*shhhh* I'm trying not to jinx the team

Riise scoring is already a stretch, right leg some more.... are you taking whatever armoury's having?

That sentence was made in jest lah! Started the line with "And to dream further..." didn't I?

Of course there will likely be an impossible dream but if for som freak reason it does happen, heh I'll take it!

hands up Man U fans who still have fingernails.

well congrats to Man U for reaching the final.

Too bad that the team on top for what seemed like 90% of the match didn't manage to score; in the end Man U were hanging on 'resolutely' (not that Barca managed any incisive moves).

Fingernails? I gnawed off my hand in those last five minutes!

But it's great to be in the final. Yes, Barca had more of the ball, but not in the dangerous areas, and apart from Messi, none of their players looked really capable of creating anything. United's players all worked their socks off, and don't forget that Rooney and Vidic didn't even make the bench.

Oh, and Francis...Thank God for old goats! What a goal by Scholes...

My heart was pounding fast in the last 5 mins too but for a different reason...I was hoping barca would score.;D

Despite dominating in terms of possession, barca wasn't exactly creating much esp in the 2nd half (dun think van de sar was tested at all except TH's weak header). Nice passes & touches but lack the penetration in the final 3rd of the field...reminds me of a certain english team ;D. Agree that they were relying too much on messi who had a great game but tired towards the last 15 mins of the game. The others were playing way below par (deco, TH, eto, xavi to name a few). Think wenger was wise to sell TH who seemed a spent force & didn't manage to touch the ball for a least 10 mins after coming on!

But I thot MU should have tried a little harder to get the 2nd goal. If can't score then play defensive in the last 10-15 mins lah. Brown had a good game playing alongside ferdinand. Great goal by Scholes which was the result of a defensive error by xavi who should have just slid the ball back to valdes to punt it up the field after dispossessing ronaldo. In all, congrats to MU whose players worked their socks off to protect that precious goal!

See them in Moscow! ;D

true that barca did not create, but a lot of it had to do with the great discipline of the united team. there was one sequence in particular when the camera angle made it clear - barca had the ball, and all ten of their outfield players were in united's half, but you could also see the united players perfectly lined up in 4-4-2 formation, with one row of red blocking the edge of the box, and the second row directly infront. they gave barca the ball, but reduced barca to pumping diagonal balls that the brilliant partnership of rio and brown could head away all night.

another tactical move was that it was primarily the wingers - nani and park - who were marking barca's wide men, with the united full back prepared behind as a backup. that meant that the barca players could never get behind the defence to put in dangerous crosses, apart from one or two occasions by the fantastic messi.

if you look at the game, while barca had all the possession, united had the better opportunities. two chances went just wide shortly after scholes' goal (park's sidefooted shot and nani's glancing header), and in the second half nani made space for a shot and almost had a tap-in if not for a great tackle by puyol.

it is not 'united style', or even english style, to go through 0-0 away and 1-0 at home, playing defensive all the way, but it is something that the italian teams, in particular, have always been adept at. fergie has painful memories of the many times that juve (especially) and other italian and german teams did the same thing to us, and he has spent many years instilling this ability into united's players.

it's not pretty to watch, but effective. the same tactics almost allowed an understrength united team to get a priceless 1-1 draw at stamford bridge over the weekend - they were really just five minutes away from virtually winning the league, and everyone would have said what a great defensive performance it was by united.

Your optimism is stifling me.  ;D

anyone supporting Liverpool all these years has to be an optimist... much less so than a Newcastle supporter but still... an optimist :)

kalou was offside and the linesman was not in line with the play :P

anyway, Chelsea would have to score two more goals to make things any more difficult for Liverpool than it was at the start of the game

come on you Reds!

I just found that statement so ironic...it used to be what Manchester United fans said!

"Always look on the bright side of life..."

About time Liverpool's luck ran out...

Anyway, it's not much of a choice in the final. The arrogant thugs  from Manchester? Or a team with Cashley Cole? I won't be watching this one... :)

Still, it could have been worse, a team playing only 13 real games a season could have won it!! :) :)

I honestly would have preferred a Liverpool win than either of these.  But since it's ManYoo v. CSKA, I guess ManYoo -- they've already won it twice before, at least they play proper football, they didn't buy their way into the top echelon, and this way we could still be the first London club to win the ECL.

IMO overall the better team won last nite. Chelsea looked more dangerous & created the better chances.

First half belonged to chelsea though reina shld hv covered his near post better but drogba played like a man on a mission & rifled the ball in! 2nd half was liverpool's as chelsea sat back & allowed pool to attack. Finally pool caved-in in first half of ET as chelsea scored 2 in quick succession. Must say that all 3 goals from chelsea arised from defensive errors. 1st & 3rd while trying to play the offside trap & the 2nd given away by hyypia who need not slide in with the tackle as ballack was running away from the box. Having said that, think essien's goal should have stood. Dun think reina's view was obstructed when the shot came in & he couldn't have done anything abt it anyway as essien was given so much space for the thunderbolt. At 2-0, pool still had a chance (though why rafa took torres out is anybody's guess! ???). But the 3rd goal all but killed pool's spirit.

My main disappointment was pool's quiet & subdued performance though they were the ones who need to score. The team seemed lethargic though most were rested over the weekend. Benayoun's only contribution was his mazy run & pass that resulted in pool's equaliser & was rightly substituted. Unfortunately his replacement, pennant, couldn't do much better. Kuyt too was far from his usual industrious self. SG seemed too worried abt picking up a 2nd yellow & couldn't provide the impetus & inspiration that pool desperately needed. The consolation...we finally manage to break the duck & score 2. Hopefully this will be a psychological boast for pool in their future duels against the blues at the bridge.;)

Finally congratulations to chelsea for a job well done. Now go on & win it in Moscow (no prize for guessing reason for the cheer)! ;D
