ruby1624705883 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I am looking for a 50 inch plasma TV. I am looking at either Pioneer PDP508XG and Panasonic TH50PY700. I will be also going for either blueray player or HD-DVD player. I plan to bite the bullet and buy the best plama 50inch plama TV and then use it for 10 years. Advise advise which of the above 2 model (PDP508XG or H50PY700) would be a better choice for usage with blueray player or HD-DVD player? I believe the best price so far for TH50PY700 is $5199. Anyone know what is the best price for PDP508XG (with bottom speaker)?
petetherock Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Welcome bro You have already done the homework (I hope) to narrow down your choices to these two panels. The final decision is Yours. Can you discern the difference to pay the about 2k difference in price? Is 1080p (but no 24 fps) important to you. SEE them in action either at a shop you will buy from - avoid the marauding see and talk only syndrome. As for the best price, lots has been posted here and you can drop by Sim Lim eg Merdeka and ask and see, but weekends are crowded. Good luck PS: if the difference is not discernable, even the PV 70 50" is not bad.
ruby1624705883 Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 Thanks bro. PDP428XG pre-lauch price which was $3961 has dropped to $3499 during Sitex. Pioneer PDP508XG pre-launch price was $6691. I suspect it would drop to about $5999 any time (probably latest by March IT show). I had been eyeing on the Pioneer since its the 8th generation pre-launch due to the good PQ. After Panasonic came out with the full HD version, I got confused since the Pioneer full HD is ridiculusly priced. If unable to decide, I may even wait for the 9th generation Pioneer pre-launch offer (I suspect it would be less than $6k) or 10th generation Panasonic (hopefully 24fps has been fixed in this version) ??? Will not wait any longer than 2008.
HardCORE Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 All are good TVs. I would also add the Samsung PS50P91FH to the list to consider. Its a 50 inch full HD plasma too.
ruby1624705883 Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 Went down to Merdaka today as suggested by petetherock. Thanks man. I found the PQ of pioneer to be better than the panasonic at Merdaka. I was quoted PDP508XG @ $6300 and PDP428XG @ $3800 but the price is negotiable and also the free gift such as the home-theatre can be exchanged. Also, the sales man at Merdaka said the viewing distance of 50" TV should be 4m. My TV is only 3m away. Anyone here can advise whether 3m is to near for 50" TV? I am thinking of trading-in HTZ767DVD and bargaining to $5500 for PDP508XG (with HTZ767DVD traded in).
petetherock Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I sit 2.3m from my 507, no one who has come to my home has complained. Suggest you look up viewing distances: http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancemetric.html Who is this sales person?
ruby1624705883 Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 The card he passed to me say "Jack Lim". I suspect he is a new sales person in Merdeka because the name in the name card was blanko and his name was written in pen.
c7221624705751 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I plan to bite the bullet and buy the best plama 50inch plama TV and then use it for 10 years. bro it's just a TV no need to think so hard lah :) ... and the "best" 50" plasma now is without a doubt, the Pio LX508, (not the 508XG). But it's way way way over priced now, so if you buy, in one yr time the price could drop to 1/3 of it. Can u take that ? ... and in any case, I doubt a TV u bought today will last u 10yrs. Ur income will increase. In a few yrs time u will want a better one (e.g. that 70" Sony XBR8 is really nice. Or that new Pio 60" Kuro III is quite affordable too etc ) because you'll have a bigger budget. So today, IMO I think you should do a reasonable budget, and hunt for the best value and quality display. For that, I think the old Pio 507 is the best buy. Very good display. And a very good price. Although it's not full HD, but trust me, at this size, the diff is very very small. And after a couple of yrs, u won't feel bad writing it off.
Guest Kelang Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Bro, I am in the same situation as yours. I hope that my TV will be able to last me quite long, perhaps 5-10 years down the road. My wife is already complaining that we dun need such a big tv in the hall and I promised that the next tv i am going to buy will stay for at least 5 years. Tough choices eh. I have also narrowed down to your choices including the Samsung ones. In fact, before reading these forums, I didnt even know plasmas with full HD were that cheap. I saw the Full HD plasma from pioneer and I nv looked at plasmas anymore, till this forum. :D
imbest Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 you forgot about Samsung P9. If you're a color person, nothing can beat P9 yet. If you need black badly, Pioneer is obviously the better choice. If you are anti-glare seeker, PY700 is the only option. Best price $3680 b4 further negotiation :D I dun think anything can beat its value for money position right now without Samsung pushing hard for it. not to mention its superb PQ compared to the other 2. However, PQ is a very subjective thing which only your eyes can decide :D

