Quest88 Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Hi, just wondering if anyone has seen much of these around and has any brands to recommend I have a look at? 50 inch seems to have hit mainstream prices already, so was wondering if there are any bargain deals to be had for 60 inch. SXRD still abit too bulky for my tastes. :) Size/price is more important than image quality to me as I use my TV for PC monitor. Looks like brands like Amoi have disappeared off the face of the earth!
Speedsun Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Wow...Going for 60" now ? Hmm Samsung 60" Plasma seem good...
Quest88 Posted March 25, 2008 Author Posted March 25, 2008 Well, I have lived with 40" LCD TV + projector for a long time now. Realised I never used projector anymore unless visitors come over, so quite pointless to get another one, even though it has the visual impact.. Might as well combine the budgets and get a bigger TV which gets far more usage. :) If too expensive, I might still go projector route, but invest in a better screen. Hopefully will reduce problems of light control during the day.
Speedsun Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 60" is still quite Steep now....guess must wait for awhile til the price soften.....

Quest88 Posted March 25, 2008 Author Posted March 25, 2008 That's quite sad if true. I'm probably willing to pay around the range of $10-15k. Lesser the better. :) http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6475_7-0.html?filter=100021_11089294_500963_7947724_ Sad that you can see US$4-6k prices on CNET. Didn't find much info otherwise. Preferably HD but not a critical factor, and of course, don't mind out of date models. Contrast/color performance is not important. What's important is that it takes PC signals well.
Speedsun Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Bro go for Sammy 60" ....its in yr budget range.... ;D .....Big Bold Beautiful
weiht Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 not much 60" LCD/Plasma in singapore available. 1 hand can count. i think there are 60" pioneer plasma around $20k. 65" panny plasma around $20k. 70" samsung/sony LCD, think cost more than $50k. and of course the 103" panny plasma , around $99k. Wah, 103" plasma!!! Seems like u also get urself a free heater in the room, HOT
Speedsun Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 but i think 60" too heavy to wall mount ....scare wait yr wall crumble down with Tv on it :P
imbest Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Samsung? I think there is no 60", the size above 50" is the early 2007 P7 63" model, it has to be full HD at this size. Actually P9 (Q3 2007 model) has 58", but it's not available in SG at all! It's 5884 in the states. Actually you dun have much choice u know? LG only has 70" in SG. Pioneer is just way too expensive. Maybe you shall give MaximumCredit/HongLiang a call to see if they can get you some good price. Samsung should be clearing their 63", if not they will just let it rot there only......pressure from their very own 2008 models, as well as the 11th gen Panasonic THX models.... do you want 30000:1 contrast? ;D those price gundoo mentioned are initial launch price, I dun think you need to pay more than $10K for a 63" Plasma.
tsammyc Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I've had full HD 60" 1080p Sony SXRD since Nov 2006. I would guess its probably around $6K now. It still bests most plasmas and LCDs for watching movies. However, it needs 2ft depth and cannot be wall mounted.

shaqqy Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 think pioneer haf 1 60" plasma goin for 12k+.........but its a monitor...meaning no tuner built in.if u dun mind, mayb can get for u cheap........
c7221624705751 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Quest, if u dun mind resolution, the pio 60MX20 is the best buy now. http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/62/105/502/PDP-60MXE20/index.html This panel uses the 7gen panel (507 era). DVI input, supports 24p, and has the lowest power consumption of all >60" plasmas (450w). It's industrial grade and designed for 24x7, the build is very solid. I almost bought this, if the 60" Kuro is not coming. I've carefully looked at this model many times. Really a gd panel. Price today is <10k.
velocity1624705768 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I saw the Samsung 60" plasma at HN Millenia going for about $15K. I also have the Sony 70" SXRD. It accepts PC input but if you set it to the max of 1920x1080, it will have black borders all around (this was the case with my xbox360). Other resolutions (1280x720) is not a problem.
imbest Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 coz the SXRD is 720p panel? or maybe its VGA connection (the circuit board) can't really support ful HD properly.... the 60" full HD Plasma is P7, old model which launched about the same time as Q and C series for the 42" and 50"s. $15K is rubbish price, can ask those shops like MaximumCredit to see if you can get better price for it. They should be clearing this stocks unless they are not bringing in newer bigger size Plasma.....
velocity1624705768 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 The SXRD is full HD 1080P. Its the VGA connection that can't properly support the resolution. Yeah...suspected the plasma is an older model but it sez full HD so if you can get a better price at Max Credit, then it shld be quite a good deal for a 60" full HD screen.
Quest88 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 Really sad that SXRD can't support 1080p over VGA. Need to iteriate this is for a monitor, not TV viewing, so this is pretty critical. No tuner is fine. c722, Thanks for the tip. Viable choice given the price. To be frank.. I think 1080p on a 60 inch may be too small for my distance of 2+m, so 720p may be just right. One reason I'm considering a bigger screen is because fonts on my 40 inch LCD looks a little too small sometimes. I gotta use the 150% feature on IE sometimes, or squint a little. This is why I was leaning towards projector still, but since its for PC, I won't wanna live in the darkness all the time. Have done that about 4 years ago when LCD was just so expensive, and found it wasn't very pleasant over a long period. Gotta think about this. :) The alternative is to find a good projector screen and use standing lights.

imbest Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Quest, actually you can try using a VGA converter to component and connect your PC via component input. Should work for 1080i at least.
velocity1624705768 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Really sad that SXRD can't support 1080p over VGA. Need to iteriate this is for a monitor, not TV viewing, so this is pretty critical. No tuner is fine. Must stress again that the 1080P displays fine over VGA on the 70" SXRD. Crystal clear and sharp. Only downside is that it doesn't fill up the full screen and has black borders all around.
tsammyc Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I haven't tried it myself, but I believe that if you get one of those PC video cards with HDMI out, you can get 1920x1080 full screen.

Only downside is that it doesn't fill up the full screen and has black borders all around. since it's not full screen, does it mean it's not a 1080p output but er...720p output?
tsammyc Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 since it's not full screen, does it mean it's not a 1080p output but er...720p output? Its a 1080p native display. Its just that there are some problems iwth the VGA electronics taking in a 1920x1080 analog signal and mapping it into the display. The HDMI works fine. Most of the current video cards with HDMI output have a specific 1080p setting.
