Heng ah.... just pumped full tank last night... May see US$100 per barrel this week!

Likewise -- meaning I just topped up yesterday evening.  And the thing is, usually I wait until the warning light comes on, since I can usually drive another full day without the tank running dry, but this time there was still probably a day or two more before that would happen, yet my wife suggested we go top up anyway instead of having to do it after work later this week -- good thing she did...

Actually, I wonder if the price is true or is it the result of speculation....

Anyway, drivers are screwed, since using the car (petrol and ERP charges) have both gone up many times this year...

My wildest fantasy, is to somehow persuade all drivers not to drive for a year, and use public transport exclusively.

In that way, car population will hopefully slow, less taxes collected since lower car sales, less fees collected, since no-one driving, less profits for petrol companies, since lesser need to top up, and we can all follow the advice - use public transport.

Since our public transport is always being touted as the best, let's all put it to the test. Then we will see if indeed the public transport system is as good as it is always being praised...

Roads are jammed, public buses and trains are packed to the brim....... even if all the drivers use public transport, the buses and trains will not be able to cope with this sudden influx of added load. Even PM Lee said more can be done to improve public transport redently

Our public transport is indeed one of the few better ones in the world. However, the main crux of the problem is that Singapore's demand in domestic transportation far exceeds the transportation infrastructure growth rate.

That means more people need to use the same buses/trains that do not arrive regularly or freqently enough. Same goes for cars too.

Yes, Jag.I agree with you. But at least, that would put some pressure on those in authority to solve the problem, and at the same time have to balance keeping the cost affordable for the man in the street.

If we wanted to talk about lost productivity from sitting in traffic, let's see how the problem is resolved when it is not due to the number of cars on the road, but the operational efficiency of the transport companies.

To this day, I fail to understand the reasons for evening ERP.

Imagine - to get in to CBD before any ERP starts to operate usually means getting past the gantries before 7.30am, and to leave after evening ERP starts is usually after 7 or 8pm. That's a good 11-12 hour work-day. How can this gel with promoting family togetherness? Many would be having dinner at around 9pm!

So, the ERP charges are low enough for the typical driver to suck it up and pay, just to get home. JUST TO GET HOME.

Those who don't want to pay, will delay going home. Many may also do so, the end-result being that the jam is just SHIFTED TO A LATER HOUR.

So, is the solution to impose more and heavier fees? The recent increase in ERP charges seemed to have been conveniently timed with the holiday this week, so many may have taken leave and that also means lower traffic. So the improvement in travelling speed is taken as an indication of the success of increasing fees.

The govt is just giving what the ppl ask for........PAY AND PAY..... PAY AND PAY........  ;D

That is an interesting option, but unfortunately even without all the car drivers cramming the trains, the trains are already sardine packed.

Anyway, the only people who praise the public transport system are the people who never take the public transport system.  :P :P

A few mths back..........

We all know (esp mornings) , our mrt is jam packed sardines.....

Yet, the fare price went up.....

This has been ALWAYS THE CASE ..........

But i know when it'll definately stop for me.....

All the way to my grave :'(

On the 2nd thought............

We may  even die  WITHOUT A GRAVE.........

Even in death, we r deprived.........

Sad man....

Wow ! this seems a very gd reason perhaps to RETIRE & DIE somewhere else!

I'm not sure that I want to retire to some other place...

After all, if I work here and have contributed to the economy, then I should look to collect any (little) handout from those in power...

Or only take it during stage-managed events when a train or bus is specially kept clear just for them...

Im truly happy for the 66.6% who BLINDLY voted in this current government. Not that the opposition is any good or can be an alternative govt, but more opposition will keep the ruling party on their toes. Any increases will be met with fiery debate. The GST & minister pay increase got any MP oppose boh? The peasants lan-lan have to accept done deal. No wonder FTs views us as weaklings.

How does it help to pump full tank now ? You will not avoid higher fuel cost after this tank dries up.

