zapp1624705742 Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Oh man, this is crazy my PS3 just died on me again while i was watching Ocean's 13. My movie froze when changing layer i think cos it happened yesterday when i was watching spiderman 3. Gah this sucks the QC is really horrid and my warranty is running out in March. Can't imagine how many more times this fella gonna konk out....
SteinigerGE Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Sorry to hear that your PS3 has stopped working again, but I don't agree with you that Sony's QC is terrible. I have had my PS3 on non-stop for the past 3 months Folding, but when I switch to playing a game or watching a Blu-ray, I have no problems at all, nor have I had any since I bought the unit in March. It's too bad that one peson has to get all the bad units. Has anyone else experienced this problems with the same frequency as zapp? If you think Sony's QC is bad, what is your opinion of Microsoft's Xbox 360 QC?
desray Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Factories produce many units per day - although Quality controls will ensure that the set is workable 'at the time of manufacture' - it does not gurantee that the unit will go an energizer bunny forever. Sometimes luck plays a part in it as well. I've owned both consoles, with the more recent sale of my PS3, I still retain my trustworthy X-Box360 (the first-gen w/o HDMI connectivity). Fortunately I did not have any bad experience on both units. Some have attributed the blame to latest firmware upgrades that causes the ROM to be corrupted...all I'm saying is luck play an important factor here.

Can't imagine how many more times this fella gonna konk out.... Another thing...I discovered that sometimes its the Bluray Discs (particularly the more recent releases) are giving many BD Players, not just PS3 but other commercially available BD Players alot of problems as well. I dunno what exactly happen but this is a rather 'common' these days IMO. For instance, I can't get my Die Hard 4.0 BD to play on the latest Sammy BD-P1400 Player and PS3 can - but I've also heard that there are other titles in which PS3 can't handle rather well without going into some 'lock-up' (the problem you've experienced in this context)...so likelihood the latest pressed Bluray Discs may be the problem? Hmmm....
ekardo Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 wah..guys..you are scaring me... I buying PS3 for my bluray collection one...
nawoo Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 no problems with my ps3. i play it non stop all the time.
zapp1624705742 Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 Hmmmm if Bluray discs are causing lens failure...that would be a big problem. Put it this way since i got my PS3 fixed a few mths back, i watched 5 movies on it only. And it died again...so i have really nothing to say
zapp1624705742 Posted December 13, 2007 Author Posted December 13, 2007 60gb bought at local SG launch in March :-X

Can't imagine how many more times this fella gonna konk out.... sad to hear this again zapp. i think the end thing is its still a game console. just that we wanna maximise its blu-ray drive capablities so we watch blu-ray movies with it. but being an awesome device the PS3 is, we are considered the minority few to experince problems wif the PS3. worst ur encounter being the 2nd? :-X
redders Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 When you are the minority..you can call yourself unlucky. Not to talk about PS3 being a "game console", I came across standalone busted itself too.

kmolth Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Sorry to hear about your PS3. Mine was the 60gb version and been running day n night non-stop for 4-5 months folding. My boy leave his Sonic the Hedgehog disc inside after playing etc.... I have been watching movie on it for quite a while too with bluray. Really quite abuse it.... one time even remove the power accidentally without powering down. But my Xbox 360 is bad, have the ring of death twice already. Just sold it to a friend low price. Sometime you got a lemon, like me in Xbox but I understand Xbox 360 is well known for the ring of death. Good luck on your PS3. :)

annapurna Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I think my PS3 died today. I inserted bluray and DVD and the player did not detect anything. The harddiscs is funtioning though as I m able to play downloaded games and movie trailers. I tried on/off many times and it still does not work. Is this a drive problem? Where is Sony Service Center? :(

annapurna Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Just got back after sending my PS3 to Wisma for repair. According to the Customer Service personnel, there has been quite a few cases of the drive failing and it seems to be a design problem. They will replace the drive/laser and I should able to collect it in about 4-5 working days.
Pingu1624705792 Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 And I've been having intermittent sound loss problem since yesterday... Haven't really tested it yet cos of bloody hangover from last night...
TYF Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Guys, we are dealing with Electronics components here and especially with High Tech stuff. There is lots of Luck component playing here and the 'Sway' factor will come and haunt from time to time. Even with those High-End standalone player (of course high price), they don't guarantee no failure. What they gauratee is: when it fail, you are assured that it can be repaired and not leaving you high and dry especially those fly by the night type of company which go busted. Having said that, I crossed my fingers everyday when I powered on my PS3 and hope it don't die on me. ;) Just enjoyed the movies or games when the Machine is doing it's job.
zesurfer Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Another dead PS3 to report. Was watching Hairspray BD and it went kaput. The drive failed to recognize any game or movie disk afterwards. Mine is the 60GB version bought in Mar 07. Sent to Wisma Sat. Only 3 months warranty left. Hope they extend their warranty to 3 years similar to the Xbox 360.
