumental :). I think one of the most important factor is also our neighbours ::). We have read (or come across) about some nasty neighbours who are not tolerant to HT users even in daytime. I believe some bros here have encountered such neighbours.

If u r playing soft on stereo, meaning background listening, get a mini stereo set up. Don't waste your money on separates! If u r playing soft on HT, get a HTIB. Again, don't waste your money on separates!
ralfale Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Apart from that faithful night (which still gives me 'sweet' memories) when someone knocks on my door aggressively, i do not get complains at all even when i listen at my normal volume for past 5 years. My HT is in my room with windows sealed with some absorption material. Passing HP to neighbours and giving them heads up beforehand is really a good idea. I guess it also depends on how loud you play, or how heavy your sub is tuned, or how sensitive your neighbours are :D Tagging sdds ;)

That why i wanted to know how you guy deal at night if you play HT. also i said that if at night i cannot switch on, or if the volume soft until i can hear properly , i may get a headphone around $2.5 k for headphone plus pre amp or a a/v?

In any case, good music doesn't need to be heard loudly...but I'm not so sure about movies. not sure. i have no idea the volume level i can adjust to at night at i will be using it mostly at night. i do not want my ht to become white elephant. if i have to on very soft at night until cannot feel the HT, . might as well get a cheap HTIB or and spend the rest on a good headphone that is great for movies, at least no one will complain. if headphone maybe a sennheiser hd800 or grado ps1000 depend which is better for movies 80%, prawn 15% gaming 5%.
