Guest gorilla Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Hi I am trying to connect my htpc to TH-42PV70 using the DVI to HDMI cable. The only resolutions that are able to view properly are 1152 x 648 and 1280 x 720. For the 1152 x 648 resolution, it is showing a black border around the screen while the 1280 x 720 resolution overshoot the border ie some part of the screen is cut-off. For other resolution, it is either blank screen or not image is not very clear. How do I set the my plasma or the HTPC to display 1366x768 properly? I am using an old ATI FireGL card. Thanks
mcmaranello Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 try powerstrip... http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm
spidy Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 reply 124 http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=45611.120 I manage to do it leh.
Quest88 Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I managed to set something similar (maybe 1360x768) by default also. :) Does your gfx card support that resolution in the first place?
imbest Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 spidy, ur 1360x768 is not zhun zhun 16:9 right? is there any missing lines? or it still fill up the whole screen ? (that means with small margin of stretching) think the old FireGL driver dun have such option, try to download the latest ATi driver and see how.
Guest gorilla Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Hi all, Thanks for all the suggestion. I am using an ATI FireGL 3100 and I have upgraded to the latest drivers from ATI site. On top of this, I have also installed the modded drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/ which provides all the funny resolutions including the 1360x768. The original ATI driver does not provide this resolution. I have tried setting to 1360x768, the plasma gave me a blank screen using the DVI to HDMI connection. Hi Spidy, I have not tried the WXGA option yet. I will try tonight. Is there any differences between the HDMI and the VGA connection in term of picture quality when connect to HTPC?
Quest88 Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 OH DVI to HDMI. To my knowledge, most TVs are unable to accept 1360x768 by HDMI. Reason being this port is usually used for 1080 or 720 res, where the TV will by default try to do some scaling either way. Maybe you got to check if TV does allow 1:1 pixel input via HDMI. Otherwise just switch to VGA. I'm using VGA on my LCD TV without any issues. Happy with the sharpness.
HardCORE Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 If you use HDMI, you will not be able to achieve 1:1 pixel mapping. But you will still be able to use the 1360x768 resolution. Here's how you do it. 1. Install latest ATI drivers. 2. In the ATI Control Panel, under the monitor (it should say something like DTVx), there is a tab called "Overscan". Adjust the overscan slider until the desktop fits your screen nicely. In that same tab, there is a tick-box that says something like "use the overscan setting instead of custom resolution for non-native resolutions." Tick that box. 3. Use Windows Display properties or ATI CCC to set your desktop resolution to 1360x768 at 60Hz. (If you press the Reveal button your TV, it should show you that you are connected using 1080p).
spidy Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I plug in thru VGA. The screen is nice nice fit the whole plasma. But maybe coz the original resolution is 1024x768 so some of the words might be a little narrowed or so but those are the small words when i surf net lor. Place under reno. Maybe when is done, i can try take a photo or 2 and show you guys. Didn''t use DVI out got dunno how to set my video card..... I'm also using ATi Drivers. All i got was a blank screen.....
Guest gorilla Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I do not have the tab described by you when I connect the TV via HDMI connector. It is only available when I use the VGA connector but the overscan option is not available. May I know the video card you are using which is able to display the 1360x768 resolution clearly?

Previously I was using an ATI X1600, DVI to HDMI cable to a Panasonic 42PV500. Desktop running at 1360x768 (but ATI card scales it to 1080i before sending to TV). Videos running at 1080i. This was the best looking I could get the 42PV500 to look with my HTPC, and the interlaced mode didnt introduce any odd judder problems which was better than I expected. There was no 1:1 pixel mapping, but the detail was still very good. With the 42PV500, I also tried using a Nvidia card (7600 series), and it looked really terrible running at 1080i. For that reason I prefer ATI cards for HTPCs. Your PV70 will accept 1080P, unlike my PV500, so your video card will have the option of outputting to the TV at 1080P instead of 1080i. If you are wondering why I didnt use the VGA connection to try to achieve 1:1 pixel mapping? Well, I could achieve 1:1 pixel mapping if I set the HTPC's resolution to 1024x768. But then, the VGA port of the PV500 had a problem with V-sync. For some reason it doesnt keep the V-sync so I would get tearing sometimes, but it was not very noticeable. During the time I bought the PV500, I tested several TVs, and I also quite liked the Pioneer 435 but it had very noticeable tearing using the VGA input.

You have to adjust it in CCC. Don't think you can do it in control panel.

Guest gorilla Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Thanks Knight_Rider for your kind assistance but unfortunately it is not solved yet :'(. I do not have so many options in "DTV DTV" tab. I tried powerstrip but 1360 x 768 resolution is showing a blank screen. I suspect it may be my ATI card problem. Are you able to display 1360 x 768 on your PV70?
Knight_Rider Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Sorry I dun have a PV70 and I dun use 1360 x 768. Have you tried using 1080i from the control panel and adjust the overscan from the DTV tab? I long ago never use powerstrip liao. I think your PV70 accepts 1080p as well so there is no need for odd resolution.
Guest gorilla Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hi There isn't an overscan option for my ATI card. Guess that I have stayed with the VGA input instead. Hi all, Any recommendation for a good HDMI video card for HTPC? Budget less than 200 (if possible).
Knight_Rider Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Hmmm I guess DVI to HDMI dun have that option. HD FURY is another option then. For native HDMI Gigabyte 2600XT is a good choice at $195. Passive cooling and no need power adaptor.
