aquarius Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I just bought a 40" Sony LCD TV 40V300A HD-Ready TV and a HDMI 1.3 cable from LHS. I had tried connecting via the HDMI cable from my Marantz DV9500 but the screen is blank when switched to HDMI. It seems that the DVD and TV are not talking cia HDMI. They are now connected via component and it's fine. Without HDMI connection, I am not able to upscale the output. Is there a compatibility problem between these components and the cable. I could not make any adjustments as I could not even get to the set-up screen. Any help will be much appreciated.
cn9601 Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Huh???? But u indicate tat Component is fine ??? :o So u shld be able to call up the Setup screen of yr DVD ::) Anyway, quite a common problem, though. And commonly it is a matter of choosing the 'right' HDMI output mode - 480p / 720p / 1080i / 1080p. Also check the TV type - PAL / NTSC. Commonly, using composite RCA (Yellow) should get u the screen. Tat is, if u have initial video screen prob with HDMI, use composite Yellow to configure. I am still having the composite Yellow connected, just in case I itchy hand change somthing n get the Death Screen of <Blank> ;) Hope tis helps..... I could not make any adjustments as I could not even get to the set-up screen. They are now connected via component and it's fine.
aquarius Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 Many thanks. The DVD is connected via component and it works fine. I had tried connecting the DVD (with disc playing) via HDMI but when HDMI is selected, the screen is just blank. I have removed the HDMI cable and now using only component. BTW the cable is for HDMI 1.3 which supports full HD and 24ps while my DVD is the older HDMI while the TV is only HD ready. Could it be the cable?
kemp98 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 possible "handshake" problem. Try turn on your TV first, followed by your player. If this failed, try to turn both on at the same time.

BTW the cable is for HDMI 1.3 which supports full HD and 24ps while my DVD is the older HDMI while the TV is only HD ready. Could it be the cable? Shouldnt such cable be backward compatible ? I am using the Sony Bravia "D" series..and is connected to a samsung dvd player via the supplied HDMI cable.... I had also bought a $10 HDMI cable from playasia to connect my PS3 to the TV. I dun recall any setting require from either the DVD player or PS3. I just browse thru ur player's manual.....Is ur player HDMI switched to "on" in the setup page ? If it isnt, pressing the HDMI on the remote control or on the player will definitely result in a blank screen. HDMI This setting is used when the unit is connected by HDMI or DVI with a TV or projector. This setting is enabled only when the HDMI option of the FL menu is On. (page 32) Press ENTER 1 Select Resolution • VGA <640 X 480> • 480p/576p (525p/625p) • 720p (750p) • 1080i (1125i) Select one of the above with the cursor buttons (5/∞) and then press the ENTER button. If still cant, suggest u try the cable on frens' equipment or borrow another cable to try on ur equipment.
aquarius Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Thanks for the tip cracker. Let me try it the next few days. My Marantz is abt 2.5 years with HDMI and I am not usre if it is backward compatible. Will try out and report.
lwm99 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Also check that your selection on the TV side is correct for HDMI input.
SiriuslyCold Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 My Marantz is abt 2.5 years with HDMI and I am not usre if it is backward compatible. 2.5 years old Marantz is the one thats backwards *LOL* ;D the cable should be compatible though as should the TV - they'll all just fall back to the lowest common protocol
aquarius Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 2.5 years old Marantz is the one thats backwards *LOL* ;D the cable should be compatible though as should the TV - they'll all just fall back to the lowest common protocol The lowest common protocol should be the old HDMI standard of the Marantz. However this is not happening and therefore suspect that it could be the cable.
aquarius Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 I thought I found the solution, but alas, no. I had set the player to HDMI On using the setup menu, disconnecting the component cables then connected the HDMI v1.3 cable, then turned on again. No signal... I guess I'll just stick to component out for the time being. sigh...
dna Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 do u have another hdmi cable to test? i suspect it could be the cable as well. faulty cable

It was on page 27 on my manual ("D" series model)....
aquarius Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 It was connected to HDMI 1 on the TV. When I select HDMI 1 with DVD connected, there is no signal at all except that it shows 480p on DVD display. That is why I suspect that it could be the cable compatibility.
cn9601 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Tis may not be directly relevant to yours. But I receive PCH, I have tried the bundled HDMI cable on Denon 1930, connecting to Onkyo 875. Somehow Onkyo indicates No Signal. Then when I switch back to the previous one, it's OK. Strangely, when I use the same bundled HDMI cable on PCH, connecting to also Onkyo 875 - NO PROBLEM :o I can also configure PCH for 1080p23.95/24/60.....720p. Strange cable phenomenon ::) It was connected to HDMI 1 on the TV. When I select HDMI 1 with DVD connected, there is no signal at all except that it shows 480p on DVD display. That is why I suspect that it could be the cable compatibility.
