Guest guru Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I always sound good in the bathroom! You may have a problem there logic ,that's where they plan putting the beds from the rooms.
rantan Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 You are very wrong there rantan, you are hyper judged at shows, I was looking at another forum tonight and came across threads in the uk about the sound of the speakers we had in Melbourne. The OP was trolling and was eventually banned but the thread went for 7 pages of crap before they pulled the plug and this was from comments made on here. Maybe, but trolls are just that and people aren't always stupid. However when you have been to as many shows as I have[as both exhibitor and looker] it's better not to go ape schitt about the sound and just talk to as many people as is possible. Just enjoy the experience and catch up with friends you haven't seen before or for a long time. Just my experience YMMV 1
Guest Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I wouldn't expect the show to attract loads of repeat business from those that displayed at Melbourne. In my travels, I heard plenty of bad feedback from the exhibitors from high cost, disorganisation, to lack of space, but above all else that it's difficult to allow the products to be seen and heard they way they need to be - particularly for our larger format floor stander manufacturers and distributors. Some horrible stories I have also heard of commonly known material being recorded really badly in a deliberate attempt by individuals to make certain brands look bad - would certainly stop me from showcasing any products myself too in what can only be considered a semi-controlled environment. We would have had some sort of presence at Melbourne as StereoNET but were unable to due to the show "already having another media partner being involved" .... apparently. I assume the same applies to Sydney which is why you don't see SNA involved, covering or even promoting the event.

Marc, I would have thought that having SNA involved would be the kind of 'promotion', free advertising by the SNA community board talk, and target market that the promoters should dream about it. In my view the industry is not helping itself in this way. Surely the SNA traffic versus the circulation of a print media partner would make for a set of interesting statistics.
Guest Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I couldn't agree more. The show organisers in UK were very interested in working with us originally. Oh well, a few of us SNA'ers are working on an alternative for the long term. I'm personally glad to see shows happening in Australia, but sadly it seems we cannot officially be involved.
Willco Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Hmmm--I've heard there is already a glitch in the ticketing procedure W
Guest JohnA Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 i have been thinking about this one, and to be honest, as nice as it is to have all this equipment under one roof, i think i may pass. I went to the Melbourne show and it was good, but allot of the times the rooms were full, and it was hard to get in and have a good look at the equipment. I dont attend the motor show for the same reason these days, would prefer to go to the dealer and look at the cars i am interested in. Same with hifi, will just go to the dealers of the equipment i am interested in to view and listen in a hopefully well setup room. Not a 4 x 4 room that is thrown together a day before with a hope that it all may sound good. You simply cannot judge equipment in such an environment, simply view, and if you like what you see, make an appointment to listen There is also way too much bitchiness amongst manufacturers, and then you have the supporters and haters of certain products who just love to get on forums and bag out other products and tell us all how brilliant their favourite ones are

Young Skywalker Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 the room are a lot smaller than in melbourne, the $6000 rooms are 4.3 x 4.3 in useable area with furniture that is non removable. the bathrooms in the rooms are bloody enormous, great if you're a guest but useless for demoing gear. very poorly thought out by the organisers. Those impressions correlate with mine after inspecting the rooms allocated for the purposes of the Sydney Show. For the asking price should we not expect Vegas-sized rooms and Vegas-sized promotion?
RockandorRoll Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Motor Show is on in Sydney that same week yeah? should probably organise some accommodation

rantan Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Y No SGR? In a 4 x 4 room? Fairly easy one to explain.
Saxon Hall Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 In a 4 x 4 room? Fairly easy one to explain. Last year they were in a very large space downstairs which was obviously not a suite. Does the Sheraton on the Park not have similar rooms?
Luc Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Is Redgum there or VAF or Adelaide speakers or...a host of other small manufacturers? Is it a cost thing then? (no Bill McLean and his Maggies and Quads etc )
rantan Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 It's sad that VAF isn't there, but once again, maybe space constraints are a factor. The large and wonderful signature series wouldn't be optimal in a very small room I guess.
Krispy Audio Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I'm a little disappointed that I've invested big $ to exhibit and they haven't included me on the list as yet! Rest assured I'm there and am looking forward to meeting a lot of you in person for the first time. 2

