What do you mean first time? You mean after you watch first time no english subs?

petetherock Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Just a few more weeks to this, but considering the deliberate grain and greyness, I am not sure how much better it can be on my small screen compared to a 100" projector screen. But for those who have not got this, this is a real gem!
wiseguy1624705816 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 i was hesitant to get the bluray version of the movie cloverfield. but i must say it is one of the better movie upgrades from dvd. now i begin to muse about getting bob on bluray ;D
Yeek Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 i was hesitant to get the bluray version of the movie cloverfield. but i must say it is one of the better movie upgrades from dvd. now i begin to muse about getting bob on bluray ;D I'm also considering getting Cloverfield but hesitated....is it that good an upgrade over and above the DVD version? If yes I'll get it too man :) Same case for Band of Bros.....to get or not to get since it's supposed to be grainy anyway....get just for the better sound? Yeek
InnocentBlood Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Same case for Band of Bros.....to get or not to get since it's supposed to be grainy anyway....get just for the better sound? Yeek you can get it for better sound, better picture and most importantly, SUBTITLES!!! ;D
petetherock Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 I would not bet on the better sound and pictures yet, this is a HBO mini-series, and some of the surround mixes for previous shows are not much better than DD even if it is lossless you can get it for better sound, better picture and most importantly, SUBTITLES!!! ;D

widget Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Bro, it's juz released on 11 Nov. Mine is on its way :o) Sweet! :D Please give a short review on the PQ and SQ.... ;) Thinking whether wanna replace the DVD boxset with this one.... Cheers!
123com Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Sweet! :D Please give a short review on the PQ and SQ.... ;) Thinking whether wanna replace the DVD boxset with this one.... Cheers! I don't do reviews since I don't have a setup worthy of it, but I got mine yesterday and PQ and SQ are great to me. I didnt watch it on TV nor on DVD. PQ is grainy in parts but I believe that is intentional. Sound is excellent with good definition and lots of spatial effects; then again, there are MG42s firing non-stop and 16" shells landing all over the place and everyone is screaming and shouting :) For those who want to know, it comes in a steel embossed case, with nice shimmery effects - nicer than the DVD one. The discs are kept in a gatefold style, which is glued to the bottom inside of the case. So if you pull it all out it's about 3 feet long. No liner notes.
petetherock Posted November 16, 2008 Author Posted November 16, 2008 Those looking for comparison between different versions can look here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1085043 the majority of you that dump on this set haven't even seen it to compare--Many are admitting as much in their venomous posts. Those of us that have watched through this set seem to have come to some consensus: --softness and detail fluctuate throughout. --the majority of the grain remains throughout the series. (hell, in some shots, you can't see anything BUT grain--Eindhoven episode) --it is clearly better than SD (though I don't think it's "far and away superior")
widget Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Those looking for comparison between different versions can look here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1085043 Thanks for the link bro... Seems like they max the DNR as compared to HD-DVD.
zapp1624705742 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Digital Noise Reduction...removal of graininess at the expense of details.
dXter Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Received this BD box yesterday and watched to ep 7. The sounds are generally awesome, especially during the shelling, explosions and C47 flying overhead scenes. Noticed some post processing effects like DNR (some sort of smoothing?) especially on the faces in some scenes which had the overly done makeup look. PQ is definitely a vast step above the SD DVD box set in many areas. Can't compare to HD-DVD, cos I do not own one. There are pic-in-pic commentary and interactive info bar to select from, though can only activate either one during a playback. Overall it is definitely better than the DVD version SQ and PQ wise. p.s. Can't figure out how to get the interactive info bar to work though.
