naglfar Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 hello,' this may be a stupid question to ask. new in PJ and intends to get one. can normal tv programs be play on the PJ. thanks hoon\ :) :) :) Of course..
imbest Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 why do you want to do that? coz of the screen size? I am doing that and my zharboh has been complaining non-stop. Now I'm forced to grab a plasma TV when the next promotion is up :-[ besides the dark room/low ambient light "pre-requisite", the low PQ from the SD is damn jialat for certain channels. Those newer sources shooted by the newer equipments may not have low PQ issue on PJ. Furthermore, projector has no overscan feature (please enlighten me if there is any projector that comes with overscan feature) therefore you will notice some noise at the borders for some low resolution sources, it's quite obvoius, especially for CNN, CNBC & TVBJ. the projector I'm using is Sanyo Z3, screen size is 100", this is the smallest size once I moved it out from my TV room to the living room, can't get a smaller one due to the distance between the wall and the Z3, yes my screen is my bare wall. lol! My projector has a few settings, for 4:3 it's between Normal and Normal Through. Normal will fill up the screen leaving 2 bars at the side, normal through will display at the source native resolutions, which is the best settings for SD TV, but you will have a huge letter box around it. Dun say NPNT lah okay? Let me show you the differences, pictures taken by my U600, not very clear but enough for you to see a difference..... 720p movie full screen 16:9 Starhub TV Guide, 16:9, Full Starhub TV Guide, 4:3, Normal Starhub Preview Channel, 4:3, Normal Through Ch8, 4:3 Normal Through (my favorite Michelle Chia hehe...) Ch5, 4:3, Normal Through Discovery Channel, 4:3 Normal Through StarWorld, 4:3 Normal Through VV Ch 55, 4:3 Normal Through CNN, 4:3 Normal Through (notice the top layer of noise? It's always there)

imbest Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 1.The wall is not flat, always, thanks to HDB (i dunno if you're staying in much better quality estate with damn flat wall :D), therefore for super fine text, it will not be clear, eg viewing your computer screen, you will never get it focused 100% but only some part of the screen. However, for TV or movie viewing, you can't see this problem. You can also get a standalone TV box PC with TV tuner etc etc to get TV signal for your projector too. There are many ways....... 2.I am using hubstation and the source is send to my Z3 via component cables. This is the tricky part. As projector is placed at the same size of your seating position, you will have messy wires (especially the components) across your living room, this is damn disgusting lol! Luckily I have TV point for both sides of my living rooms, so my hubstation is on my left side and projector on the right side. All the cables are running behind the 3-seater sofa and it is leaning against the wall. This has some other interesting disadvantages, I have to point the hubstation control at a special angle to get it work. As you know InfraRed does reflect, you can also point to your glossy tiles (I'm sorry if you're using parquet) and get it work too! :D The last thing is the sound. I am currently using a USB powered speakers with the hubstation, so the speakers is placed under the sofa hahaha! The ideal case will be getting a wireless HDMI adapter and you can get all these resolved. I am still waiting for Philips and Asus to come out the UWB device, since early this year. Think they are still having issue on the 1080p transmission :( As I have yet to plan out my audio set up, anything that can create decent sound will do, that's why I ended up with the $10+ USB speakers hehe.... Oh yah, another thing is, to reduce the blocking of image, it's better to place your projector as high as possible and shift the image downwards. My Z3 has lens shift function so it's perfect for me to place it at the side, no keystone required, no distortion of image :D Now I'm trying to look for a good shelf with the right height to serve this purpose....but may give up this idea as my temp Plasma should be in by then hehe... Are you going to view it during daytime too? It is impossible unless you have a super high gain screen. I am thinking of giving Planar a visit to find out how much they want to charge me for a 100" Xscreen. After 1 month+ of viewing TV in this way, I think it's better to go for Plasma still heee........Projector really needs a dark room to work best.
blackburn Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 thanks imbest for your reply, I like the idea of the wall as the screen. question : 1. any thing i need to take note if i use the wall as screen. 2. how you get the tv signals. thanks check out miotv. it gives you the connectivities and it is economical enough ;)
hoon33 Posted October 28, 2007 Author Posted October 28, 2007 hello imbest, thank you for the literature. so you are shifting your z3 to the living room and is getting plasma tv. so are you giving up PJ?, sorry to ask sensitive question . i intend to use PJ and LCD TV . PJ to see dvd and TV good movies. for family memebers that watch the serials at 9pm, to use LCD TV. I intend to put the PJ next to my arm chair and not on the ceiling. question 1. should i have a rack near the arm chair with the PJ, dvd player and amp . this way i run the 5.1 speaker cables to the speakers under the carpert. or 2. should i have the dvd player , amp at the side of the wall screen and run the video cables to the PJ near my arm chair which option would you suggest or is there a better method. thanks hoon33

