htfreak Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 As I will be heading off for my year-end holiday trip soon, the itch to get a HD video cam to capture all those glorious memories started to erupt again. Gingerly surfed to pricejapan's website to find out the latest price for the HV20 and was surprised to find the 40GB equipped HG10 available for an additional S$175 only. Now stuck between going for the tried and tested HDV based HV20 or the newer AVCHD based HG10. Personally I hate to deal with blank tapes as I find them a nuisance and time consuming. However, in the name of visual quality, I'm willing to bear with it. Hence would like to hear the thoughts of the folks here on which is the better buy. :-\
tsammyc Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I'd stick with the HV20. AVCHD typically has worse quality than HDV so unless you find some professional review that says they found the HG10 to have equivalent PQ to the HV20, I wouldn't go there. I always download from tape to my media server after a shooting session so I can play on the PS3 and the video is well organised, and in one place. You can re-use the tape, or in my case, I dump it into a dry box for archive (just in case something happens to the media server) along with a few hundred tapes from the past 20 years. In the case of a HDD camcorder, 40GB is equivalent to just 2-3 tapes (20GB each tape) on the highest quality mode. When your HDD Cam fills up, you have to empty it to an external place anyway and you don't have a permanent original to archive anywhere. Where are you going?
zapp1624705742 Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Haha being an owner of the HV20 - i also agree that tape based storage is still better than HDD. I mean with the PS3 playing back those m4t files is straight forward. That said - i have not used my HV20 since my Japan trip :p

liverpudian Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Hijack this thread for a side (but related) question. I am looking for a video-editing software to edit my HDV recordings (m2t files). Any recommendations? After transferring the recordings to the laptop/PC & editing them, how do I playback these recordings on my LCD TV (in HD resolution) without connecting the laptop/PC via the VGA port? Cheers!
htfreak Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 Maybe you can find the info you need at this HV20 forum http://www.hv20.com/index.php

HI, I recently bought a Sony's HD video cam and it came with this Sony Vegas. It also came with a 3 hour free training. Surprisingly, Vegas is so much simplier to use than Pinnicle Studio etc. I think you can consider the software which you can download as a trial. Do a search for Sony Vegas. Cheers
htfreak Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 I think tsammyc mentioned in the other thread that he was using Adobe Elements to do his editing. You can try getting his opinion on it.
tsammyc Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Don't have much experience editing but Premiere Elements 3.0 was quite easy to use... and allowed me to burn a DVD to pass to friends.
htfreak Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 Only got an email informing that they will verify the cash deposit on saturday. Still waiting for tracking number email.I think yours really special case lah.
tsammyc Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 If it doesn't arrive by the time you have to leave, you can borrow mine.
htfreak Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 If it doesn't arrive by the time you have to leave, you can borrow mine. Thanks for the offer mate. Will let you know if it really comes to the crunch. Still no email from them. Haiz..
liverpudian Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Maybe you can find the info you need at this HV20 forum http://www.hv20.com/index.php Thanks! Will check it out. Cheers Mine is a Sony too but unfortunately when I bought it, Sony Vegas is not included... just some HD browser. Read somewhere that it is not cheap either (then again which Sony product is ;D). Don't have much experience editing but Premiere Elements 3.0 was quite easy to use... and allowed me to burn a DVD to pass to friends. Guess the DVD it burns is in SD? Does it burn to HD or BR discs? Anyone knows if the current HD players in the market is able to play HD/BR discs burn from HD Editing s/w? Otherwise seems like the only way to watch HD recording is to connect the TV directly to the laptop? Understand that HDV records in MPEG2 format (same format as typical DVD-Video). Does this mean that I can transfer HDV recordings directly onto DVDs & play them on standard DVD players in "HD" quality? Came across a Corel Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6Plus software in Challenger couple of days ago. Selling for a little over $100 (academic price). Anyone has experience/knowledge on this s/w? Cheers!
htfreak Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 Latest update. The player got shipped out of Tokyo yesterday evening and touched down in HK at 2am. Has since left HK and should be arriving here by today. Just in time for me to spend Hari Raya playing around with it. ;D

Premiere Elements 3.0 burns to DVD, but I think later updates allowed burning to BD. If you burn a BD it is compatible with Blu Ray players. The Sony PS3 will play the raw HDV m2t file whether on a DVD-R (as a file) or on a media server. The MPEG imbedded in HDV m2t files is too high a resolution for standard DVD players. However, software like Elements can downgrade it into DVD compatible resolution I used DVD MovieFactory a few years ago. Its pretty simple to use and generally quite good. Elements is a bit more complicated.

Just in time to play with it during lunch ;D
