Norman_Chan Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Anyone start using this new type of disk ? http://www.memoryworld.com.sg//index.php?option=com_products&prodtype=15&Itemid=21
louco73 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I think the technology behind these needs a bit more time to mature. I saw an article where the claimed performance gains just didn't add up in the real world, specifically around write performance. I think 2009 would probably be the time to get into this area. If you need lower power and noise then go for it, but don't expect the performance improvements.
Quest88 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Agree with louco. I think there was a new Lenovo laptop where there was SSD option and without, and they benchmarked that there wasn't much difference in the battery life. Nor was there much of a diff in performance. Negates the theory of a faster and lower powered device. The way its going now is that SSD technology is being incorporated into traditional HDD, so they have a 2nd level cache of sorts. Too expensive to implement on its own. However, I guess another benefit of SSD is that its pretty much shock proof, so that may have some useful applications in portable devices that aren't that tiny (GPS devices, larger mobiles, PMP, etc). But of course, HDD are getting better at that as well, and smaller too.
