tsphua Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi, Anyone knows where to audition Pioneer S-1EX Speakers? How much are they retailing for locally? Cheers.
overlord1624705760 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi, Anyone knows where to audition Pioneer S-1EX Speakers? How much are they retailing for locally? Cheers. Try MERDEKA AUDIO @ SLS; which quoted to me at S$16K, was considering this speaker a year ago. To tell you frankly, I am not impress with this speaker, given that I have audition this speaker 4 time, twice in Singapore, once in Tokyo and once in LA; may be it is because of the setup with Pioneer eqiupment (not that I have anything against Pioneer gear). :-\ You might want to auditon the S-2EX instead, a 3-way bookshelf. ;) Cheers!
tsphua Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 16K! I was hoping it will be around 10K. Other than Merdeka, any other place with proper setup to audition these speakers? Cheers
MC_Hammer Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 My God $16K ????? if it is made of 18K Gold maybe $16K can set up a whole decent home theatre liao !
overlord1624705760 Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 tsphua, I can't think of anywhere else that does carry the S-1EX, except Merdek; my experience was a year back. If you like beryllium based speakers, you might want to consider Focal-JMlabs Electra Be series or Usher Be Series. Just wondering, since you are interested in S-1EX, could you share the rest of your setup? ;) Cheers,
tsphua Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 I am running on heavily modified Cayin A-88T and Cayin CDT-17A. Just sold my MA GS20 and almost decided on the new MA PL300. But I am exploring alternatives at the same time. And the S-1EX popped up as a candidate
tategoi Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 There is a pair on demo at the Pioneer boutique in Adelphi. However, it does not do the speaker justice by using a Pioneer AVR to drive the speaker. I suggest you bring your own gears or go borrow from any friendly audio shops.

If i am not wrong , they connected their speakers to myryad amp MXI2150. Feel free to go there n take a look.
tsphua Posted December 15, 2007 Author Posted December 15, 2007 Just came back from there. The source and amp don't do justice to the S-1EX. Can't really gauge the performance. Tested JMLabs 's 1027BE as well. It seem a bit bright for my taste. Looks like MA's PL300 is still the most suitable for my taste thus far.

Hi, Just curious, if you don't mind sharing..what was paired with the JMlab 1027Be? Solid state or tube amp? Am interested in the Jmlab Be range too...first impression a couple of mth back, I listened to one setup using solid state amp and NAD CDP..it also sound a tab bright for mine liking too. But heard another setup using older Jmlab speakers (not Be tweeter yet then) but paired with tube amp, sounded very nice to me. Am running tube monoblk (EL34 tube), now looking for matching speakers.... Regards
tsphua Posted December 15, 2007 Author Posted December 15, 2007 Was solid state intergrated amp. The 1027Be images extremely well! But other than that it didn't really catch my fancy. Plus from the reviews I had read, you will need a mascular amp to drive it.

tategoi Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 I was driving my pair of 1027 Be with MF A3.2CR and Plinius SA-102, the warmth sounding of the electronics tamed the 1027 very well. They are not tube, but more tube than tube. Just a few days ago, I replaced the MF with an Octave HP500 SE tube pre-amp, the latter was so neutral that it revealed the bright and edginess of 1027 Be. If you prefer warmth in your music, please avoid the Elektra range. The similar size Diva Utopia Be sounds more sweet and musical than the 1027 Be, but the price is too prohibitive.
darrenowl Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Interesting view from a user, thanks tategoi. Will likely try more speaker choices before deciding...another alternative is the Usher Be bookshelves. Regards :)
ohlins Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 interesting comments...... cos i have heard the 1027 a few times..... with rotel class d and canary audio tube amps...... never found them bright at all.......... i guess different tastes....
