Managed to convince the wife to join me on a hong kong trip on the weekend of the Hong Kong Hi-end Audio Show 2008

Of course she'll be off shopping for her 'gear' while I browse for mine. Just wondering if there are any bros who are based in HK or will be there that weekend, who want to meet up to the show, or even to the 'in'famous apliu street and mongkok to take a look.

I haven't been there before so i'm prepared to be bewildered and hopelessly lost/poisoned.  ;D

p.s. will be there from 7-11/8. the airport should be mad since the hifi show starts on the same day as the beijing olympics! 8.8.8 how auspicious! I'm destined for a bargain!

Oh you will definitely be poisoned when you attend this particular show.  Two days will be good enough for you to ogle and audition the equipment on display.  I am already kicking myself for not being able to attend this time as I will be needed somewhere else.

Perhaps you can pm DizzyD who is based in Hong Kong and ask him whether he is going too!

Good luck and enjoy............ :D

I was at last year's show. Definitely a big eye-opener. Maybe 2 days won't be enough! hehehe..

Last year's freebie was a very good compilation on SACD. So, expect something equally good, if not better this year.

Thanks a lot. I'm definitely looking forward to it. As it's my first time, what will be good value buys in Hong Kong? I know there are quite a few threads on hifi shopping in HK and I more or less know, besides the Audio Show, where to go hunting. But are there specific categories of hifi gear (besides 2nd hand records) that are better value in HK? also, not prepared to lug back 20+kgs' worth of pre/power amps/speakers. wife will kill me.  ;D

ahh .. i can only budget 2 days for the show la. rest of time is 'family time' wonder what this year's freebie will be. Do they allow cameras in the show? if so, i'll try and take some pictures of the setups and the show and post them back here.

Yup.. they allow photography. So, please take lots of photos to show us! :) :) There will also be lots of talks n demos, and live performances too. Expect to find the largest spectrum of hifi stuff.. from the cheapest to the totally stratospheric kind ;) Last year there were a few booths selling audiophile CDs/SACDs/LPs. I'm sure they'd be back again. So, get the $$$ ready! hehehe..

Bong, 90% of the hifi gear is cheaper than what you can get in Singapore.  Is a matter of whether you want to spend or not..... ;D

If you are free, go to HifiTone on the 16th flr at Park-in Commercial Centre at Dundas Street, end of Sai Yong Choi Street at Mongkok.  Ask for Arthur as he can source most of the stuff you want.

Good luck

very scary words ... :D blonde question, but there shouldn't be a problem with power supply when bringing something back from HK right? is it 230/240 as well?

Thanks for the recommendation for HifiTone. Will definitely go check it out.

They are using 220 volts over there, so no problem using them in Singapore.  Some are universal 100 - 240 volts.

Both HK and SG had the same colonial master.

So power supply is the same.

Car also drive the same side.

Acually being someone with an electronics background, I understand there is a difference between 220VAC and 240VAC (not just the 20VAC difference)...

Can't actually remember what it is.

Anyone using voltage regulators for their HiFi or HT set-up?

There is a possible risk, but hey if it goes bust, get a new one! HK hi fi is cheap. Get me a few wife biscuits too!

As stated on the 1st page of this thread:

"Singapore voltage is NOT 230v. Electronic euqipment meant for Singapore Market is rated 240v AC. Although SG's power supply is Stable "ceteris paribus" it DOES vary from 228-247v Ac throughout the day, throughout Singapore.

The lowest I have measured is 225 and highest is 247. Make sure equipement you purchased from Overseas be rated at least 230v AC, with this clause +/- 5% or +/-10%  allowed.

Contrary to general belief, your euipment will NOT emit burnt smell or smoke. It just dies a slow death. if not rated to take ac voltage up to 240v AC. A good example is the LED light for power status on your equipment first to die.

Consider NOT leaving your investment 24/7, even on STANDBY, IMHO. Esp when you run a dedicated AC line, nothing to share or steal power, so when there's a spike its also PURE DEDICATED SPIKE."

true true. will probably look out for decent power conditioners/surge protectors then.

pete, sure, i'll buy bigger isolators and tell the wife that they are wife biscuits for you.  ;D

The best buys at the hifi show will be the CDs!  Don't forget to buy some of the hifi tuning tweaks and cables.  Much cheaper over there.

cool. will be looking out for mainly smaller things (tweaks, isolaters, power cables/distro boxes) and the software (MIC CDs, old LPs etc)

as for NDP, if it were me, i'll auction off the tickets ... depending on how many tics, i may be 1/2 way there to a new CD player already.  ;D
