wizardofoz Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 http://www.pstracks.com/pauls-posts/riding-crest/9694/ this one is the start of a series on power amps and headroom...enjoy
Instek_88 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Nice read. Thanks! Their marketing effort to bring awareness to their new power amp? ;D
wizardofoz Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 I guess... but the math still applies for issue I guess. Maybe more of an issue for singular amps and speakers as opposed to active speakers as the frequencies will play some part too I expect. Normally active speakers are going to have rather different crossover and sensitivities per amp
Doggie Howser Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Part 3 is out http://www.pstracks.com/pauls-posts/music-math/9706/ I think this series of article goes beyond just the "sensitivity" and SPL measurements of sine waves and IMHO it does make a lot of sense. Well worth a read.
Guest AndrewC Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Hmmm…. seems to be a rehash of whats been discussed by others before… Musical Fidelity's paper when they launched their Supercharger…. Peter Mitchell's ancient AES paper on dynamic headroom… Spectron's paper… Keith Howard's paper on "How Much Power Do I Need?"… Alan Lofft's papers… etc. IMHO, an amp with good dynamic headroom rating is probably better than just a megawatt rated amp… problem is of course not many manufacturers dare to state publicly their amp's dynamic headroom rating ;D… so absolute maximum power becomes the default yardstick.
TheMachinist Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 nice reads and thought provoking.. Everyday got topics, thnx Wiz