Krispy Audio Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Yep Guru I am, but am still paying a share and still exhibiting my own cables on top of the brands of theirs I retail.
Guest guru Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Yep Guru I am, but am still paying a share and still exhibiting my own cables on top of the brands of theirs I retail. they will only have one name on the door [ie. r a v] and the hotel won't let you stick a second one up so you better sought it out with the boys quick smart otherwise you're there just to take the sting out.
atavid Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I enjoyed travelling down to the Melb Hi Fi show and im going to the Syd show too,but one thing i wished there had been more of and that was rooms with stock of small items/accessories for sale there and then on the spot. I remember some places had some stuff, but most was a little too esoteric (and pricey for me).I would have bought some basic Atlas or Chord interconnect cables,an anti static gun, vinyl cleaning accessories, cartridge mounting kit,TT weight and outer ring weight.I was also in the market for another tonearm(which i bought some weeks after the show from overseas)I'm not sure what all that would have come to but im sure it would be better than beer money. Dont get to see much stuff in the flesh up here in Qld these days with the demise of a lot of Hi Fi shops here, so it was a good chance to pick up small items(or so i thought).I cant remember the company selling the s/h gear near the entrance but when i saw it i thought it looked promising for more rooms to be selling bits and bobs too.Its all well and good taking orders, but i think a lot of us will buy there and then on impulse if a reasonably priced item takes our fancy(good for the retailer, not so good if youre trying to watch spending though i suppose) Those rooms that did have some small stuff didnt have prices on them and trying to get to ask was just all too hard so i passed on a lot of things i was interested in.I remember one room though,i think it was the room selling the Icon Audio and Graham Slee gear actually had prices on every thing in the room. How bloody sensible. For a lot of the others though i fear the old HiFi snobbery might still exist and the "if you have to ask" attitude still bubbles just below the surface.OR they were just too lazy to bother price signing the gear. How hard would it be to hang a price tag off the cables they were connecting up with or a sign on top of the speakers with system prices (saw some of those i must admit) Anyway i just think its a great opportunity to flog small gear off (even if its not discounted)to a passing parade of potential customers.I also realise trying to handle transactions is a hassle in those circumstances, but surely it might just be worth it.
proftournesol Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 It also seemed that some rooms could have sold a lot of LPs or CDs, as many people kept saying 'what's that (playing)?'
atavid Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Oh yes, that was the other thing.Glad you reminded me,why wernt there any places selling music.I too heard some great tracks and often wanted to ask what it was,but again too hard.If I were a specialist music retailer I would try and acquire a stand at the show. I might offer all the rooms a selection of audiophile vinyl or cd's and ask them to indicate to their audiences what they were playing.Would it not then bring new and potentially long term customers to the music retailer?especially if he had a nice little stand in the foyer stocked with a selection of the same cd's and vinyl. .Again,I would have liked to been able to go out the foyer at the end of the day with a little list of albums I had heard and picked up a few on the spot.Don't get me wrong,I was extremely grateful the show had been organized, but now they have the opportunity to make it a much more comprehensive and well rounded event. Finally, I kind of wish hi fi shows could break out of the hotel hosting model.I'm not sure what other location would be suitable given the requirement each manufacturer/importer/retailer has for a fairly discrete listening area, but I find those hotel rooms cramped, claustraphobic and generally not conducive to spending much time in.Surely in the 20 odd years since I attended my last hifi show we've moved on to a better model than what the poms have been doing over and over again since the 60's.
Guest JohnA Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 quality records was there at the Melbourne show and was my first stop before looking at the hifi porn
NellyJamba Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Ah the shop at Malvern. Miss it a lot. Drove as far as Bristol today to look for a 2nd hand record shop but Quality Records still one of the very best for me. 1
