As long as it is an 80gb model, it doesn't have the emotion chip in it. If you're buying the local ps3, the emo chip is useless since most ps2 games gamers have and get are the us ntsc/uc ones, which cannot be played on the local ps3 anyway (region coding). If you're intending to get a US ps3 set, I'm not too sure whether current sets still have the emo chip in them though.

However, if you need to get one with the emo chip locally, it will be in the 60gb version, of which there are only a few sets found in shops here and there by now, since the 80gb is now the standard (usually comes with two controllers now too). I was told that besides the larger hdd, the newer sets are supposed to have better longer-lasting lens (previous models supposedly failed easily), but how true, I'm not too sure.

Hope the above helps!

Thanks, man. Yeah, not being able to play other region PS2 games is the main reason why I have not bought one yet....

I'm sure it's definitely possible to make it fully backward compatible - if folks could find a way to make it 'friendly', there's no reason why they couldn't do it...
