This one is for the electrical expert..

I've recently introduced a balanced design power amp to my setup to drive my front speakers.

Before that I was using the rotel pwr amp.

Now each time I power up there will be a "thump" or "pop" sound - it is clearly audible, i.e. not those soft barely noticeable type. Of course the obvious thing thought was that it is due to current surge during power up.

I replace my Pioneer receiver with a new Marantz and now it gets worse... each time I change the surround mode the thump/pop sound is heard.

Help/ideas anyone?  ??? ??? ???

muting relay on which comp?

The amp or the receiver?

if its the amp,.. it does not explain the thump when switching surr mode on the receiver?

if its on the rec,... then it does not explain not having this with my older rec?

Hhmm.. you got the logic there.

But if you didn't have such problem with the Rotel then it must be the power amp. Then if the problem is only for the front, it also suggests that the problem is with the power amp. Try to use power amp to drive the rear and check if the problem moves to the rear.

Good luck troubleshooting.

Let me kaypo kaypo abit. Try turning on your Marantz 1st wait till the u hear the relay click then proceed to turn-on your power amp. See if tis helps.

Nope,... does not help.

Come to think of it, I had the same issue when I was using Krell power amp... but when brought to the distributor shop in Adelphi, does not have this behaviour.

Very strange indeed. Tot something wrong with the power source, but to date have tried almost every power point in my apt all same result.  >:(

So for now, just live with it.  :-[

Maybe have to save a bit and get a proper pre-amp with HT bypass,... my hunch is the balance vs unbalance thingy.

Yup could be. Are u using the RCA to Balance converter? Sometimes high-end amps like krell does not comes with DC protection circuit which will amplify DC voltage being received from the source and causes "Thud or Pop" sound. Don't mean to scare u  but this can be very dangerous as it might kill your amp and/or speakers(experienced with my previous av receiver which eventually kill one channel of my previous highend amp due to leakage - lucky coz sometimes whole amp could go kaput).  :P

Have to be sure that the new HT preamp comes with DC protect else this may not solve the problem. Some insight: There are alot of highend amp designers out there who tends to omit the DC protection circuit as it sits between the input and output stage of the signal path of the amp therefore reducing sound quality and they leave the preamps to do the DC protect but not all preamps are made with DC protect as well. What can I say, it's a high-end jungle out there! ;D ;D
