kemp98 Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 http://www.instructables.com/id/Give-your-HDTV-the-Philips-Ambilight-effect-on-the/ Saw this interesting article on a DIY bias lighting for HDTV. Tried it myself. Less strains on the eyes and looks great at night on my new Sharp LCD! For the adventurous and electronic-sauve, there is an article that teaches how to build an active programmable Ambilight that changes colour on the go. http://divxstation.com/article.asp?aId=151

kemp98 Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 Why having a bias lighting? http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lume.htm Bought my LED lights at IKEA Tampines (4 white LED strips @ $79). Below is the US IKEA link, can't find Singapore link. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20119418
Relax Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Hi kemp98 beautiful job! Do U mound the leds strip directly on to the tv display.. Mine is wall mount and I guess the only way I can mount it is directly on the back of the tv display. ( dont want to do anymore wall drilling!) Will that be too hot...for the tv display...
kemp98 Posted October 22, 2007 Author Posted October 22, 2007 The Ikea LED strips comes with pieces of doublesided tape, just stick the LED to the 4 centre edges on the back of your TV will do. Try not to stick onto any opening vents of your TV. The LED gives off very little heat so no problem to your TV.
Noodleman Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 This kit is better than the ikea kits because it gives you lots more control over the colour and brightness. Not a bad price either. Ive been using it a while. for the little bit extra cash (compared to the ikea kit) you get lots lots lots more. http://www.neon-lights.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=157
kemp98 Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 Actually Ikea does sell RGB LED (4x LEDs @ S$119) as well, these are able to switch to 6 different colours and modes. However, no remote control.
Relax Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Hi Noodleman, is the kit available locally and what is the px? Hi kemp98 are u able to pinpoint the section where the above part is located in ikea.?.. do not want to spend time walking around.
kemp98 Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 Under the Lighting section...., there are these LEDs are on demo displays can't miss it.
HomeMovie Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 it does look nice, but is it stand alone or same as Philips ambi which can follow the background color of tv programmes.
kemp98 Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 it does look nice, but is it stand alone or same as Philips ambi which can follow the background color of tv programmes. Both Ikea and Apollo LED recommended by Noodleman cannot follow the background color of tv programmes. You can only manual change colour through the switch or remote. You will need an adddition RGB LED controller with some nifty programming to do a real Philips ambilight, I had posted a link on how to do that. See my initial posting on top.
Noodleman Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 was gonna have a go at building my own filter system next year.. saved me a job :D \o/ nice work :)

What is the px and is this available locally?? Kemp98, Is there a different length of the LEDs ? am using a 50 inch display, will the LEDs cover the side completely??? Still trying to decide which to buy ?????
Noodleman Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Sorry Relax, completly missed your question. The Apollo kit is not in that many shops at the moment, but its being worked on! its a reasonably new kit so still finding its feet in the market place. It's currently only available via the web-site, amazon, ebay etc on mail order. Delivery is free tho within the UK, and not a huge amount more to go abroad. the trick with the kit is to use a combination of the various size light bars to best fit your screen. splitters are now available also, which means the kit can use up to 24 light bars. Im afraid i dont understand what you mean by "px" :)
kemp98 Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 Kemp98, Is there a different length of the LEDs ? am using a 50 inch display, will the LEDs cover the side completely??? Still trying to decide which to buy ????? Ikea LEDs strip comes as standard 11 inches lenght. Actually 4 at each side is enough as there are 9 LED bulbs in each strip. Alternatively, you can use rope light (Christmas / Hari Raya decorative light) instead or simply placing a Philips 6500K cool daylight lamp behind your display.
Relax Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Im afraid i dont understand what you mean by "px" :) px = price... anyway do not consider the appollo kit since it is not avaliable in Singapore. Had went to ikea and bought the multi color diode... chose this mainly for the reason the color is better looking at the single white color. Better in the sense that is less brighter. Luckily the multicolor can be selected to display only a single color with the button switch. Had not install it yet, cos undedcided where to use, in my room or the 50 inch display in my living room. ;D ;D ;D
kemp98 Posted October 27, 2007 Author Posted October 27, 2007 I decided not to choose the multi colour LED is because it would be too inconvenient to switch colour in my viewing position. Anyway, you can only use one colour at a time, so after a while tend to stick to a particular colour. Also white colour is the recommended colour for bias lighting purpose.
