Wanted a new AVR and  went to 'test drive' the above with a loan of friend's 805 and colleague's 7002. 805 is damn heavy!  :o

A mini feedback of the 2 AVRs in my poor man's 4m x 3m room  :-[

I'm using AVR as pre and Rotel 1075 as power for my Quad 22L, centre, 11L. Am not considering 8002 as it's $500 more and I'm not making use of the torodial transformers. Same for 875 as I have no need for Reon HQV,  and the $2k price tag.

Movie: The mid bass seemed tighter and extended for the 805 in HT. Dymanics wise, 805 does more slams and punch. Slightly more extended treble and details are crispier. Not tt 7002 is muddy. Perhaps it's their DSP processing differences?

Using HD-A2 as source

Music: In 7002 pure direct mode, 805 lags behind. 7002 is more involving, with creamy warm midrange and vocals that will melt seamlessly with the high end. 805 seems brighter to my ears.

Using Marantz 67SE and Original 9.8 as source.

All in all, both are good and I will enjoy either one in my room. I'm biased towards 7002 as price is $200 cheaper and musically more involving. On the other hand, 805 does what it's suppose to do, Movies! And it's the reason for owning a AVR for HT.

I do have a dedicated pre-power amp and CD player for music

Decisions decisions. Any advices? Thanks

I was listening to a 875 vs Yamaha 1800 at KEC and that is exactly what I felt on the 875's pure direct mode, but that was using the receiver's amps, a Cyrus CD player and $4,500 B&Ws. The midrange and vocals on the 1800 were much sweeter.

Some clarifications.

My opinion is not to belittle Onkyo products. I already have someone pm'ed me and chastised me!  :o

As i have a dedicated audio setup, my listening is skewed when using AVR to listen to jazz or watever. Heck, Marantz dun even come close. By and large, no AVR can replace a decent level dedicated audio setup. All in all, I may buy 805 just for it's HT abilities. I'll leave music to my other amp. (7002 is excellent in HT in its own ways too)

I always think that we should state our opinions as we see it, but with some sensitivity in case there are people who own the equipment. There was nothing in your post that would warrant being chastised.

Agree with Sam, you should be able to express what you like, even if you don't agree with others who love their kit. As owners we sometimes wish to hear only good reviews to justify our purchases, but its ok.

Do write more bro

I am also considering the 7002 or even a 805 as a pre-pro just for HT, occasionally doubling up for a spot of stereo listening.

Cheers

bro... i tought the 8002 with toroidal transformer will better suit you?  ;)

might be going down to audit it wif a frenz at the same time audit a CDplayer i might be buying too. :)

Err... its a lot more than 1k bro...

Anyway DJQ, I don't need the toroidal, since if I get one, I will use it as a pre-pro, the ATI or the SR 12 will provide the power.

pete,

side track a bit. How much did u pay for your ATI 2505? I understand it's around 1k? Went Merdeka and was quoted $2k!  :o

Anyway bro if you are skewed towards HT for this setup, then spend the money on the HT biased amp, since you already have a serious stereo setup. I agree that a lot more money has to be spent on a musical AV amp to make it as sweet as your other stereo system.

Either sounds pretty impressive, but also take into account how they sound paired with your choice of speakers, eg are your speakers bright, neutral or warm?

Wow, ATI + Rotels... a serious 7.1 system... be careful carrying those ATIs... very heavy...

After you buy, best to spend some time setting it up, treating the room etc, the equipment will only carry you so far then the rest is a lot of effort to recreate the Odeon in your home...

Have fun, sounds v promising.

At times, I'm having bass 'bloominess' from the rear ported floorstander during music. HT is ok cos I set to small. Space is very constraint in a 4m x 3m area. Placement is giving me headache. Can't put in too close to wall, can't place closer to seating position.

Where can I get some bass plugs for the rear ports? If someone can direct me to DIY, even better.

Anyone got WAF foams to recommend?

Bro you are welcome to pop by and see how I resolve floorstanders, bass etc in a small space, am on leave from Thurs and most nights are ok after 9pm.

Chastised?? Wow.... That is a bit aggressive man. Yeah, I agree with sam, there was nothing in your post that would warrant being chastised.

Btw, even in pre amp, it does has brand using toroidal amp for better amplification. For instance, Integra(Onkyo sister company) DTC 9.8 Pre Pro is using toroidal amp despite being a pre only.  Hence, there is nothing to say no need toroidal in pre, it depend how is the design of the product.

If you have a dedicated stereo setup, I see no reason you get Marantz 7002 instead of Onkyo 805 given you find 805 perform better in movies (which is pretty common anyway). In stereo, there is no way a Marantz AVR can sound as good as a dedicated stereo setup unless you are talking those super budget stereo setup.

A roll of small towel or socks will do.  Oh.. please not the smelly one ;)

Socks worked for years.... until I got SVS ;D

Those 3" ports require at least a hand towel...

Bungs in the ports may help tame the bass, but IMO the whole musical presentation is affected, when you are here today, carhorn, you can figure it out for yourself

Hi, I had my 22L in my hall which is 3.5m X 6.5m and sometimes it still boom like hell with some music.

You can get some medium size washing sponge for less than $1 each to plug up the rear port which I had tried before with satisfactory result.

The proper way to tame bass is a BFD and a SPL meter, but the new receivers all have EQ for bass frequencies so all you need is a SPL meter.