Guest jonlee Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 I'm getting this week too... ;) just back from Bintan, most probably getting P9 this week lor. see brother jonlee wanna get together or not. main user is not me :( but my girlgirl.....
Gaolow Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Sorry if this question is mainly plain newbies. I it adviseable to get plasma if your content most of the time is TV program? Whetehr the burn-in efect had already improve over the years? How about playing game, like PS3 and WII, will there any concern about the burn in effect?
petetherock Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Hi bro plasma performs well for SD TV An LCD might suit your other gaming needs better. Burn in is less, but still exists, so figure out the ratio of games to TV / movies, if the former is pre-dominant, an LCD might serve you better, esp in a brightly lit room. Cheers Sorry if this question is mainly plain newbies. I it adviseable to get plasma if your content most of the time is TV program? Whetehr the burn-in efect had already improve over the years? ming1881 Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Agree with Pete. Our viewing distance is 2.8m and we find it just right with the 50" Plasma. I sit 2.3m from my 507, no one who has come to my home has complained.
petetherock Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 So bro what did you buy? The sooner you get your set, the quicker you enjoy the fun of a medium size tv. A 50" can reproduce a good cinema effect quite nicely. Don't be NATO.... BTW someone in the sales section is looking for the HITB, so you can sell the free Pioneer one to him If you cannot find someone to deal with, ask for KK Yeo in Merdeka. The card he passed to me say "Jack Lim". I suspect he is a new sales person in Merdeka because the name in the name card was blanko and his name was written in pen.

If you are anti-glare seeker, PY700 is the only option. I prefer the black. The star wars scene would look more fantastic on pioneer.

BTW someone in the sales section is looking for the HITB, so you can sell the free Pioneer one to him If you cannot find someone to deal with, ask for KK Yeo in Merdeka. The sales guy at Merdeka told me he can match the cheapest offer I can find. Lee Meng Trading quote me $6175 without any bargaining for PDP508XG. I am going to call up Hong Liang & Parisilk to get their quotes. If I am not able to sell my free HITB (HTZ767DVD - retail price $849) at merdeka, I may try to negotiate to replace it with a blue-ray player or Pioneer DV-LX50 (retail price $1399).
ruby1624705883 Posted December 10, 2007 Author Posted December 10, 2007 Agree with Pete. Our viewing distance is 2.8m and we find it just right with the 50" Plasma. Thanks. My viewing distance is 3m which will allow me to get 50"
roaringflamer Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 is 3m truely sufficient for the 50" tv? cause i donno i find that at 3.5m the 42" is a more comfortable choice? any opinions here broS? cause im considering the pv70 this week and donno whether to get 42 or 50 yup
imbest Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 it is a very subjective topic. some people just find it too small to have 42" at the distance of 3-4m. Some people find it just nice. Nobody can decide for you except yourself :)
roaringflamer Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 haha damm i'll need to audition then >.<
imbest Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 to me, the bigger the better, but to a certain extend. I find watching 100" projected image is just nice for movies :D But projector requires light controlled room. In fact I would prefer to get a 63" plasma if i can afford it, my viewing distance is 4m ;) U know, when you get to see everything big in details, you tend to be more picky.....I can see how ugly when Fan Wong has pimples on her face, lol! it's a totally different experience..... but well, when i was watching heroes on my 12" XGA thinkpad, it's also very shoik. Dun be too overwhelmed by the hardware, sometimes, those so called "purist" or AV siao are just losing their mind. It's the media content matters, not the hardware. Be more practical, and you will be contented easily :D and be happier....

The "SDE" is more obvious on TVs with lower resolution ("HD-ready" vs "Full HD"). An advantage of the full HD sets is that the pixels are a lot smaller so you can sit a lot closer to the TV. Also, Full HD TVs tend to have less moire. For a Full HD 50 inch, you probably cannot see the pixel structure unless you sit < 1m from the TV.
