k-k-k-kenny Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 That link brings back memories. Always a pleasure to view Steve G's superd photos of his watches.Agree with Mondie about the simple and clean look of your vintage Zenith,K-K-kenny.Nice. Have you seen the recent Zenith, their charismatic CEO Thierry Nataf are hell bent on chasing the fashion crowd and some off the wacky monstrosities coming out is disturbing. Thank yez both n all - Mine's the same dial as Steve G's only original black. Though I say so myself I like this style dial (whether black or white) best of all the 135s. Back when I followed these things closely, I saw one white one on the bay in poor shape in the space of 4 years. I know of only one other black one (and I don't know where it is now - Gisbert was asking around USD 5 grand for it). Mine looks a bit fresher in person than the photos would indicate. Just like me, I guess. But overall, 135s are not uncommon - Zenith told me they made 11,000 movements. Pick one up for maybe 2-3 grand and you've got yrself as fine a handwinding 3 handed movement as has ever been made. (They outperformed ye Patek tourbillons in competition, but don't have quite the same cachet) What Thierry has done since he took his box of crayons to the Zenith art department is frightful. Still, if he weren't selling them, I spose he'd get the arse. The problem with the El Primero is that once you shove it into a 42mm+ case, it starts looking cross-eyed. But then, the whole big watch thing is a silly fad unless you're dealing with big movements, as the FA Jones and some Pannys have. Speaking of which, I met a man how knows a man who has a real Rolex-powered Panerai. Worth? Somewhere north of USD 100,000, last I looked. Lot of money for a workaday movement in a leaky case.
Mr_Gadget Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Hi, I'm thinking about getting a new watch. I currently wear a TAG CL1112-0 (pictured below) I am after a watch with a leather band and do not want to spend anywhere near as much as my TAG. Around $600 is my budget. I've had a bit of a look on the net and in shops and it seems that Tissot have a couple in my price range. I like the PRC200 range, these 2 in particular have caught my eye. What do you guys think of Tissot in general and these 2 particalar watches? I don't know which one out of the 2 I prefer. The black has more of an impact with it's bold colours (yellow hand) but the white looks more classy and doesn't look old mannish like some white faced watches can (I am 32 yrs old). Both of these are of the quartz movement type and I presume that a mechanical will be well over my budget. These next two are also from the PRC200 range but are mechanical watches, no idea how much they are and have not seen these in shops yet.
chilli nimrod Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I already have my grail watch shown else where in this thread (original Kobold PVD seal) but if I were to aim for a different watch I would go for something from the Sinn range. Exceptional value for the level of quality as well as fit and finish. Something like this one...
waricle Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I like the dark one -I could read the time without my glasses!! It helps when you hit 60!!!!
emesbee Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Those Tissot watches look good. I like the one with the black face and the yellow second hand. I also prefer a leather band. (Metal bands pinch the hairs on my wrist, ouch! )
itsgriffo Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I have a Tissot and, frankly, wouldn't buy another one (except maybe a Touch). I've found it too unreliable. I'm looking around for a new watch but everything I like is way above budget (Panerei, IWC, Tag Monaco, even Oris Frank Sinatra). I'll probably settle on an Oris Divers. Does anyone have one of the Russian brands? There seem to be a lot on the market at the moment - Aviator, Vostok, Zeppelin, Poljot, Buran, etc (see for egs www.redarmywatches.com) - but I don't know anything about their reliability. Cheers

Mr_Gadget Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 How about Breil watches? They have some interesting designs.
Amadeus Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Soultone, please don't make the same "mistake" I made: starting buying moderate priced watches because I couldn't afford the "good ones". I'd be happy to give back all my entire collection for just 1 nice piece (maybe a Pathek Philippe). Save for the big one. It might take longer but it would be worth every cent (even in terms of pure investment). BTW, that IWC is awesome. We seem to have similar taste in hifi, music and watches .... I still love my watches ! Just ordered this one.

