joeleow Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 hi bros, my current PC connects to my LCD TV using a standard PC audio cable. the TV connects to my AVR via RCA (red and white cables). this is how i am passing my audio to my AVR. does it help if i connect the audio directly from PC to AVR? do I use a cable as per below? thanks!
joeleow Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 or should I get a sound card that has RCA output for better quality? thanks!
SiriuslyCold Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 you should get a card that has SPDI/F out and let the AVR do decoding of DD/DTS streams

joeleow Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 i have been reading a fair bit about this SPDIF thingy... but so far I can't make out what is it all about... :( is there a picture that i can be referred to? I guess the higher end model sound cards from Creative would have this feature? thanks!
louco73 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Hmm, you should have a S/PDIF out connection on your motherboard and/or soundcard. On your computer it should be either coaxial or optical (TOSLINK). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF I presume you have had a DVD player at some stage and connected the digital out to your AVR? Same thing :)
joeleow Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Yes, my current DVD player is connected to my AVR via coaxial and my Xbox is connected via optical. So these are considered S/PDIF? I am currently using a MSI P35 Neo motherboard, without any additional soundcard. It only has 6 audio connectors, and no other coaxial or optical connection. Which soundcard is recommended for coaxial or optical connection? Thanks! Hmm, you should have a S/PDIF out connection on your motherboard and/or soundcard. kardtoon Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Any of the basic Soundblaster Audigy or X-FI cards will support SPDIF. If you want really good sound quality, consider a Auzentech Prelude 7.1. I have one for sale if you are interested.

joeleow Posted March 29, 2008 Author Posted March 29, 2008 i realize now that i keep hearing static noise from the TV speakers when i play either music (CDs & mp3s) or movies through my PC. The CDs are okay when played directly on my DVD player. Also, the sound is okay if I turn on my AVR and mute my TV. What seems to be the problem here? ??? ??? ??? Thanks!
Magnuz Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 You will need to go into audio card config and set to SPDIF-Out. Then get a cable like this http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video//rca-to-3-5mm-s-pdif-cables/spdif/prodSPDIF.html And connect the SPDIF out of your soundcard (small head) to SPDIF RCA-like port on your AVR.(big head).
xpander Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Sorry tompang abit. :D for the 3.5mm to SPDIF RCA cable, is it considered a co axial input?
Magnuz Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Sorry tompang abit. :D for the 3.5mm to SPDIF RCA cable, is it considered a co axial input? It is coaxial. Just that I guess sound card makers ran out of space to put full blown RCA connectors at the back. So they downsized it to the 3.5mm!
