imbest Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Since it's could be dropping price like crazy and it's able to upconvert everything to 1080p? better than the best OPPO DVD player? saw quite a few selling at $400 or lower.....
DizzyD1624705734 Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 you should if you plan to get a number of HD DVD which is on firesale in australia right now...I have gotten about 20 titles at AUD 9 before shipping....In fact in Hong Kong, XE1 is clearing at SGD 470 and I am damn tempted to get as a 2nd player. cheers
imbest Posted March 9, 2008 Author Posted March 9, 2008 nope, solely looking at using it as a upscaled SD-DVD player, coz I dun have a DVD player yet mah. DizzyD, can share where you get those at just AUD9? that's damn cheap man! even cheaper than some original DVD in SG!!!! have you shipped yours? With SGD$470, I think it's about the price for getting a XBOX360 + HD-DVD drive. Wouldn't that a better value compared to standalone HD-DVD player? I'm just worrying if XBOX360 would be easier to operate to play HD-DVD and DVD titles..... I am also wondering if XBOX360's upscaling capability is better than HD-DVD.
Norman_Chan Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 This is the link for A$9.90 HD-DVD movies .... http://www.ezydvd.com.au/promo.zml?pid=740&ddat=1&dsal=1&dreg=1&dper=1&himg=pr740
yellowhandman Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 why spend money on a technology that is already dead? even if you pick up a bunch of HD-DVDs that are on offer, those are the only ones you'll ever get.
imbest Posted March 9, 2008 Author Posted March 9, 2008 why spend money on a technology that is already dead? even if you pick up a bunch of HD-DVDs that are on offer, those are the only ones you'll ever get. coz I dun have a DVD player mah. and i dun have a AVR that upscale the SD either. Well, some movies are not available in bluray too, and if the price is right, I dun mind to keep them lor. but seems like the price is still not low enough :D may still stick to VC-1 or H.264 hee....
pschia Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Since it's could be dropping price like crazy and it's able to upconvert everything to 1080p? better than the best OPPO DVD player? saw quite a few selling at $400 or lower..... What are the players and where can they be found? So far all the HD-DVD players I saw are still selling at their original RRP. ::)
petetherock Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I don't know where players are selling for $400 in SG, but some machines in other countries are going cheap. BTW didn't see a HD DVD player sale at the recent IT show. Anyway as a owner of 3 different HD players, they make nice DVD players, but if you are starting from scratch and have no HD DVDs now, there are alternatives, eg the new Oppo for around similar money. From past experience, they are pretty fast loading and playback quality is pretty ok too. Even though I own them, I have no need to convince others of their potential or quality. Oppo, Denon, Pioneer etc all make decent region free SD DVD players. The added advantage is the availability (for now) of cheap hi def discs that is a bonus. But the build quality is totally different though... eg an XA2 or XE1 is the top of the food chain in build quality and with its heavy chasis, metal remote etc, you feel like you just bought a premium product. Not so for the Oppo. Right now, I use my XE1 for many of my R6, R1 and R4 movies, and I have gotten used to the slower startup. Video quality is fine on my 50" HD ready panel.
Chowbotak Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I have compared the A35 and Oppo 970 for upscaling. The Oppo was better. For better upscaling the XA2 will do a better job. XE2 no experience with it.
redders Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 IMO, if you could get hold of a cheap HD DVD player and those fire sales HD DVDs, by all means please do so. Cause nothing beats the real enjoyment of watching actual HD materials than any SD DVD upscaling.
Quest88 Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Agree with redders. If you are planning to buy more SD-DVDs, the price could be comparable to those fire sale HD-DVDs for existing options, which makes it a viable choice for now. I assume threadstarter is still buying SD-DVDs afterall, unless this is to purely upscale his existing collection? Xbox HD-DVD audio and controls aren't as good.
Audio Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 The world is populated with all kinds of upscaling DVD players. It makes no sense to buy a HD-DVD machine just because it is cheap; it can upscale like what most other players can do. (Audio) ....unless subconsciously the real reason is that you really really want to do HD-DVD, isn't it? You are just dying for an excuse..... :)
imbest Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 sigh, decided to drop all ideas about all the plastics.... think I shall still stick to H.264 and VC-1 at the moment....
