Just completed a New Delite Amp

Had a listen to Tony's latest Delite amp.. I must say, it's even much better than the 1st version he built earlier.... I think the improvements are probably due to a much more overkill power supply and better parts.. this time around.. much more dynamic bloom and separation.. etc.

IMHO, the best amp Tony's built so far...  :)

uncle tony,

the guy selling the 100V 47,000uF capacitors is coming to singapore in september, he said he can bring along with him so there will be no shipping charges. (about 87 euro shipping cost)

i'll be reserving 4 pieces. he has another 4 pieces left. he said he will call me on monday or tuesday and we'll discuss.

Bro,

I already looking for Japanese lamp shades...  ;D

Wow,so nice , I like the cases,  this time the capacitor change to gold color and two extra black color cap ,what is the brand and value ?

Hope to hear this new amp at your house.

Wei Sheng,

I will email you about the capacitors.

my ugly delite prototype

heatsinks and chassis salvaged from an old SAE amplifier, so was the old transformer. alll the grounds are crimped and fastened together by screw, which allows for subsequent ease of disassembly (which results in the current state of messy suspended wires sticking all over)

i'm getting a bit of humming which i m wondering whether if the output cap is too small, or there is some pick-up as the mosfet is very close to the transformer. i'm intending to split the amp into 2 levels, with the psu level below the signal and output circuits, or it could be possible that my power supply is not good enough

its sounding really good despite the hum, maybe because i've been listening too much to low powered SETs.. so a higher current amplifier sounds different. awesome design from nelson pass.

a few short comings that needs to improved on

1) power transformer runs very hot..its even hotter than the heatsinks for mosfet. its only 461VA so this needs to be changed, will move into 2 x mono power supplies

2) power capacitors, 2 x elna 100V 10000uf and 1 x nichicon 15000 uf capacitor per channel.. 35,000 uf in total/channel.. is it too little?

3) to add a choke for each channel of power supply?

4) output capacitor is 63V 15,000uf nichicon gold capacitor, this should be enough?

5) to use better wiring, currently using teflon insulated OCC, but the single core wire and the thin teflon insulation is making me feel edgy with the higher currents going through the circuit

6) heatsinking is quite ok, the amp is comfortable to touch after hours of operation, but may suspend the halogen lamps higher as they do radiate a bit

7) i've yet to connect the speaker protection circuit, but will have to scout a small 12v supply for it

couple more weeks before i finalize it :)

The gold color capacitors are 8 x 10000uF 250V ERO Brand, The two extra dark grey caps are 10000uF output coupling cap.

You are welcome to have an audition.

Please call 94894783 to arrange the time.

vajrasattvasg ,

i have not built the delite but i have done the Zenlite. without choke or active regulation, there will be some humming on the PSU despite the high capacitance filtering. can be easily smoothed out when u have the choke in.

eek.  :o :o that means i might need to get the chokes custom done or are there any reasonably priced chokes that take abt 5A at 6-7 mH? would some of those speaker inductors work?

i'll be splitting the amp into dual mono power supply, so that means i would need 2 chokes

I used Air Core inductors of 2.5mH running in dual mono PSU.... forgot the rating but i remembered i did some calculation using the DCR and gauge size of the wire and confirmed that they were fit for a standing current of certain few amperes b4 i used them. my Zenlite was running something like 2.2A that time. for my application, the psu hum was reduced to very low levels despite the low inductor value. the safest way would be custom wind your inductors to the required spec if u are not sure.

You can use 2 x 400VA transformer for mono or 800VA for stereo.

The 47000uF 100V caps that you are getting in september should be good enough.

2.5mH Inductor for mono should be ok.

16000uF output cap are good enough.

I have extra 12V 2A transformer, you can have it.

Last night , fff and BTW was at my place listening to my new  Depletion Mode JFET  De-Lite amp.

We compared Depletion Mode Jfet De-Lite amp and  the Depletion Mode Mosfet De-Lite Amp.

The result is Depletion Mode Jfet De-Lite Amp sounds much better.Awesome mids and the top

end was just like a dream.

since it output is taken across the Drain, it signal is inverted(unless apply with an inverted input signal), any sonic impact on listening with this "inverted" signal compared with in phase signal we normally listen to?

...something to look forward to @ NoiSING  :)

Yes, the Mosfet version is already very good but the JFet Delite version is definitely much much better..... Good thing Tony managed to figure out the JFet implementation.....  8)

We usually use either Coral or Feastrex fullrangers.. so listening for correct phase is not that difficult..  When the phase is out... soundstage can get very wide but the focusing becomes very blurry... bass is also weak and rolled off... When  the phase is correct .. everything snaps in place , sharper imaging,  better and more tuneful bass..

In addition, I saw U227 toes and finger tapping away without himself noticing....

U can imagine how much U227 is enjoying....  8)
