The 1955 IWC lives in the drawer now; it's been replaced with my third Apple Watch. The IWC is nice, but all it does is tell the time! I do feel a little guilty; I'd never do the equivalent with my audio system

Ouch!

I'm on my second Apple Watch. Useful but I only wear it for monitoring exercise as it has no soul at all. It will also be landfill at some point whereas all my mechanical and quartz watches will be wearable forever with minimal servicing.

You are right, it has no soul; it's an appliance, but a very useful one. It's the equivalent of leaving the sexy fun of the Lotus in the garage and taking the Camry...because it always works, and does more things.

Something from a completely different price bracket today. The very inexpensive Casio Duro Marlin.

Watch game is very strong in Singapore. Raffles even has Patek clocks.  I brought over a couple of my best watches and very glad I did.

Supposedly a dive watch, I think I bought this just for the hands.

Carlisle sea timer, 21 jewels. I think water proof is a bit ambitious.

Anyway has a nice movement ticking away. The bracelet is just painted black and the bezel is just plastic. I'll give a bit of clean and polish.

Breitling automatic copy I bought in Morocco some years back for $20. Exposed heart beat.

That must have been a special price for you my friend. I wouldn’t have paid more than 10 😄. Which reminds me that I need a new  genuine made in Japan movement to replace the one in my Rolex.

I was happy with 20, they started a lot higher until I walked away for the second time. If Quartz (heartless) I wouldn’t have purchased. Its quite heavy it takes a lot of melted down coke cans to make one watch.

Interesting topic. This is a Seiko Chronograph (so called Bruce Lee model) quite collectible now I’m told. Original cost guessing around $50 (duty free)

I purchased this in Suva Fiji in December 1969 whilst on a pacific island cruise.

Unfortunately it has seen better days. No original band and stops intermittently.

I will have it seen to by Seiko service to restore to near original condition.

It might be worth the exercise  https://www.chrono24.com.au/seiko/ref-61396012.htm

Im told automatics should be serviced every five years.

To be quite honest Mark I haven’t worn this for approximately 20 years. It was never serviced. In fact I don’t wear watches and I have three seikos I was always damaging them. Awkward I guess. It was only recently that a topic popped up on fb that lead me to trace the Seiko story. Brought back many great memories.

Not really. They should be serviced as soon as they stop keeping reliable time as that’s a sign of parts wearing or the lubricants drying out. If you have a warranty that runs that long the manufacturer might want it serviced to maintain the warranty.

Will be worth more than you paid for it and should be serviced by a competent watchmaker (doesn’t need to go to Seiko).

Resist any desire or request for polishing or replacement of the dial or hands. The crystal looks like it will have to be replaced.

Thanks for your reply Oldrose,

Must admit I’m a little hesitant as to where I take it.

Ripoffs everywhere today. Wondering if it’s worthwhile getting a quote from Seiko.

The watchmaker I used in Melbourne retired some years ago so I haven't used anyone here. If I had an expensive or sentimentally valuable watch I'd send it to Hacko in Sydney where I've always had a good experience.

Highly recommended (by others) watchmakers in Melbourne are Bob Shao in Lonsdale St or Ken Ross in Ashburton.

Nick Hacko (as mentioned) sells and services Seiko in Sydney.

Thought I'd run old plain Jane Seiko 5 Tradie watch for a month or 2 ! Keeps good time, easy to read night or day, serviced every couple of years. Looks good with a stainless steel ring, on the left hand.

Saw this in a recent Starbuy weekend sale, cheapest it has ever been. Came very close to pulling the trigger... except I think it is a *tad* too big for my wrist.
