Quest88 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Think quite afew of you guys travel for work or leisure. :) Am making an impulse trip to London, and am deciding between a direct flight or one with a stopover. I've not been to Athens or Amsterdam, so was thinking of doing so. Can anyone give me any tips or comments? Since its just a stopover (likely just afew hours but can extend to a day), I'm not sure I will have anything to do there anyway. haha
SiriuslyCold Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 If you have the time, its always nice to have a look-see plus there's mushroom bars in Amsterdam ;D
varun1624705824 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 A few hours are pointless. A day... hmmm... you'll likely only get a few usable hours. After 9/11, check-in and security takes forever. In London, as long as two hours (so if you get to the airport 2 hours before your flight, you're at serious risk of missing it). The same would be true of most other European airports (Paris - which used to be an annual trip - is quite efficient though I've no personal experience with Athens or Amsterdam). Also keep in mind that most European airports are significantly outside city limits and you'll spend an hour plus to get to the city, and taxis are absurdly expensive (I remember a taxi trip in Geneva that cost 80 euros!!!) Bottomline: if you have a day, it's possibly worth it. If a few hours, it's a waste of time. Also, if you fly direct via SQ, you could be on the 777ER (the economy class is somewhat better with bigger screens and brighter cabins) or, if you go later this month, the A380. These are on the non-stop routes only. Tip: If the airline isn't putting you up in a hotel (very rare these days), look for an airport-Ibis (typically 80 euros a night, throughout europe); they're cheap, clean, new and, importantly, close to the airport so you can get to the hotel, dump your baggage, and get out quickly. - V. Quest88 Posted March 4, 2008 Author Posted March 4, 2008 thanks varun. i think direct seems like the best choice as well. i can always visit again when i have more time. :) i think i don't mind having the hassle of stopover one way, and staying longer at that time. but the 2nd time when i'm tired and headed home, well, i think i will be just irritated by the disruption. aren't A380 tickets much more expensive though? i will be going in early april. i guess i won't mind topping up a couple of hundred for the experience.
naglfar Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 If you have the time, its always nice to have a look-see plus there's mushroom bars in Amsterdam ;D There's more than just mushroom bars in Amsterdam. A stroll through the red light district is always an interesting experience ;)

A "mushroom" consumed could land you in jail in Singapore in the unlikely event that there's a check on arrival for some reason... - V.

petetherock Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Bro it depends on whether you are into city sights, shopping etc I would do direct and head for the nearest Richer Sounds Hi Fi shop in London and get a few bargains, but thats me. Otherwise take the train to Paris for a day trip or even stay a night. BTW if you need a backpack for your trip, let me know
DanDon Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Is Cambridge Audio product cheaper there? Do you have the address of Richer Sounds Hi Fi shop? May drop by next week if I got time & able to locate the shop. I would do direct and head for the nearest Richer Sounds Hi Fi shop in London and get a few bargains, but thats me.
varun1624705824 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Slightly OT but on my last trip - late Jan or early Feb (I forget) - I went to the Imperial War Museum. Quite an experience, particularly the "WW-1 trench experience". Overall, big thumbs up. Strongly recommended. - V.
petetherock Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Google for them There are many in London Go for the run out items for good deals. Quest88 Posted March 4, 2008 Author Posted March 4, 2008 BTW if you need a backpack for your trip, let me know Thanks. I might need one else I'll have to lug my samsonite everywhere! Planning to go Croatia like 9 days! I think London will probably have enough to keep me entertained. Have checked the A380 flight. Gonna cost $2300+ for economy. :P Btw pete, no more significant other for time being, but I won't mind taking my travelling partner to Paris! haha

A stroll through the red light district is always an interesting experience ;) Ya... go to Amsterdam Central station, walk straight from the station about 2-300m then turn left. ;D Seriously Amsterdam is a nice place to look look see see. Amsterdam Central is not far from Schipol airport.
petetherock Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Can someone recommend a good minicab that goes from Heathrow to the Docklands area? There are so many choices that it's quite confusing... Thanks
