louco73 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 I'm wandering around today at SITEX and the nice chap working around the pile of Samsung Blu-Ray machines explains the following: Player = $699 - free Monster HDMI cable which I think was around $150 but we all know it's probably worth about $40 :). - 3 free blu-ray movies (Fantastic Four, X-Men, can't remember :) ) $180 (they had $210, but I think Blu-Ray in SG are ~$60, right?) - $150 worth of Harvey Norman combo vouchers which have to be used for different specific things like furniture, bedding, dining, etc. - $100 Robinsons voucher (said I would get it if I bought right now, but would have to get it from the agent.) By my calculation I get a blu-ray player for $89 if I use full value. If I assume the HDMI cable is worth about $40, the movies worth $180, and I would probably only use $100 of value from the combo vouchers then it works out to be $279. Still not too bad. I'm still reading the AVS 73 page monster thread, and there are some issues, but $279, hmm. The LG combo player is $12xx for pre-launch orders and $15xx otherwise. Anyone care to comment?
petetherock Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Bro Its a fine deal if you are not afflicted by those issues. I would have considered it if I didn't want HD DVD and had a HDMI amp Cheers
Phil1624705739 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Resistance is futile!! No thanks to Jeff, of course. He got one too. Phil
petetherock Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Phil is this region free for SD? Resistance is futile!! No thanks to Jeff, of course. He got one too. Phil
Phil1624705739 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 So far so good, no major issue detected yet. 1. 1080p24 works perfectly fine with my TW1K. 2. Load Cars but slower than PS3. 3. Run silent and cool. Biggest caveat for me? It's not DVD regional code free... Phil
tsammyc Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Biggest caveat for me? It's not DVD regional code free... Yuks! Surely there is a hack!. Very disapoointed at this because of the implications on the 5000. I can see Jeff turned on by the DTS-HD Master Audio display ;D

I can see Jeff turned on by the DTS-HD Master Audio display ;D You bet! I'm kinda excited to see those, too. But maybe letting this go if the dual formats have all the capabilities I need. An no.. BD-J v1.1 is not one of them. Phil
louco73 Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 Well I read through some of the latest pages on AVS and decided that it might be worth getting, despite some obvious problems. I'm relying on Samsung getting their act together with a firmware update :). What was the final deal you guys got?
Phil1624705739 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 What was the final deal you guys got? Same... Phil
htfreak Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Ahh.. I see that my young padawan has let the cat out of the bag. ;D Save me having to post my pics. I guess by the end of the show, we may have a few more brudders giving in to the temptation. I know Sammy of Sound Decisions made his way down to Sitex the moment I texted him on this offer. Audio is also currently there with his son picking up one unit as well. Other candidates might include Jason, Oliver, Muscular27 and maybe Gaolow as well. Looks like this DTS HD MA thing is very infectious indeed. Hahahahahahahaha...
louco73 Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 Oh what to do, watch my first HD soccer match or my first HD movie ;D
htfreak Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Actually you do have the chance to use up one of those $10 HN vouchers and purchase the Draco settop for $289 only. Not a bad deal since they bundle the antennae in as well.
c7221624705751 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Biggest caveat for me? It's not DVD regional code free... huh ?! my src told me strongly it will be. let me check. btw for those who bought, what exactly are the HN vouchers ? I'm buying something from HN, so I may actually find some use of it.
htfreak Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 huh ?! my src told me strongly it will be. let me check. According to the store manager, they were only informed about the no region free by Samsung yesterday by SMS. Hence, your source was probably under the impression that it will be code free. I pity those who pre-ordered the player at $799 only to find out that it is being sold at $699 at Sitex with the extra HDMI cable thrown in. Quite unethical of HN to do that, I'm hoping they do the decent thing and refund the extra $100.
Phil1624705739 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Did some preliminary comparisons with PS3 on HBR SQ. I'm sure it sounds better using external decoding based on the above Dolby demo disc. There is a lot more punch and body especially for the Sahara TrueHD clip which used to sound so-so via PS3. That said, my set hung on me twice already. Once in the menu and another time loading Fantastic 4. Intermittent problem though. As for DTS-HD, there's simply no comparison as the console is unable to decode this format as of the moment. Phil

Lets put it this way, there must be a reason why they are slashing price during Sitex. One possibility is the pre-order was not very popular. Phil
htfreak Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 If they do that, then I will bring it back on Monday and claim that Bitstream did not work and get a refund lor. Two can play that game. ;D As for the pre-order, I never expected it to be successful as there is just not enough education on either format to the masses. However, never expected to get a HD player for a low price of $599 1 year into its format introduction. Let's hope the next firmware for this player fixes all the kinks so that Pioneer will get stuck with a shit load of LX70a. >:(

Moreover, the time and transportation just for a fraction of the sum you paid. Education is one thing but I believe the main reason is almost everyone else is satisfied with DVD PQ. Why pay more especially when there is an abundant supply of dirt-cheap Chinese imports. Phil

My sincere thanks to Jeff for calling me on my this Saturday afternoon to catch this deal, quench my desire of getting the Pioneer LX70 or 80.
