to start with, i'm confused cos laid off HT for yrs. have to give up my projector / fixed screen setup cos moving to a smaller house, space constraint. hence, time to go back and settle for TV.

i'm looking at getting at least a 37" - 42" minimum. probably gonna be hooked to a DVD player, PC and in future a PS3? i dig gd PQ; SQ will be compromised due to lack of real estate :( need some good recommendations on the following:

1) LCD or Plasma?

2) HD Ready or Full HD?

3) Model / Brand?

Apologies but the more i read the posts here, the more confuse i get cos i have no idea to begin with. Hope someone kind can offer some options for me to consider, while i dig out more info mean time. Many thanks guys!

P.S btw, my firehawk fixed screen is on sale with Z1. SVS sub going up for sale this weekend. support leh :)

LCD or Plasma, really depends on what's your viewing conditions as LCD is brighter can outshine and not seem washed up when you have a strong light source (like those in stores), but Plasma imo has better blacks when view in your home...

However, you would need to see how it fairs since you will be connecting to your PC.  And for that matter, probably FULL HD will be more suitable as not you would have more resolution choices (if let say HD ready resolution) looks blurry to you.  You may want to get a display that has 1-to-1 pixel mapping.  Better yet bring a laptop to connect at store to see for yourself... granted it may not be the same as your PC but it will at least give you an idea.

Model / brand.. hmm... you will have to see for yourself frankly, the models i'm currently looking at (for Plasma as i don't intend to hook up a pc to it) would be Pioneer Kuros (current king of Blacks but you pay a premium), Panasonics (upcoming 80/800 series which will be comparable but not par with Pioneer blacks) and recently Samsung A450 / A550 series :)

Hope this helps, i know ... there's a lot of competition from the manufacturers hence choices therefore confusion, but i like to source and compare and then ultimately be able to buy something that i like within my budget ... so go out and take a look :)

well, there is no point in getting advice about which to get. There are already available for you by a simple search.

The easiest way out, set your budget, allow 10-20% stretching if you need to, then just look for those that fit into your budget.

So what if you really get the best TV among all? 6 months later, it become obsolete. Why spend extra if you dun need? You're not going to have 3 different brands of TVs at your house to compare everyday right? Once you're seasoned to it, you won't feel worse or more shoik anymore......

Bro,

You'll get a better response if you state how much is your budget ;D

tks for the response... i'm a simple person and no. 1 consideration when buying any equipment is value to performance ration. on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best), i'm looking at getting a display between 7 - 8. i'm sure once anything close to 10 equates to law of diminishing returns :)

as mentioned, i'll be doing more research... understand it's difficult to recommend as considerations may be different.

laid off HT for yrs... but if anyone here shares interest in car audio, link up with me!!!

Yeek (and those who PM me),

apologies, i need to be back home and check out which model is my SVS. it's definitely a 20-39, not sure PC+ or PCi. let u guys know. cheers!

went looking around past 2 days anf found the following for 42":

panny:

- PV70 $1999

- PV7 $1999

- PY700 $3399 + $500 voucher

- PV80 $2399

Pioneer 42" - $3200 +$99 for a compact 5.1 speaker system

The pioneer is definitely the clear winner in terms of PQ and aesthetics. colour is oh so nice, and 3D depth is excellent compared to the rest. however, the PY700 and PV80 is attractive due to price, and is full HD while pioneer is 720p.

is there really so much difference between HD-ready set and full HD set? is it worth to pay for a HD set? any comments bros? tks!!!

IMHO, it will be very much depend on your usage.  Besides the price, I chose the Pioneer WXGA over its FHD model as the TV is primarily used for watching SD content (i.e. cable, DVDs, even VCDs). Furthermore there is a vast difference in power consumption between the two as well as the amount of heat the panels radiate.

Juz my 2 cts..

for a TV, 60" and below, I can say with confidence: not much.

for value of PQ, you should go for the best WXGA panel in the largest size within your budget.

also remember, resolution is only part of the equation.  colors, contrast, motion smoothness etc, are also critical to PQ too.

.. although you have to get over the mental "block" that what you have is not the latest "full HD" stuff.
