Look out for early Horslips too, they are more Irish folk Rock with a hint of Prog.

Hehehe. Just put a couple ('Tain' and 'Invasions') in my second 'shopping basket' for the day! Seems to be right up my alley. Thanks.

Woot, another fan and they have reformed check them out that facebook thingy

Unfortunate cup of tea is one of my fave album titles of all time, but The Tain is an awesome LP.

I just can't come at that celtic/folk stuff.

Fair enough. Like yourself I don't listen to any lyrics (as you mentioned in another thread (I thought that I was the only person that never knew a word)) - so its something to do with the structure, timing, key, intertwining of themes or whatever, that appeals. The flipside of my coin is that I can't connect with blues based music, or jazz and their derivatives. Anyway its just a matter of personal preference - but its still curious how the brain can 'like' something and not something else that isn't too dissimilar.

Batty and Progladyte, you have got some serious taste going on there, kudos to you both.

Be Bop Deluxe barely made a ripple this side of the globe, mores the pity, as the great Kiwi bassist, Charlie Tumahai was a key member of Melbourne band, HEALING FORCE. All their albums are worth seeking out, but I recommend the LIVE IN THE AIR AGE set and DRASTIC PLASTIC.

Nice heads up for Phil Collins there, with the BRAND X albums being amongst the best of the era.

Aechmea, let us know what you get, you know we are interested. There are some great reissues coming out on Lemon, Cherry Red and the Esoteric imprints. Are you going for new stuff, or revisiting past loves?

Rock on Progsters.

GRACIOUS! - I had completely forgotten that album. Wow!

...... And VGG, well those guys were just bonkers, in the best way. I still cannot listen to GOD BLUFF completely sober- scares the 'oomscow' out of me still.

JJ , I suspect there is no one like you on the Otway Coast, keep up the good work.

To all the prog guys on SNA........

I have some seriously great links that concentrate on prog in all of its glory and which covers a heap of territory.

If you are really into prog but need / want to know more, PM me for a truly revelationary heads up.

But for starters, try:

What? Wash thy mouth out with a good Irish Whiskey while listening to some Planxty or Bothy Band, then you will comprehend!

SurfPurple, there is one of the original progressive rock bands by the name of Deep Purple. Heard of them? They took progressive in one direction, and the other direction led to PROG Rock. The Purps have tracks such as, oh, "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" I think you would concede this ditty has a melodic basis, and a melodic, yearning, guitar refrain.

Likewise, you could consider Porcupine Trees' track, LAZARUS, or maybe KING CRIMSONS' " I TALK TO THE WIND"- hint of melody there. How about the YES track "SOON". Or the FOCUS track " SYLVIA"- dash of melody there. How about JETHRO TULLs'

"LIVING IN THE PAST" or " BOUREE"- bit there I think.

Yeh, I'm ALL ears to 'melody'!

Deep Purple may have been 'labelled' progressive rock, because they could play 'rock' in a way that NO other band could play. (They had band mambers who were classically trained and they were brought together as a form of 'supergroup'). They WERE very accomplished muscicians!

The 'prog rock' label was NOT an accurate description of Deep Purple, although they did stretch the boundaries with some 'classical' overtones.

Purple's music has always been 'melodic'! They were ahead of their time. They were once described as HEAVY METAL! (only because they played HARD and fast). But we all know that is NOT the case!

"Sometimes I feel Like Screaming' is a VERY melodic song! I am not sure where you are going with the reference to this song?

I await to see what you are trying to say here!

Simply that PROG is drenched with melody, musicianship, experimentation, and it can't be written off as 'melody free'.

Nothing personal implied, I just love to wave the flag.

What he said! - Excellent stuff.

The 70's were certainly full of some wonderful, melodic symphonic rock whereas the 80's saw a further excursion into more experimental / dissonant / angular / territory.

Having said that, I find that some of King Crimson's best music from within their 80's output. I.E Three of a Perfect Pair / Discipline / Beat.

KC may not be for everyone but for a lot of fans the band still ticks a lot of boxes.

A couple of Marillion tracks to keep you going,

I'm trying, but I just can't see what's so 'listenable' here!
