Audio Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 they fell into the same trap with SACD/DVD-A can you believe it... and all surround formats failed in the market And for those who "heard them right" we are dying to grab all the SACD and DVD-A as much as we can........... :) (Audio)
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 And for those who "heard them right" we are dying to grab all the SACD and DVD-A as much as we can........... :) (Audio) Yes yes yes ... Recently discovered one of my fav albums, Keane's Hopes and Fears was released on SACD and DVD-A (dual-disc). Now I remember seeing this years ago at Sembawang and thinking $30 for music in 5.1channels... So stupid - music should always be in stereo!! Now the joke is on me Haha >:(
SiriuslyCold Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 there were a few albums even I regret not buying when they were available in SG... now most of the OOP ones are too expensive.
Audio Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I always think the reason why they pull the plug out of pop SACD is that the SACD version presents a very close to Master Tape version that by continuing to provide it, it will kill all future "Deluxe Version" releases..... So, now, George Michael can release a good sounding remaatered "Faith" that costs US$29 and perhaps milk you another time 10 year later.......as long as the public cannot get a "Faith" in SACD version..... (Audio)
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 there were a few albums even I regret not buying when they were available in SG... now most of the OOP ones are too expensive. Curious... What SACD and DVD-A u missed and regretted? Seriously, looking forward to anybody's reply. Perhaps I can heads up to stuff I missed Just from the top of my head... For me will be Toto IV, Peter Gabriel's So, Roxy Music's Avalon, Sarah Brightman's Eden and Time to Say Goodbye , Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Rage Hard :-[
lobster1624705763 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I am also quite late into the game. If you like the music and don't mind 2-channel only, you may want to try: Also, generally, I find Japan-pressed SACDs sound better especially for jazz music. Cheers,
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Am I right to say that the Japanese pressed SACDs and SHM-SACDs are mostly (all?) in stereo only?
dane1624705945 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I ordered Thriller on SACD from Amazon UK for GBP15 a few days before MJ passed, unfortunately it didn't ship fast enough and I got a mail saying no longer available about a week later. Maybe I will try to track it down again... any ideas?

Maybe I will try to track it down again... any ideas? I had MJ's Thriller in my eBay watchlist and it closed at just shy of US$100 this morn Wasn't intending to get but just curious at how high it would go. Read up on it - it's on stereo only and SQ of the recent remastered version CD is comparable to the SACD. Not worth it IMO
lobster1624705763 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 May be is due to the productin year, hope some experts can help. Below SACDs are all stereo, made in Japan and Europe. Cheers,
lobster1624705763 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Yeah, some SACD sq can be disappointing. My MJ and Wham SACD are only average in sq. Cheers,
Audio Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Curious... What SACD and DVD-A u missed and regretted? Just from the top of my head... For me will be Toto IV, Peter Gabriel's So, Roxy Music's Avalon, Sarah Brightman's Eden and Time to Say Goodbye , Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Rage Hard :-[ I regreted that before Elton John get to release all his albums on SACD, they pull the plug. Too bad none of the Beatles were even on SACD....their "LOVE" CD just missed the mark and was released in DVD-A when it should have been SACD. It's luckly I started my SACD collection very early (late 90s) and have less regret. The most painful one was Kraftwark but that's solved. I was aware of it pending release 2 months prior but before I can see it ophtsically to buy, the next thing I know was that it's already out of stock and out of print! Jimi had been tempting me with "Dance with Wolves" SACD but my copy is now in the Tung Chung Post Office. I hope no trouble this time after Woody_Book shipped me a normal copy after charging me SACD price. My SACD copy is probably the one they are trying to sell at US$66 now. (Audio)
Audio Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Since MJ's Thriller was so-so, I had it in my cart at US$14 at Amazon....until he passed away.....:) I have since bought a used copy....not bad.... (Audio) For info, Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and "Turnstiles" will be available as US Mobile Fidelity SACD releases soon.....
