stan79 Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Hi guys I saw ntuc is selling this plasma for $1,799 with wall mount n installation and 3 yrs warranty without free gift. Is this a good buy? how abt the PQ of this plasma? Worth buying? Seems like panasonic n pioneer is more of a popular brand for plasma?
imbest Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 PQ confirm better than both Panasonic and Pioneer due to its processor, didn't know they finally react to Panasonic's aggressive price. But Q91 will be a better option. Nevertheless, it's more prone to burnt mark.....

imbest Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Q91 higher specs, got more options to enhance the pictures lah, if i'm not wrong the numbers of HDMI and other input are diff also. Not sure if the production is at different place. U know like Panasonic, the cheapest one are MIC, wheares OK one are from SG factory and the top of the lines are from japan direct. Only the latest Pioneer and Panasonic comes with burnt mark protection. Samsung hasn't put in yet if i'm not wrong. I saw it myself in HongLiang, 2 months only, burnt mark damn jialat, but I dunno if it can be prevented by doing some magic for the first 200hr critical period, perhaps some brothers here could advice. I am now thinking if I shall go for Q91 42" first, then upgrade to 50" 2-3 years down the road. The price for those 50" full HD is just not justifiable yet. Since I'll mostly on SD, may not be a wise choice to go for Full 1080p HD panel.
stan79 Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 same here too. mostly SD viewing now. why is it that e 1st 200 hrs is critical? if most of the time only watch ch8 w/o much swithing of channel for example, the ch8 logo at right top hand corner will have a burnt mark? how to prevent burnt mark for the 1st 200 hrs?

stan79 Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 i have to on my plasma to display this for 200 hrs b4 i can really use it???
Knight_Rider Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 i have to on my plasma to display this for 200 hrs b4 i can really use it??? Of course not silly. Before the 200 hrs run this for a couple of minutes on alternate days or when you have logos on for quite some time. Heard it from someone not sure if it helps. Some screensaver/plasma wipes uses this technic as well.

Nah it's okay nowadays technology keeps getting better so no need to worry. Just some maintanence and it will go a long way. Abuse it and got an excuse to buy new one. ;D Plasma nowadays has screen saver, alt pixel and wadever you call it so cool. PQ is better then LCD so I will still go for it. As for warrenty I dun think you can claim burn marks. It's not spoil or anything. Some things just need more TLC while some can take more abuse. But after spending so much I am sure you'll appreciate it then whack it.

Could you provide more info on comparing the PQ to the Panasonic PV70 and PV700 please, apart from a simple statment that it is "due to its processor". I'd like to know more. Thanks.

I'd like to know more. Thanks. ya i will like to know too. right now i was comparing PV70 and PV700 from panny website. seems like there is no difference in term of the specs. I juz know that PV700 is made is sg while PV70 is from china n these made PV700 much more ex by almost 1k after the free ntuc vouchers.
imbest Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 sorry guys, I do not have those technical info, I saw it with my bare eyes.......in various places. even until today, Pioneer is yet to convince me that its PQ is better than Samsung, except the darker black part. But this kind of thing, u know lah, very subjective one lor......
eyke Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Aunty Lucy now selling ~$1,600. Quick question, would this plasma get better PQ watching free-to-air channels than LCDs of the same price?
imbest Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 should be, but you need to find the best settings for it :D if 1080p input is not important to you, this is a better option than other brands if color and sharpness is important to you :D
eyke Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 should be, but you need to find the best settings for it :D thanks. btw, is it the higher contrast ratio of plasma vs LCDs that gives better PQ with FTA channels? if so, does that mean those Full HD LCDs with higher contrast ratio then the plasma would give better FTA channel PQ?
imbest Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 again, it's a very subjective thing. In general, LCD requires 1:1 mapping input to produce the best PQ, even with that, it's only comparable to Plasma, not better than Plasma. Plasma is not a pixel game toy, and yes, the higher contrast ratio does contribute a lot to the PQ. Nevertheless, individual manufacturer's processor is the key thing in terms of color reproduction, etc etc etc. So far, my eyes feel that Samsung P9/Q9/C9 has the most natural color, LG PC5R is slightly over saturated, Pionner is blur (not having sharp image) and Panasonic's color is dull. whatever it is, remember, all these can be adjusted no matter what.....most shops are using the out-of-box default settings. it's just my view, you shall go down and see it yourself.
eyke Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 it's just my view, you shall go down and see it yourself. problem is, most of the big boys don't show FTA channels...
imbest Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 who told you so? if they have a mioTV box, just need to switch to 576p, but that's not 100% accurate still, you need 576i signal. I would suggest you record down through a DVD DVR and bring the DVD down to see it yourself, provided your recorded one is true 576i.

I would suggest you record down through a DVD DVR and bring the DVD down to see it yourself, provided your recorded one is true 576i. thanks, i didn't think to ask the sales people. anyway, went down to BD and HN at Parkway and managed to see what SD tv looks like on LCD & plasma. to my CRT-trained eyes, the LCDs were quite terrible, and plasma only slightly better. hopefully, it'll look better through SCV. there was a side-by-side: Panny PV7 vs Sammy C91: the PV7 looks better. so even though i could get the 42" C91 at ~$1.3K, i'll probably pay ~$500 more to get another 37" PV70 or a 42" PV70. this is bad, i originally wanted to spend less than $1K for a bedroom TV... :P
imbest Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 suggest you go a few more places to view the diff. Sometimes, the settings could be messed up, or wire connection got problem. I encountered many times and I have to end up asking them to check everything.

eyke Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 where is C91 selling for $1.3k? Don't know, but NTUC AMK Hub selling $1.6K (i have $300 vouchers, so $1.3K for me only)...
