If your source is not a tube-based CDP, U might want to look at the Citypulse Audio SA-77 Integrated Amplifier since U like "Warmish" sound. ;) It's just a bit higher than your budget. ;D

pcking1624705747 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Hi Wacom, just want to share something with U & the rest which I recently found out. As I am driving my ALR/Jordan Entry Si with my Shanling MC-3 of only 3 watts/c, same as U I find that there is not enough juice to drive the Si to louder volumes while still maintaining the details. Since the Si r small & light enough, I brought my pair of Si to my friend's place. He is using the Jolida JD202A to drive his Usher Be-718. To our surprise, despite the smaller volume & driver size of the Si, it needs quite a lot of power to drive ! With the exact same setup & CD track being played, we actually need to turn the volume knob on the int. amp even higher to drive the Si to the same loudness level as his Ushers. Therefore I have a feeling the Si will only show their full potential if U drive them with at least 40 watts/c or higher amp.

Want to share as well, I found that qed silver anniversary xt match well, compare to belden 1313a or stock jordan cable. It sounds more dynamic, better sounstage, detail but not analytical. Try it, qed is cheap.
Spunky Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 mmm, probably 50W can do the job. I've not been shopping for an amp for a long time. but during those days when I was still very BIG on What HiFi? and listened to a few 'budget' brit and japanese amps, I found that brit amps tended to sound more effortless than most jap amps. therefore, it's diff to say whether 50W is enough or not!

Well this is just opinion based on entry si specs. Stated inside the spec, that recommended power is 25W minimum. Cheers!

It's actually a misconception that smaller speakers need lesser power to drive, and larger speakers need very beefy amps. However the opposite appears to be true. A lot of bookshelf speakers (usually ~86dB/W/m sensitivity) actually need a lot of power compared to floorstanders (typically > 90dB/W/m). If you think about it, smaller speakers have smaller drivers, and these need to work harder to produce the same sound level compared to larger speakers with larger drivers. Regards CK
pcking1624705747 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Hi ckng, I agree with what U have said but since both the speakers in comparison here r both rated at 87dB/W/m, & the Be-718 with a bigger driver of 7", I would presume that it will take more power to drive this driver as compared to the smaller 4" drive of the Si. Furthermore many sites have commented that the Be-718 r hard to drive & seems to have 84 to 85 dB/W/m instaed of the rated 87. Thus I was shocked to find out that the Si r even harder to drive. Spunky Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 why not bear with it for the time being? Somehow I feel that the Si needs a much better amp to bring the best out of it. Not just an increase in power rating. Recently I saw a pr of flyingmole available which I thought was quite OK when driving the Usher X-series bkshelf spks. But I think u'll still need a preamp for it to sound good.
kuryakin Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Try the Rotel RA series. Budget may even get them new. Starting from 40W. More than sufficient for your needs. No need to mess with tubes as they are SS.

Hi, Very interesting indeed. Maybe the 7" driver which covers a larger frequency range sounds "fuller" so does not tempt you to turn up the volume more? :p Regards CK