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Lobster...Waah I hate you... Wham on SACD!! You said u just came on the SACD journey... Don't bluff haha Billy Joel's An Innocent Man is very good but I am quite disappointed with Air Supply. How can the Carpenter SACD be so amazing and Air Supply so crappy? Kraftwerk... Hmmm must check this out Give me Billy Joel's Glass Houses SACD man!!

Garydrums Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I am currently using OPPO970HD to play all my SACD and DVD-A,. It funny that I just realized that to enjoy 5.1 surround sound on hybrid SACD, the audio out setting on the player has to be set to PCM instead of RAW. Just wondering if there is any playing in the market that allow multichannel SACD output to AVR in raw format instead of PCM.
Doggie Howser Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 a. your AVR has to support DSD over HDMI first. b. are you sure the Oppo doesn't? The 83/93/95 does.
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Mrs Postman delivered this Holy Grail into my hands a few min ago. OMG!!! The sound is sooo good :'( o yes, my tears are rolling down. On wed nite saw the Hotel California t-shirt at HMV (2 for $50) and had to get it ;D As I upload this, The Last Resort is playing... It's simply amazing... I hear musical notes and nuances I have never heard before :'( :'( Pic up just so to remind meself this is NO April's Fool joke ;D Eastendgirl, if u r reading this... Thank you sooo much :-*
Audio Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I hate you...Japanese version!! (Audio) Best track....New Kid in Town; Track 2! Play the Stereo 192K sample first....the go for full blown 5.1 channel 24/96!!!
landis1 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 i wish the eagles are playing at my house too. dont you just love it, when the stuff you order arrives just before the weekend ;D
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Yes yes... Now SingPost don't work on Sat and if I don't get it by Fri then it's like one more week later. Been sitting here listening... And forgot I have not had lunch yet. This is the BEST music I own yet Why would anyone sell this away? This will never leave my dying hands
SiriuslyCold Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 we should've bought two copies of each when they were (reasonably more easily) available heheh
Guest AndrewC Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Ironically, the only way I really listen to this disc these days is through my mass-market DVD-Audio player's SPDIF output into my DAC (at up to 16/96, no less). I've never in the past attempted to rip the 24/192 DVD-Audio stereo tracks... (maybe I should try now, I'm sure there are more tools available to get the job done ;)) This is the only 24/192 HD stereo version (advance resolution) that was available as early as 2002. Too bad not appreciated by all until now.... :) (Audio) Westendboy, here's another one for you, try and get the DVD-Audio of America album "Homecoming"... Title track "Ventura Highway" is stunning (let's hope we don't bust eastendgirls budget ;))
Wenda Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Just to name a few, Patricia Barber's SACD, a lot of Harmonia Mundi SACDs, as well as many of the samplers from focal and Burmester. They are now considered a rarity and can go as high as a few hundred dollars. The new pressing of SHM SACD does help in moderating the price (also to a level that many considered to be "outrageous"). Certain pressing on SACD is just unrivalled in terms of sound quality. I would say they are of studio master quality.
westendboy Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Westendboy, here's another one for you, try and get the DVD-Audio of America album "Homecoming"... Title track "Ventura Highway" is stunning (let's hope we don't bust eastendgirls budget ;)) Thanks for the heads up on America. Saw it in the accompanying leaflet in Hotel California. Hmmm didnt fig u to like the 'old' stuff Haha. Always picture u into the new music bands that are just breaking out, which nobody knows. Thanks to ur posts I discover some cool music like Warpaint's ;) Actually, HC is a once off thing bro. She got her bonus and wanted to pay for my latest purchase which happen to be HC. Sooo sweet eh :-* Another one in my mailbox. This is one of the top albums of all time in many critics' list - Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. Actually I only know Wouldn't it Be Nice and Only God Knows well but since it doesn't cost much higher than the HDCD, might as well go for it.