This is just typical Singaporean Kiasu mentality......can save a few cents  die die also sure Queue up...very soon singapore will have Stampede like in China Supermarket :-[

there are many ways one can save..if petrol prices is too high...even though I love V power very much ..I downgraded to 98 Ron ...if go up further  I will pump 95 Ron.on Singapore roads..V power or 95 Ron...No difference...cannot speed  n Jam everywhere...KPE speed limit 70 km/hr..otherwise smile u are on Candid Digital camera ! 8)

Orchard Road ERP ?...well I hardly go Orchard Road  in the first place especially weekends..If I have to go ...I will take the MRT...enjoy the ride...read a book or newspaper(If u drive...u cannot read )...weekends I ride a Racer Bike to the beach...good exercise for an OLD MAN like me .

many who complain that they are poorer than me are driving Brand new Posh BMW n Mercedes...I am driving a 1984 lemon ...no bank loans needed...the car costs me $15 K only .

Vieri, to be honest, I think the PAP is doing a good job, so I don't begrudge their pay. We all want pay increases, so even though in the purest form of standing for office, that it should be voluntary and with self-sacrifice for the good of their fellow coutry-people, I am fine with it.

I don't really agree that if one has a high pay currently, then no increases should be given. Compared to those who are taking home about S$1k a month, he/she may begrudge those who take home S$3k per month, and that no increase is needed for those in that income group.

Fact is, there is either no solution to heavy traffic. Or at least there isn't one that can be cheaply implemented, or without a significant loss of income to the economy. To a simpleton like me, the obvious solution is to ban new cars from being added to the roads, but this will cause the coffers to be short of money, as well as cause unhappiness to the population, since car ownership is still an aspiration for many.

So the 'solution' is to charge more. My question is if it really helps. It's just pushing the problem to a later time period, and then being able to report to their masters that the 'crucial' peak hour problem has been solved. Has anyone checked the traffic condition after the peak hours? How about a report on that???

Why built expressways in the 1st place when u discourage people from using them?

Its main purpose's to EASE TRAFFIC IN MINOR ROADS.......

Instead , ERP gantrys after gantrys were built ,  forever increasing ERP rates on expressways....

To encourage motorist to use alternative minor roads?

Seems bloody ironic , makes no sense , really!

Juz maybe, its all an excuse to squeese the juices out of all of u, really >:(

Traffic Jams in Singapore is considered nothing !

Try Bangkok , Beijing , Tokyo , Jakarta or even KL ..traffic Jam n  air pollution is the biggest problem that China is still trying to tackle for Beijing 2008

In Japan , The Subway is the major form of transport for all the workers ...alot of them are Top management pple...plus they work so late..some still sleep at subway stations n go to work the next day ! The Japanese can also Question ...WHY  sell cars when you don't drive ??? ;D...Hongkong Subway is sardine packed even in Off peak hours !

I used to stay  in Toa Payoh...CTE is forever Jammed ...so I moved to the EAST ...ECP is great !

orchard Road ERP don't affect me...I finish work about 8 +pm ...entry is free after that...I don't hang around Orchard ...if I have to Go ...I know wat I want ...GO...BUY ...PAY ....GO HOME !  In fact alot of the thing you can buy at your own estate Shopping Mall...wat so great about ORCHARD ROAD ??....I don't have the luxury of  leaving office at 5pm.. HOW I WISH ! 8)

HK packed meh? I feel their mtr very good leh. not as packed. This is around 10am when I took their train along the hk island line. I feel one reason why they not pack is their trains come at 2-3 mins frequency no matter peak or not peak.

Now i dun drive into town area liao. cos finding parking lots and traffic jams r a major headache for me. So i now opt to drive to nearest housing estate that near town and park there. especially on sunday since it is free parking and take train in. like drive to TPY and take train to orchard. 3 stations away only. 6 mins. easy.
