wayoveryonder Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi, I am buying a gift for a budding photographer, I have narrowed down to two brands: (1)Nikon - which model?...D40 with kit?, D40x, D80? (2)Canon - which model?... EOS400D, kit 1 or kit 2 ONLY THESE TWO BRANDS... budget - maximum $2,000.00 a Christmas gift.... ;D
game_goondu Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 you should ask him what brand he prefers instead of asking us.

PeterSG Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Flip a coin! Both equally good. Difference? The feel when holding the camera. For a gal with small hands go for Canon. It is lighter IMO.
silencer13 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 You need to know what he uses now. If he's using Canon now, then get Canon, and vice versa. No point he's using one brand and you buy him the other, then all his lens, accessories etc go to waste. But if he's a totally new photographer with no preferences, I'd recommend Canon. (actually both also good lah, but I'm a Canon user) For Canon Digital SLR at below $2k, you can get: EOS 400D Kit II (EFS 17-85), listed at $1,999 at Canon Singapore website. Kit means comes with body+lens, so no need to spend more money. Or if he already has lens, then can get: EOS 40D (body only) for $2,099 (should be less than $2k at dealers). IMO, EOS 40D is the better choice, but if he starts from scratch then he needs to invest on lens which is not cheap.
Guest jonlee Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Canon vs Nikon...is something like LCD vs DLP here in XP, or Liverpool vs Everton in EPL. Each swears by its own supporters. U seldom find a Canon user who cross over to Nikon, vice versa. BTW, I'm a Canon user. ;D

Thank you all for the imputs..looks like Canon is the choice...the person I am buying the Christmas presenr is a budding camera user..already owned a Canon camera...not the DLSR... I am the old school SLR user....in my days, hope to own a Nikon SLR camera...but could only afford a Minolta... OK..understand the lenses... so...the Canon win hands down.....If it is for myself...I will take the Nikon for its pedigree... thanks all
silencer13 Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 By the way, the person you are buying for is very lucky! I've never received a $2k christmas gift before..... heck, I've never received a $20 xmas gift before. ;D ;D ;D If you can, get the EOS 40D. I just went thru the specs, they are very impressive.

Call me Santa!...and tell me where you live & the location of your chimmey, I will out one under your Christmas tree on Christmas Eve..., don't go to sleep!!! ;D It was a proimised Christmas gift for a very young girl....who is a good with a camera..
silencer13 Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 haha, no chimney, rubbish chute can or not? ;D ;D ;D Lucky young girl! If she's really serious about photography, the EOS-40D is the best choice. You pay a bit more, but it has DIGiC III (EOS-400D is DIGiC II). I'm now using an IXUS with DIGiC III (my 3rd Canon IXUS and 4th Canon digital camera), and I can tell you DIGiC III is heads and shoulders above the DIGiC II. Picture quality is really super, it even beats my old Canon EOS-300D quality.

hosm Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Hmmmm... Nikon D80 kit price have drop to S$16xx Seems like all Canon fans here.... :-X

hocl Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I'm a nikonian ... what type of canon camera does she have? if P&S, can buy both depending on her preference ... otherwise, stay with canon so she can continue to use the lenses.

The other Canon is A510, the present had been bought and given...EOS400D EF-S17-85 IS USM Kit, for $1,999.00, comes with two free 1MB Cf card, Canon SL1200 tripd, Canon camera bag, and another Digital Camera Kit(mini tripod, another small camera bag & cleaning kit)....now will Santa give me a set like that?... :P....I have to keep a promise made anyway..and happen that SANTA WALLET is rather fat this year.. ;D
Quest88 Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 i went thru similar dilemma previously between canon n nikon. even though i did feel that the canon was better value for money then, i still chose a nikon just cos of the feel of the camera with cameras at that weight, i think quite impt for u to feel comfortable holding it n that shld be the biggest consideration

I have always wanted to own a Nikon SLR, but could not really afford one...are their DSLR just as good as their SLR's???

I have Sigma tele zoom for years and still find the zoom direction rotation irritating as it is opposite direction with my other lens. Camera handling is important.
petetherock Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Bro you are buying as a GIFT, so go with your pocket, and if possible ask your recipient to go along. Each will have their supporters. You can also find out more from the local forum www.clubsnap.org I have been using Nikons for 20yrs, and the Jap or Thai ones I got still work, no issues. Nikons tend to be heavier, tougher built but fall behind in features. I am happy with mine. A sample I took in Siam Reap: Nikon D80 18-200mm VR
silencer13 Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Bro Pete, he bought the gift liao.... ;D ;D ;D The Nikon is for himself. By the way, nice picture. What Aperture/Shutter setting did you use to take this? :)
petetherock Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I don't remember, I use program, getting the shot is important, not so much the bits on aperture and speed. Cheers
rahul Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I have the D80 myself and very happy with it. Prefered it over the 400D for its ergonomics. Canon a bit too plasticy. But its lighter weight and less dense body should be preferable for female users. Image quality wise both cameras would deliver. Weakest link would be the person operating the camera.
varun1624705824 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 for myself), does it matter if one have to pay for a more expensive Nikon lenses that have image stablizer, whereas the Canon has it built-in?, and are Nikon's good these days, I saw the MADE IN Canon and Nikon BOTH don't use built-in image stabilizers. Canon calls it "IS" and it's in their lenses (those designated "IS") and Nikon calls it "VR" and, again, it's in their "VR"-designated lenses. Only Sony (erstwhile Konica/Minolta) and Olympus use built-in stabilization, using sensor-shift instead of lens-shift. Independent studies indicate sensor-shift to be very good but not as good as lens-shift (I'll spare you the tech details about "stops"). For what it's worth, I had a Canon (many - started with 300D, then 20D, then 30D) with a number of IS lenses, including professional-series "L" lenses. Sold the whole lot earlier this month and switched systems completely to Nikon. I now have the D300 and just ONE lens - the 18-200 VR, and am absolutely delighted with my decision - my back loves me. So yes, Nikon is good, no question. The D80 is an EXCELLENT camera and if you're considering buying one for yourself, go right ahead and do so. - V.

One confession to make, the Canon 400D, kit 2 was bought for my daughter, whom I had promised for Christmas, some Christmases back...when things weren't that good then, but Santa's awee bit fat this Christmas.. ;D We have sepnd the few days looking at the Canon400D Kit 1, the Nikon D40, D40X, and the D80 as well as the Sony, the Olympus, and was tempted to buy the Canon $00D Kit 1. The Nikon D80 felt good for a man's hand, what's holding back now is the price & the goodies that comes with it, the D80 promo comes with free tripod plus a bag for $1,888, whereas the Canon 400D Kit 1 is lot cheaper, with 1 tripod, ....plus 1 1MBCF card, 1MB Ultra CF Card... Looks like I am becoming a wee bit inclined towards the NikonD80...at $1,8888, after paying $1,900 for the Canon 400D Kit 2,..Santa's seemed to have lost weight!!!! playing Santa's no fun...I want...I want... >:(
varun1624705824 Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Get the Nikon - it's seriously good. CF cards are CHEAP now. Oh, and the free tripods both companies give out are thoroughly useless. - V.