There is no better method. Just use the better method that suits your decor & wallet. In addition to your previous ?, U can also use a DVD Recorder as a TV tuner & connect it to your PJ. (I am doing this & I do not have any TVs in my house) ;D
imbest Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 bro hon33, The Z3 is already happily risiding at the living room until the new Plasma is in. Giving up on Projector? NO NO NO! It's awesome for watching movie but definately not good enough for low resolution local broadcast. Why Plasma? Coz LCD TV (which is similar to LCD projector) really produce low PQ for the local broadcast. As I said earlier, if the recording was done by the newer equipments, it's still alright provided you're viewing them at native resolutions, for my case it's the option Normal Through (575i but I think Starhub is feeding 576i). Otherwise, the PQ is damn jialat one lor. Nevertheless, PQ is yet another subjective thingy. If you have carpet to cover the wires, it doesn't matter actually. I would prefer Option 2 as you can access the devices via remote controls easily. If you're not mounting your projector, it's better to get a tall rack to house the projector, or simply get a tall cabinet and place the projector on top, this is just to reduce the blocking of projected image lor, u know, the beam is harmful to the eyes too if it's direct contact. Which projector are you getting/own now? I dunno if other brands are like Sanyo having the lens shift function. Another thing you need to consider is the screen size. As you're going to place a TV near the same wall, I do not know if you still have enough space for your screen (even if it's just the bare wall). I can't have both my new Plasma and Projector in my living room at the same time, once my Plasma is in, I will move my projector back to my AV room :D
whowillbe Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 It is not that projector is not good enough for SDTV signals. Rather it is because due to large projected image, all the flaws due to source will become very visible.
hoon33 Posted October 28, 2007 Author Posted October 28, 2007 hello all brothers and imbest, thank you for the replies. due to budget concerns, most of my equipment is 2nd hand intend to get the epson tw600. 2 years old with no warranty. selling at $1,300-00. is this a good buy ? regarding tv and PJ on the same side of the wall. i tried to buy a 5 room hdb flat with 4 rooms but the master room is small. therefore just bought a 5 room hdb flat with 3 bedrooms, the hall is big. will try PJ, tv watching and hifi listening in the hall. if does not work out, may move the hifi to the master bed room. regarding the PJ, please advise me $1,300 for 2nd hand is good buy or not. thanks alot friends with same hobby.
kzone Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 will try PJ, tv watching and hifi listening in the hall. I'm doing dat at the moment & with the TW600 u r targetting.... It cost slightly over 2.5k abt 16mths ago.. here's some TV (via SH Hubstation) screen shots on a Grey screen.. 1/ Lights on above sofa, natural mode 2/ Lights on above sofa, Living Room mode 3/ Lights Off (curtain not drawn), Theatre 1 mode
hoon33 Posted October 29, 2007 Author Posted October 29, 2007 hello kzone, thank you very much for the photos. question, so do you think $1.3K of 2nd hand tw600 a good buy or not ? what is your opinion. thanks hoon33 :) :) :)
imbest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 OMG!!! kzone, how much did you pay for the grey screen? size?
kzone Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 question, so do you think $1.3K of 2nd hand tw600 a good buy or not ? cant help u on dat, for u to decide... also depends on the lamp hours clocked, condition etc.. am using 82" screen.. bought it used...
imbest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Actually why not combining the cost of projector and LCD and get a bigger size Plasma?
kzone Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 yes, it has a lamp clock like most if not all current PJs. But it can be reset & I'm not sure how accurate it is.. mine shows abt 700hrs but I dont think I've used it dat much... perhaps other bros can advise.. I'm quite a newbie in PJs...
imbest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 TS, just a wild proposal for you, in case you haven't bought any LCD TV yet. I saw a 34" Panasonic selling at best for $799 only. The PQ is damn solid! hehe....the rest dun laugh lah, that day got people asked me, "now still got people buy plasma?", now I'm going to tell them, "No, still got people buy CRT!!" hahaha...... TW600 seems solid, much power than my Z3. but it cannot do horizontal len shift right? so must place at the center?
koma Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 hehe... 1 step slower than u bro :P cant help u on dat, for u to decide... also depends on the lamp hours clocked, condition etc.. am using 82" screen.. bought it used...

imbest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i think you shld do more lit review on stuff before posting :p TW600 confirm can do lens shift horizontally and vertically. i asked that question coz this link only showed "vertical" lor.... http://www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-EMP-TW600.htm
zapp1624705742 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 then the info on PJ central not correct. TW600 can do 100% vertical and 50% horizontal lens shift
kzone Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 TW600 seems solid, much power than my Z3. TW600 shud perform abt the same as ur z3, ur wall is the main culprit.. unless u do plastering to flatten the wall & use paints designed for such use, its never gonna be as good as a proper screen for the room... There's a reason why its called the silverscreen & not silverwall...
imbest Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 yup, the uneven wall which can't be helped for HDB is causing the focus issue. It is very obvious in PC mode, but for movie, this is insignificant lah. i think Z3 can do 50% + - horizontal and 100% + - vertical, which is the same as TW600 right?