Cheers Haven't heard anything good about the russkies. I guess I'd be going in with low expectations, hoping for a pleasant surprise. Speaking of which, I am surprised you've not had good service out of Tissot - pretty respectable mid-level make, usually.
k-k-k-kenny Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 I already have my grail watch shown else where in this thread (original Kobold PVD seal) but if I were to aim for a different watch I would go for something from the Sinn range. Exceptional value for the level of quality as well as fit and finish. Something like this one... I've a U2 - wanted a 2nd time zone. It's tough - seen satisfactory service as a hammer. Inadvertently, at least. Only drawback is that as far as I know it has to be sent offshore for service - lots of folk could work on the movement, but refilling it with gas might be hard. As mechanical watches go, I reckon Sinn are good value. Real tool watches, though the industrial looks wouldn't appeal to everyone. Meant to say to Mr Gadget - if you're wanting a chronograph, as seems to be the case, your only real chance in a mechanical watch at your budget is something vintage. In which case, it's a chancey business. You could get lucky on the bay, or end up with something that has a gazillion parts, all worn and only repairable for more than it's worth. In new, respectability probably starts with Longines, budget-wise. Somewhere north of 2 grand, I'd expect. Somewhere between that and 3 and a half you could pick up a classic Omega Speedmaster. Should be part of every gentleman's wardrobe. Which explains why I don't have one. In quartz, you might like to look at Seiko and Citizen as well as Tissot - the Japanese have been making good watches for a long time. Though I'd personally avoid any name that also appears on sunglasses, your Guess, DKNY etc are probably made o.k. by little Asian kiddies participating in the global economic miracle. Or you could go here for something, ah, completely different: http://www.tokyoflash.com/en/watches/1/
Mr_Gadget Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Well I ended up getting the Tissot PRC200 quartz silver face with brown leather band. I didn't like the look of the automatic version of the PRC200 and the new Courtier model (comes in various movement options) isn't released yet and didn't want to buy it based on a photo. Also the cheaper automatics from Tissot have a new movement so not sure if they are any good. Got a good price for it so it's all good I'll probably buy an automatic watch next time (couple of years).

Well done. Wear it in good health (as all watch idiots say to one another). Tissot being part of the Swatch group (largest of the European watchmaking groups by a country mile), I'd expect that any new movement is made by their related co ETA, which provides probably 90% or more of all Swiss mechanical movements made - whether to members of the group or others. So chances are it's basically sound. Reliability is all a matter of how carefully it's put together.
hybridfiat Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Alberto Repossi R1 in stainless steel with a yellow Guilloché face and large tritium numerals. The movement is the same as many other Swiss made watches Cartier etc and it really is waterproof to at least 12m as Ive been skindiving with it on. Dont expect to find one easily as he only makes 2000 a year and has 3 outlets worldwide. Monaco, London, Dubai.
k-k-k-kenny Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 That sounds like a serious piece of man-jewellery. Any pics? Off topic - I spent a day in Monaco a couple of years ago. Weird place - full of 70 year olds with leggy sluts on their arms. Or maybe I was dreaming and had a foretaste of heaven ...

I bought her a matching set of jewellery , watch, ring, necklace and earings in Charriol's 'celtic' style (she's Scottish). The Repossi has had a hard life as you can see, it is my work watch. Ill get it polished one day. Ive got a Raymond Weil Parsifal as a dress watch. Edited October 27, 2010 by hybridfiat Lost pics

saintpeter Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 G'day itsgriffo- i've got an Aviator mechanical, pretty good time keeper, but it's manual winding which is PITA. My favourite watches are Blancpain, (also part of the Swatch group) stunningly simple and stylish. I'd add a pic but that's beyond me.
saintpeter Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Well, it's taken half a year, but finally here's a photo. Not one of the more stylish Blancpain's though...
Rhett Morson Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I'll post a wrist shot of my omega seamaster when I work out how to do it
