imbest Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 This is just a general question, as I'm in the midst of getting a not so new model Plasma (Samsung P5H) for temp use. Downloaded the manual from Samsung UK website but realized it never mentioned about 720p/1080i settings for HDMI but only for component. Is it normal? For those who have a 2-3 years old Plasma/LCD, do you have an option for the source of your HDMI? or it actually auto-detect it? Would your TV turn on/off overscan while using HDMI? In case you're interested, this was the manual I was referring to: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200511/20051108102443593_BN68-00973A-01Eng_1104_book.pdf I did some search, seems like HDMI overscan issue only appear in those DVI->HDMI through PC/Mac. Not sure if it's true.....Still dunno if I shall pull handbrake first hehe....SITEX is very near the corner liao..... thanks in advance :D

This TV will not support turning off overscan. Only the newer full HD plasmas/LCDs have that option. Overscan will not really bother you, as it is not obvious unless you have a PC/Mac desktop where you can see the edges being cut off.
imbest Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 this one have "PC Mode" to cut off the overscan lah, solely for 1360 WXGA input only. Actually I went to HN MW again lol! I realized quite a few TV are having serious overscan problem even on the HD5, they should be using component input. It's very obvious that pictures are being cut off :( bro Hardcore, you meant only full HD panels, and the recent models can disable this overscan function? Thanks for answering the HDMI question :D
Knight_Rider Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Hmmm why dun wait for coming SITEX and get a Pio 427 at bargain price?

Thanks for answering the HDMI question :D Ah yes, you're right. In the non full HD panels, with some of them its possible to get no overscan using the analog PC/VGA input, or if you are lucky and the TV has a DVI input, then using that. And yes, as far as I know only the full HD panels can disable overscan for the HDMI/component 1080i/p modes.
imbest Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 but then the PC Mode is strictly for VGA input only nia. Do you think I can actually use a HDMI<->VGA cable to get it work? er...dunno got such thing or not also haha.....and usually people do it the other way instead hehe.... Just happen to see Ch8 迷离夜...waliew....the borders damn jialat without overscan lol!
imbest Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Just read the manuals of both Q91 and this P5H. Q91 has this description: Just Scan: Use this function to see the full image without any truncation when HDMI(720p/1080i) signals are input. P5H has this description: ◆ Screen enlargement operates only in TV/Video/S-Video input modes. ◆ PC/HDMI modes prevent the screen enlargement function. Seems like Samsung has already catered the overscan issue 2 years back hehe..... Bro Hardcore, is your PY700 able to disable overscan for Component input too?

Will be useful for the Q91 but unfortunately still cannot get 1:1 pixel mapping over HDMI/component because the native resolution is WXGA. Yup the PY700 can disable overscan for component, if the signal is 1080i.
imbest Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Q91 50" all sold out liao....or rather, Samsung didn't stock up much, perhaps less than 10 sets islandwide. No display ever since it was launched :( As I have limited 1080p source, can't maximize the power of 1080p....so dun need 1:1 lah, downscaled from 1080i will give more details compared to 720p already hehe.....
imbest Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 suddenly I thought of the 1080p/24 thingy again. If it's 1080i, what there be any issue?
dmateo Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 just need to ensure your TV de-interlacing is good and you're all set.
imbest Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 actually some of the brothers here said can see jitter, some said can't. just wondering which film is that obvious to see the jitter....and motion blur. I thought only some highend TV like Sony's Bravia X and some SXRD that comes with DMF v2.5 has the de-interlacing mechanism built in that convert everything to 1080p? most TV will still show 1080i right?
tsammyc Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I have a SXRD with DMF v2.5. Its only so-so in deinterlacing and scaling 480i. I prefer to feed it 1080p/60 (it doesnt take 1080p/24) through an Oppo or PS3. It does a good job though on deinterlacing 1080i from both Starhub and MioTV fed into its HDMI input.
imbest Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 brother tsammyc, does PS3 or other bluray player able to force the 1080p/24 source properly to 1080p/60? is it the same 3:2 pull down method? I am still wondering if 1080p/24 shall be a concern.....but then, I got no such movie/media to test :(
tsammyc Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 My PS3 defaults to 1080p/60 with my projector from Blu-Ray 1080p/24 content, but PS3 can be forced to output 1080p/24. PS3 outputs 1080p/60 to my SXRD and it looks good. As I mentioned before SXRD cannot accept 1080p/24. I know that Doggie and company love 1080p/24, but frankly I find the smooth 1080p/24 panning makes the scene painful to my eyes to watch and blur at the same time. I actually prefer the jitter strobe effect of 1080p/60. I guess to each their own....
imbest Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 wah, this one must really go down somewhere to see see look look liao haha....... which movie is more obvious?
tsammyc Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I was just watching Layer Cake on Blu-Ray (lousy movie) yesterday, which has a lot of panning in the beginning.
imbest Posted November 3, 2007 Author Posted November 3, 2007 would those ripped BR/HD-DVD carrying the same 24fps signal? eg, MKV. Coz I'm thinking of downloading a sample (probably 15mins only) and use it to test it with a media box with HDMI output.
imbest Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 hey guys, just wondering where got sell VGA->HDMI cable at good price? I dun really need very long type.
