imbest Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 do post your brand/models, maybe we shall use it as a reference :D do you guys think it's worth to get the 5 years warranty? be it AIG or SAFETY5..... I got a shock when Harvey Norman told me their AIG coverage is not 100% of the value worth but rather, similar specs only nia.....anybody claimed from them b4?
wind30 Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 how much does the insurance cost? Seriously I don't think it is worth it. I am just waiting for my 3 year old 480P hitachi plasma to go kaput but it is still going strong even after a LOT of abuse, like drama serials, 360 gaming, etc. After 3 years, I am itching to get an upgrade as all the panels looks so cheap. Example, 3 years back, my 480p plasma cost $4.2k and now a 1080P LCD cost like $2k....
tsammyc Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 When I heard "kapok", I envisioned a TV exploding in a could of white dust (kapok) Depends on brand. If you buy a Philips, Grundig or Thomson TV, then definitely get 5-yr warranty... With most Japanese brands, no need. After 15 years, I finally gave my Sony XBR to the karang guni man.
Guest jonlee Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 based on today's improvement on flat panel, especially to people who frequent this website... a lot of time, we are actually praying for our TV to kaput so that we have a valid reason to buy a newer, better, bigger and yet cheaper TV!

kzone Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 When I heard "kapok", I envisioned a TV exploding in a could of white dust (kapok) That happened to me only once, prob abt 20 years ago though... amazing thig was there was still pic on the screen after the bang & white smoke coming out fm the back.. only after I turned it off that it cant be turned on again... cant recall the brand... imbest, if u're so concerned abt the tv breaking down, y not just get the warranty so ur mind can relax.. of cos they can only offer u similar specs, otherwise ur one time purchase entitles u to a free upgrade of the latest specs for that amt of $$ can buy every 5 years at least... imagine those who bought the 42" plasma when it was close to $20K claiming a 60" full HD panel under the warranty now when their 42" breaks down...
imbest Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 well, specs can be the same but requirements will never be the same, if you do not move forward, you're going backwards. At the point of warranty claim, you may not really get what your claim worth....that's why it doesn't make much difference if you were to get the extended warranty. for example. this guy paid a total of $6.5K for everything 4 years ago, and now, he only get back $2K worth (highest retail price stated in the big stores) of panel, which is similar specs. If he were to upgrade to a 50" full HD Plasma like P9 now, the retail price is $5999, so he has to top up another $4K. Put this this way, if he were to go out and grab a P9 now by cash, he dun even need to spend $4K. If didn't even pay that $600-700 extra for the extended warranty, he could simply use that to fund the new panel. See the picture? HN said BD warranty is bullsh*t, i think it's the other way.....at least BD promised what they forecast, HN simply anyhow hantam.....unless all these extended warranty comes free with with the TV, at good price too, I feel that customers are always at the losing end.....
cracker Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 No experience of kapuk yet...but my "breakdown" experience is as followed : toshiba 34" CRT TV..spoilt within 10 min after delivery back in 2002 !!!!... Image gets darker as the min goes by. Replacement was a 43" RPTV...finally died on me this yr which makes it abt 5 yrs old. Had a Sony 29" TV bought in 1995.....color was getting abit washed out.from 2005 onward..gave away in 2006.
viv4080 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 When I bought my Panny last year, I agreed to pay about $400 for the 4th & 5th year warranty. Looking at how fast prices are dropping, may not be really worth it. I think, 3 years is good enough. After 3 years, the cost of a set of similar specs. would cost maybe 50% less. Price of TH-42PV60H - $3099 (Oct 2006) Price of TH-42PV70H - $2200 (Nov 2007) - 29% drop Price in 2008 - $1500??
DanDon Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Had a Sony 29" CRT TV ten yrs ago. Broke down after usage of 3 yrs due to cold soldering. Had it repaired and gave it to my sister. About 2 yrs ago, the colour started to fade. Now I'm still holding on to my 8 yrs old Toshiba 43" RPTV (made in japan) waiting for it to breakdown. My brother bought a 2nd generation of this 43" RPTV (made in china) and brokedown within a yr. Afterall, made in ??? still the best. ;D
imbest Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 usually japanese made TV are pretty solid, some Malaysia made Sony are solid too. How about made in korea plasma? any experience of it breaking down right after the warranty period?
kzone Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 for example. this guy paid a total of $6.5K for everything 4 years ago, and now, he only get back $2K worth (highest retail price stated in the big stores) of panel, which is similar specs. Bro, the warranty is against the product & that product specs dont change... its the same for all products.. maybe u shud look for an insurance policy (if there is one) instead of warranty if u insist on claiming against value.. if not, just forget abt all these extended warranty and pay cash to the lowest priced seller..
howk798 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I had a Toshiba 32" wide screen CRT MIJ which I used for 7 yrs without any failure, due to backside itchy upgrade to RPTV and when I tried to used it again after letting it to rest for more than a yr and it became 'kapok' ??? I upgrade to a Samsung 43" RPTV which I got together with safety 5 from BD and within the 5 yr got it repair at least 4 times and luckily thats free but finally it just broke down before it reaches its 6th yr. Also I had a GOLDSTAR 29" in my bedroom and its going to retire soon ( starts to have problems ) after 11 yr also without any failure through out its life except for being a little temperamental as it will just switch off and then on again at its own will once in a blue moon.
