I was in a coffeeshop...ordered a can of Coke....$1.30...I gave the coffee boy a $1 coin , a 10 cents coin n 4 X 5 cents coins...KNN...the coffee boy refused to accept the four 5 cents coins..he said instructions from the Boss...told him to ask the boss come n see me...."sorie BOSS only come at nite ! :'(

Is it illegal  not accepting 5 cents coins since it is legal tender ??

not as if I paid all in 5 cents coins....$1.30 I only paid FOUR 5 cents coins...

Which  Government department can I complain to just in case the coffeeshop BOSS gets punchy ::)..next time I go at nite...ask for the boss n pay him 26 X 5 cents coins ;D

if i am not wrong, mas have chosen not to demonetise the 5-cent coin, meaning it is legal tender in singapore. for shopkeepers that refuse to accept 5-cent coins as part of the payment for goods or services, here is the currency act (chapter 69) ;D

Coins issued by the Authority, if the coins have not been illegally dealt with, shall be legal tender up to their face value in Singapore as follows:

© in the case of coins of a denomination lower than 50 cents — for the payment of an amount not exceeding $2

If retailers do not wish to accept a particular denomination of currency notes or coins, they should display notices prominently at their premises. This is stated in the Currency Act.

This is a more common issue in Singapore when you think about it:

Taxi drivers refusing S$50 notes, anyone?

Not possible to pay bus fare with notes?

Legal Tender? I don't think so.

I've been here for 4 years and I got my first $20 note the other day. Circulating more $20 notes would help out the taxi driver problem.
